About This Document
Purpose
After BTS system deployment, commercial operations are started on site. To ensure smooth
operation, you need to perform routine maintenance on the BTS.
This document describes the routine hardware maintenance items of the BTS3900. The itemsare equipment room environment maintenance, power and grounding system maintenance, and
cabinet maintenance. This document also describes the procedures for replacing parts, modules,
and boards.

This describes the routine maintenance for the hardware items in the BTS3900. The hardware
items that are routinely maintained refer to the equipment room environment of the base station,
power supply and grounding system of the base station, and main components in the BTS3900.
4 Powering On and Powering Off a BTS3900 Cabinet
This describes how to power on and power off a BTS3900 cabinet. The procedures for powering
off the BTS3900 cabinet in normal and emergency cases are different.
5 Replacing the BTS3900 Components
Replacing the BTS3900 components involves replacing the BBU components, DCDU-01, FAN
unit, PMU, PSU, GATM, RFU, and power supply subrack.

2 Preparations for Base Station SiteMaintenance
This describes the preparations for base station site maintenance. The preparations for site
maintenance involve obtaining site information, selecting maintenance items, and arranging
maintenance tools and spare parts.
Obtaining Site Information
Before you maintain the base station site, obtain the following information:
l Unsolved faults and alarms
l Hardware configurations
l Local environment
l Spare parts
Selecting Maintenance Items
Select suitable maintenance items based on actual requirements of the base station. The
maintenance items are as follows:
l Maintaining the equipment room environment of the base station
l Maintaining power supply and grounding system of the base station
l Maintaining the main components in the base station
l Maintaining the antenna system of the base station
Arranging Tools and Spare Parts
Arrange the related maintenance tools and spare parts based on the site information and
maintenance items of the base station.
The most commonly used tools for site maintenance are as follows:
l Frequency test devices comprise of spectrum analyzer, and various connectors and cables.
l
Power test devices are used to test and analyze the output power of the base station. Powermeter is a commonly used power test device.

l The antenna and feeder test devices are used to test the standing wave ratio, return loss,
and cable insertion loss, and to locate faults. The commonly used antenna and feeder test
device is the SiteMaster.

Diagnosis tools for maintenance and test devices for robustness of the base station
Local Maintenance Terminal (LMT)
Rubidium clock (used to locate the clock of the base station)
Spare parts
NOTE
When some parts are faulty and thus need to be replaced, arrange related tools and new parts for

This describes the routine maintenance for the hardware items in the BTS3900. The hardware
items that are routinely maintained refer to the equipment room environment of the base station,
power supply and grounding system of the base station, and main components in the BTS3900.
3.1 Maintenance Items of the Equipment Room Environment of the Base Station
This provides the maintenance items, maintenance intervals, operation instructions, and
reference standards of the base station equipment room environment.
3.2 Power Supply and Grounding System Maintenance Items of the Base Station
This provides the maintenance items, maintenance intervals, operation instructions, and
reference standards of the base station power supply and grounding system.

4 Powering On and Powering Off a BTS3900Cabinet
About This Chapter
This describes how to power on and power off a BTS3900 cabinet. The procedures for powering
off the BTS3900 cabinet in normal and emergency cases are different.
4.1 Powering On the BTS3900
This describes how to power on the BTS3900 cabinet and handle the power supply failure to
the internal parts of the cabinet.
4.2 Powering Off the BTS3900
This describes how to power off the BTS3900 cabinet. The BTS3900 power-off is classified
into normal power-off and emergency power-off.

4.1 Powering On the BTS3900
This describes how to power on the BTS3900 cabinet and handle the power supply failure to
the internal parts of the cabinet.
Prerequisite
l The input power cables are correctly and securely connected.
l The power input of the BTS3900 cabinet meets the specifications.
l The power switches on the DCDU are all set to OFF.
l The external power supply to the BTS3900 cabinet is disconnected.
Context
Table 4-1 lists the power switches on the DCDU.

CAUTION
The cabinet must be powered on in seven days after unpacked. In addition, the cabinet cannot
be in the power-off state for more than 48 hours during maintenance.
Procedure
Step 1 Switch on the external power equipment to power on the cabinet.

