THE LoGo
Clear space zoneThe clear space zone surrounding the logo is determined by the height of the capital G of the word Games in the logo.
Monotone logoThe logo may be reversed white out of a solid colour background. It may also be reproduced in black.
SizeWhere the logo is used for A4 formats, stationery and literature, i.e. newsletters and leaflets the logo should be a minimum of 30mm wide. The absolute minimum size for print is 25mm wide to maintain legibility.
Don’t; – add any wording (including school names) to the
logo or within the clear space zone – manipulate or distort the logo – use a different typeface for the wordmark – change the way our colours are used – reproduce the logo in different colours – add other graphic elements to the logo – place text or graphics too close to the logo – place the full-colour logo on a coloured background – place the full-coloured logo on an image.
Our logo represents the School Games.
It is our most important visual asset
and should be used prominently and
consistently to help build familiarity with
the brand.
We want the Sainsbury’s School Games
to be seen and recognised wherever the
brand appears, so the following rules
have been developed to promote clear
and consistent use across different
applications.
The Sainsbury’s School Games logo can
be reproduced in full colour or in mono
(black or white). Where possible it should
be reproduced in full colour. When using
the white version of the Sainsbury’s
School Games logo it can appear on
black or one of the primary Sainsbury’s
School Games brand colours shown here.

expression. Distinctive use of key
colours will help build and reinforce
brand recognition.

TYPOGRapHYFOR PROFESSIONALLY DESIGNED ARTWORK
Our typographic style helps build
brand recognition and make our
written communications attractive
and easy to read.
Our headline typeface has been chosen
for it’s youthful and fun character, which
gives our collateral a fresh and energetic
look and feel. It should be used solely for
headlines and never for body copy.
Malgecito is free for non-profit use and
can be downloaded from the link below
www.dafont.com/malgecito.font
Our body copy typeface is Helvetica Neue
LT Std. This family offers us great flexibility
as we can incorporate different weights to
provide contrast, emphasis and interest
across our communications, it is also a
compliment to our headline font. Helvetica
Neue LT Std should only be used in the
weights 45 Light, 55 Roman, 75 Bold
and 85 Heavy, which can be mixed and
matched to provide consitency and
variety throughout all collateral.
As well as being used for body copy the
four weights can also be used effectively
for subheadings, introductions, call-outs,
highlighted text, captions and quotes.
FOR ALL OTHER USES – Including Microsoft Office applications and online Where documents will be created using
Microsoft Office applications (Outlook,
Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc) and
where documents will be shared with
others via email we use Arial as it allows
for greater compatibility due to it being
installed as standard on all Windows and
Mac OS X computer systems.

