The present volume contains seventeen essays onthe Mamluk Sultanate, an Islamic Empire of slaveswhose capital was in Cairo between the 13th and the16th centuries, written by leading historians of thisperiod. It discusses topics as varied as social andcultural issues, women in Mamluk society, literaryand poetical genres, the politics of material culture,and regional and local politics. The volume presentsstate of the art scholarship in the field of Mamlukstudies as well as an in-depth review of recentdevelopments. Mamluk studies have expanded considerably in recent years and today interestshundreds of active researchers worldwide who write in numerous languages and constitute a vividand strong community of researchers, some ofwhose best research is presented in this volume.
