“Shaping the Future: Inflation or deflation: which is the greater threat?”

David ‘Danny’ Blanchflower is aleading labour economist andcurrently a Professor of Economicsat Dartmouth College in the US.

Between 2006 and 2009 he wasone of the Bank of England’s seniorpolicy makers. As a member of theBank of England’s Monetary PolicyCommittee (MPC) for three years,he was one of the few economiststo correctly call the depths of therecession gripping the economyand has spoken out about thecaution of his fellow MPCmembers. Professor Blanchflowerhas held several research positionsin economics for universities inMunich and Bonn and sinceJanuary 2009 he is the ProgrammeDirector of the “Future of Labour”research programme at theInstitute for the Study of Labor inBonn. He was awarded an honorary

DSc from the University of Londonand an honorary D.Litt from theUniversity of Leicester. In 2008 the Daily Telegraph named himtheir ‘Business Person of the Year’.

His research findings on a variety of topics including economics,finance, entrepreneurship,happiness and unemploymenthave been widely published and for his book ‘The Wage Curve’ hewas awarded the PrincetonUniversity’s Richard A. Lester Prizefor ‘the most outstanding book in Industrial Relations and LabourEconomics’. He is a Bloomberg TVcontributing editor and economicseditor at the New Statesman.Professor Blanchflower wasappointed Commander of theOrder of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 Queen’s BirthdayHonours.