handball - wall ball
Getting started ■ This game is quick and easy to play with just a wall and a ball.
■ A group of players form a line facing a wall, (ideally a sports hall, gym or school hall with clear wall space), between 5m and 10m away.
■ The first player begins by throwing the ball at the wall, before joining the back of the queue.
■ Player two can allow the ball to bounce once before they catch it. They must then throw the ball at the wall before joining the back of the queue.
■ Player three repeats, and so on.
■ A player is eliminated from the game when the ball bounces more than once.
■ The player remaining at the end of the game wins.
Quick introductionWall ball is a team game played by throwing a ball against a wall. The aim of the game is for the next player to catch it after it has bounced only once, and throw it back against the wall. Wall ball is a game of strategy where players compete against each other to catch their peers out.
Equipment required ■ A suitable wall ideally inside but the game can be played outside.
■ One handball per team (or any other ball which can be comfortably gripped in one hand).
■ Floor lines or safe marker cones.
Health and safety points ■ Use a soft ball that can be gripped easily by all the participants.
■ Ensure the wall is clear of all windows and signs.
■ Ensure the surface of the sports hall is free of any spillages or objects.
■ Ensure all the participants in line facing the wall are stood behind a designated distance maker; this can be a pre-existing line in the sports hall.
Primary intra-school/Level 1 Resource - Challenge Card
Physical me ■ Ensure participants are using the ‘elbow over shoulder’ technique to throw the ball.
■ Discourage chest passes or underarm throws.
■ Ensure speed of play and quick decision making.
■ Encourage participants to outwit opponents.
Social meLeading and volunteering
■ Officials and leaders can be used to ensure the smooth running of the competition.
■ Officials can check that no players in the line step over the designated distance marker between the wall and the teams.
■ Other volunteers can count the bounces and decide when participants are eliminated from the competition.
Think inclusively (STEP)Space
■ Position the targets closer together to make it easier to hit them.
■ Use a larger area to accommodate participants in wheelchairs.
■ Add zones to the area; each zone for use by participants with differing disabilities.
Task ■ Allow players with upper body impairments to use a ramp to send the ball.
■ Allow SEN/disabled players to throw underarm or roll the ball.
Equipment ■ Use larger objects as targets in the middle third to make the game easier.
People ■ Encourage team-mates to give SEN/disabled players a ball if they are unable to pick them up from the floor.
■ Support those able to move less freely by using a volunteer to work with them to retrieve balls for them.
handball - wall ball
Sporting meSpirit of the Games
I will always give my best, every time I play.
Tactical meI always try to read my opponent’s throw, so I can be best placed to get to the ball before it bounces more than once.
Thinking me ■ How can I make sure the ball doesn’t bounce more than once before I receive it?
■ How can I outwit the opponent behind me by ensuring the ball bounces away from them?
■ How hard should I throw the ball?
www.youRschoolgames.com
www.youRschoolgames.com
www.youRschoolgames.com
Equipment required ■ One size 0 handball (or similar).
■ Two goals of adequate size. These may be 5-a-side football, hockey or goals taped on a wall.
■ Two sets of coloured bibs.
■ Netball court markings can be used.
Health and safety ■ Players of the same team should all wear the same colour tops or bibs to avoid clashes among players.
■ Players on court should not wear anything that might cause danger to opponents; this includes caps, jewellery and other sharp objects.
■ Use a softer ball to avoid any players sustaining head injuries or hand injuries when playing the game.
■ Ensure appropriate run-off exists around the court; this avoids players’ momentum causing them to run into walls or doors.
■ Ensure the court is dry at all times, mopping up any liquids as soon as they are identified.
Quick rules ■ If an attacking player enters the opposition ‘D’, the goalkeeper wins possession of the ball.
■ If a defender enters his/her own area, the team in attack win a penalty.
■ No body contact is allowed; any contact results in a free throw against the offending player.
■ Players can only stand stationary with the ball for three seconds.
■ Players can only move while carrying the ball for three steps.
■ If a player knocks the ball out of play at the side of the court, the opposition begin play again with a free throw.
■ If the ball goes behind the goal, off either team, the goalkeeper gains possession of the ball.
Spirit of the Games: Excellence through Competition
I will involve myself fully in the game and give 100%. I will play with enthusiasm and passion and try not to let my team down.

Think tactics ■ Players should look to move the ball as quickly and accurately as possible up the court, utilising all of their team-mates.
■ Handball is about finding the balance between accuracy, speed and power.
For young people
boxing - tag box
Getting started ■ Tag box played in a 12x12’ square. Mark the area using cones, existing lines, or throw-down markers.
■ The game is about boxing specific movement not punching.
■ Boxers wear different coloured bibs.
■ The game is officiated by a referee who keeps the time and adds up the scores.
■ The referee must stand outside the playing area.
■ The game is played over three one-minute rounds.
■ The winner is the person who scores the most ‘tags’ in the time allowed.
Quick introductionTag box is a pairs game of agility and skillful movement. Boxers must tag their opponent’s back shoulder or lead knee with their lead hand or back hand to score a point (gloves should be worn if the school has them).
Think tactics ■ Boxers must use their footwork to push in and out of range.
■ When tagging to the knee, boxers must bend their knee so their shoulder is in line with the target.
■ Try counter tagging after using a foot or trunk defence.
Safety ■ Boxers are tagging not punching.
■ Aim for the shoulder and knees not the head.
■ No jewellery to be worn.
Secondary intra-school/Level 1 Resource
boxing - tag box
Organising the game ■ Encourage boxers that defence is as important as attack.
■ Encourage boxing-specific movement and not a ‘tag off’.
■ Look for clean tags to the back shoulder or lead knee with an open hand.
■ Add the scores up accordingly.
■ If in doubt or the game gets ‘scrappy’, call a break.
Officiating ■ Young people officiate by:
■ timing the contest
■ counting the scores (tags) for each boxer
■ calling break when needed.
Keep it enjoyable ■ Make sure boxers are evenly matched in height, weight and ability.
Make it easier ■ Change the target area from the back shoulder and lead knee to just the back shoulder.
Think inclusively ■ If appropriate, reduce the size of the boxing area for SEN/disabled athletes.
■ The tag box should be clearly marked with coloured cones.
■ If appropriate, allow SEN/disabled athletes to score points by touching their opponent’s wrist, elbow or front of the shoulder.
■ If beneficial, allow SEN/disabled players to play sitting down on a chair.
■ Wheelchair users can play against seated opponents.
■ For visually impaired players with enough vision to see their opponent, make sure players wear colour contrasting bibs and stay within sight of each other.
Spirit of the Games: Excellence through Competition
Respect your opponent at all times; be gracious in victory and defeat.

