Brothers are your family, your people. In one sense or another,

we want this new, free magazine to be just that. A close, intimate,

trustworthy documentation of visual culture influenced by today’s

trends. No more should exclusivity and intimidation surround the

vast spectrum of visual design, rather a brotherly curated selection

of culture now should prevail.

In our world of revolutions and evolutions, we want to contribute

by delivering to you a new multi-dimensional evolution of the blog,

born to establish a new approach towards visual inspiration.

Together with presenting to you a spectrum of our finds, each

quarterly issue also curates a powerful pairings of artists to

produce creations that would otherwise go unfound. We aim

to instigatea collaborative dialogue among uncommonly paired

creative industries. We present to you one pair of creative

pioneers in every magazine and hope that each brotherly union

will be the beginning of its own creative thread in the vast

community of artists that might otherwise never meet.

We embarked on an exciting mission to survey the wide spectrum

of visual culture, to distill from it an exclusive selection of artists,

their products and the places that inspire them. As your curatorial

team, we hope that our diverse backgrounds bring together a

unique glance into a selection of art, inspiration, and relationships

within visual culture that we hope you enjoy.

Hey Thierry, what’s up?

I decided to star t our collaborative ar twork

without you, what do you think of my

installation?

Thierry

Yesterday I was in the Ardennes and I saw a

belted kingf isher from New Zealand and its

call sounds like the cruel laugh of a witch...

after having done some

research and taken a step back

(from my own work), i decided to

search for more information about

the bird in question...

simple acts have become a rare

occurrence these days.

My phone is ringing:

Thierry

My installation will be in the gray tones...

followed by that witch’s cruel laugh, my instal-

lation will be in the gray tones... followed by

that witch’s cruel laugh that I discovered

on the lands of Ardennes.

Marcin

Ok, come to my place, I ’ll wait for you at

9PM, when all cats are grey (in the dark)...

MArCin SoBolev

biography

Marcin Sobolev, a young artist from Belgium,

part migratory bird and part kingfisher, has embarked upon

a journey into the collective family memory. Hovering and

swooping, his work is as poetic as it is faux-naif. Is this

utopia or the butterfly effect? The great thing about Marcin

(born in Brussels in 1981) is his capacity to love birds and

cats alike (and above all to love when “all cats are grey”),

to fuse tenderness with a clutch of familiar objects on

which he superimposes shrewd metaphors, to cultivate his

outsized, fairytale fruit and pull out the worm - all without

advertising the fact, effortlessly, like a child who just decides

to grow up.

If you want to unravel Marcin’s creative thread, you must

be aware of his inner journey, the need that has gripped

him over the last 10 years (amply attested to in his first

exhibition at Dominique Lang’s in Dudelange last January).

You’ll need to understand his origins, his Polish and Russian

roots, which Marcin uses and abuses (even going as far as

spelling his name in Cyrillic script) and which are given

fresh impetus by stories and confidences shared by his

grandmother and followed up on pilgrimages - journeys

across the frontiers of the imagination. Marcin is not one

for wild flights of fancy or digital experimentation. He is a

cabinetmaker by training and he uses his saw and paintbrush

to reclaim the landscapes he has inherited from memory.

His use of line – the birch tree, emblematic of poor and

often sandy soils – but also his use of stitching – wood and

wool, endemic and humble materials, combined with more

folkloric elements (colours and pompons) – are a constant

thread leading back to traditional know-how, in tandem

with a style of writing which is first and foremost visual.

On top of this personal perspective, the artist persists

in overlaying “an extra dose of soul”, a fun outer layer, a

freshness which is as spontaneous as it is carefully applied

(something conspicuous by its absence on the artistic scene

at the moment), as if innocence were a muscle that had to

be kept in trim.

Thierry BouTeMy

biography

Thierry Boutemy, a florist from Brussels,

is a sensitive guy. And his bouquets resemble just that.

Grasses, wildflowers, armfuls of tulips, slender stems and

slender leaves: so ephemeral and poetic that they have in-

spired filmmaker Sofia Coppola, fashion designer Dries Van

Noten, and all the lovers wanting to “say it all” with flowers.

Thierry is French but loves people in Brussels. For him,

Brussels is the perfect compromise between a city and a

provincial town, which appeals to his countryside origins.

Working on a set of Marie Antoinette, he indulged into all

possible artistic details. He collected flowers and herbs

from the local fields from his region and went “all natural”

on Sofia Coppola.

He is simply in love with fairy tales, with stories stemming

from a childhood dream. And he is a man of simplicity.

That is why his bouquets of poppies, wheat stalks, buttons

and other wild flowers and herbs always appear so simple.

Not perfect. Not tidy. Rather messy really and full of life.

He feels that this is the only way not to betray his flowers.

The transience and fragility of flowers’ cycle of life is trou-

bling yet inspiring to him. He is unable to force them into

artificial arrangements and rather gives them the space

to live, wither, die and simply be beautiful at every stage

of their life.

He shoots out a clear answer when asked for his favorites.

Peonies, of course! But then he goes on - poppy, butter-

cups, chamomile, blueberries, herbs from the countryside,

garden roses, hyacinths, tulips and tubers. You will not

see him work with lilies tho. Too smelly. You also will not

be able to buy a red rose in his shop on Valentine’s Day.

Overpriced and opposite to his preferences and ideas. But

for the beautiful anemones, there is certainly always space!