created using the following principles.
The width (X) of the ‘Part of the

A vertical line should be used to provide
balance and separation, this should
have a minimum thickness of 0.5pt at it’s

LoGo - co-BRanDingThe Sainsbury’s School Games has five
official partner organisations, where
space on the material(s) produced
allows (for example, a poster, leaflet or
banner) the partner lock-up logo (Y)
should appear immediately
below the event.
Alternatively the partner logo lock-up
can appear at the bottom of any item
of collateral such as on A4-sized
materials or banners.
See co-branding examples of use (P18).

LoGo - co-BRanDingYour event may be sponsored by a wide
range of organisations, each of which will
require its brand identity to appear.
If this is the case an area should be
allocated for partner co-branding
immediately below the ‘Part of the
Sainsbury’s School Games’ official
partner lock-up. This should be divided
into a grid of equally spaced areas
according to the number of brands that
need to appear.
The horizontal grid should be set where
Z = height of the British Paralympic
Association logo and A = clearspace
set by the official partner organisations
lock-up.
Depending on the number of partners
involved this could become extensive and
may not be practical in all situations, if this
is the case the partner logo grid can be
placed at the bottom of the collateral or on
the back page of leaflets/booklets – where
spae allows).
See co-branding examples of use (P18).

BRandIng and SocIal medIaSocial media channels such as Twitter,
Facebook and YouTube are excellent
platforms to publicise the Sainsbury’s
School Games in your local areas as
well as nationally.
Official accounts for the Sainsbury’s
School Games are already in existence
and the Sainsbury’s School Games
logo is a powerful visual representation
of the Sainsbury’s School Games
brand online which is managed and
maintained by the Sainsbury’s School
Games team as the official voice of the
Sainsbury’s School Games.
Whilst the Sainsbury’s School
Games team support and encourage
conversations about the Sainsbury’s
School Games, to avoid confusion and
to protect the brand online we would
ask that the Sainsbury’s School Games
logo is not uploaded to social media
accounts as the visual representation
of the account. This will help to avoid
confusion with the official voice of the
Sainsbury’s School Games.
If you have any questions over appropriate
use of the logo on social media or need advice on
setting up your channel please email

The Sainsbury’s 2013 School
Games is a national multi-
sport for the most talented
young people in the UK
WRitten commUnicationWhen talking about “the Games” or
“School Games” it should always be
referred to in full as the “Sainsbury’s
School Games.”
PLEASE NOTE
• If referring to the Sainsbury’s School
Games repeatedly it should be
named in full in the first instance
and subsequently referred to as the
School Games.
• It should only be in very rare
circumstances (where space is
constrained) that the full title is not used.
At Level 4, the event should be referred
to as the Sainsbury’s 2013 School
Games (or the Sainsbury’s 2012 School
Games, historically).
Sainsbury’s must only appear in
the Sainsbury’s logo/font in areas
of designed text, such as the full
Sainsbury’s School Games logo – it
must never be written in the School
Games headline font (Malgecito). It is
fine to use the title Sainsbury’s School
Games in normal headline or body text,
using either Helvetica Neue LT Std or
Arial fonts where applicable.
SAINSBURY’S SCHOOL GAMES LEVELS 1–3 — Branding rules for schools, SGOs, LOCs and NGBs 21
Avoid using Sainsbury’s School Games as prefix to everything, for example:
Sainsbury’s School Games Young Volunteers – should read Young Volunteers at the Sainsbury’s School Games.
Sainsbury’s School Games Athletes’ Village – should read the Athletes’ Village at the Sainsbury’s School Games.
Greater Manchester School Games – should read Sainsbury’s School Games in Greater Manchester.
Kent Games – should read Sainsbury’s School Games in Kent
Sainsbury’s School Games Organiser – this is a job title and does not need ‘Sainsbury’s’ adding in front of it.