If... Then...
The cabinets are BTS3900 (+24 V) cabinet and BTS3900 (220 V) cabinet, Go to Step 2.
The cabinet is BTS3900 (-48 V) cabinet, Go to Step 3.
Step 2 Check whether the PSU is running properly by referring to PSU (AC/DC) and PSU (DC/DC).
Step 3 Check whether the input voltage of the DCDU in the BTS3900 is normal.
If... Then...
The input voltage of the DCDU is not in the
range -38.4 V DC to -57 V DC,
The DC power supply inside the cabinet is
abnormal, go to Step 4.
The input voltage of the DCDU is in the
range -38.4 V DC to -57 V DC,
The cabinet power-on check is complete. Go to
Step 7.
Step 4 Switch off the external power supply of the BTS3900 cabinet to disconnect the power supply tothe cabinet.
Step 5 Check the connection and routing of the power cables for the DCDU.
Step 6 Go to Step 3 to check whether the input voltage of the DCDU is normal.
Step 7 Switch on the power switches on the DCDU, and then check the DC power supply to the internalparts of the cabinet based on Table 4-2.

Step 8 When there is a power supply failure to the internal parts of the cabinet after powering on the
cabinet, check the following items listed in Table 4-3.

Power supply failure to a board in the cabinet Check the following items:
1. Remove the board, and then check whether
the pins of the board slot on the backplane
are distorted, broken, or missing. Replace
the subrack if necessary.
2. Install the board into the subrack and check
the LED on the board.
3. If the LED blinks improperly, remove the
board and insert it into another idle slot that
can house the board of the same type.
Then, check the LED on the board.
l If the board works properly, you can
infer that the slot is faulty. Replace the
subrack.

Power supply failure to any other part in the

Use a multimeter to measure the input voltage

5 Replacing the BTS3900 ComponentsAbout This Chapter
Replacing the BTS3900 components involves replacing the BBU components, DCDU-01, FAN
unit, PMU, PSU, GATM, RFU, and power supply subrack.
5.1 Replacing BBU3900 Parts
This describes how to replace the BBU3900 parts. The BBU3900 parts consist of the BBU3900,
and the internal boards of the BBU3900.
5.2 Replacing a DCDU-01 Module
The DCDU-01, installed under the BBU, supplies DC power for the cabinet and performs surge
protection. Replacing the DCDU-01 disrupts the services carried on the corresponding cabinet.
It takes about 20 minutes to replace the DCDU-01.
5.3 Replacing the FAN Unit
The FAN unit works with the air inlet box in the cabinet to form a ventilation path. The FAN
unit provides forced ventilation and dissipation for the BBU and RFU. Replacing the FAN unit
may result in over-temperature alarms due to interruption of heat dissipation for the cabinet but
has no negative effect on services of the BTS. It takes about 20 minutes to replace a FAN unit.
5.4 Replacing the PMU
When the PMU is faulty and cannot be repaired in time, you must replace it.
5.5 Replacing a PSU
When a PSU is faulty and cannot be repaired in time, you must replace it.
5.6 Replacing the GATM
This describes how to replace the GSM antenna and TMA control module (GATM). The GATM
controls the RET antenna and supplies power to the TMA. The replacement of the GATM
disrupts the services carried on it.
5.7 Replacing an RFU
The RFU is an RF filter unit, which is located in the RFC. Replacing an RFU disrupts all the
services carried on the RFU.
5.8 Replacing the BTS3900 Power Subrack
The power subrack is located in the lower part of the BTS3900 cabinet. It houses PSUs and PMUand provides power input and output ports. It takes about 25 minutes to replace a power subrack.

5.1 Replacing BBU3900 Parts
This describes how to replace the BBU3900 parts. The BBU3900 parts consist of the BBU3900,
and the internal boards of the BBU3900.
5.1.1 Replacing the BBU3900
This describes how to replace the BBU3900. The BBU3900 is the BTS control unit and enables
the interaction between the BTS and the BSC. The replacement of the BBU3900 disrupts all the
services carried on the BTS.
5.1.2 Replacing the BBU Parts
This describes how to replace the faulty UBFA, UPEU, UEIU, GTMU, UELP, UFLP, USCU,
and optical module.
5.1.1 Replacing the BBU3900This describes how to replace the BBU3900. The BBU3900 is the BTS control unit and enables
the interaction between the BTS and the BSC. The replacement of the BBU3900 disrupts all the
services carried on the BTS.
Prerequisite
1. The configuration (involving hardware and software) of the faulty BBU3900 is determined
and a new BBU3900 of the same configuration is available.
2. The tools and materials are ready. The required tools and materials are ESD gloves, an ESD
wrist strap, a Phillips screwdriver, a flat-head screwdriver, an ESD box or bag, dustfree
cloth, and a fiber cleaner.
Context
Replacing the BBU3900 involves disconnecting and connecting cables. It takes about 30 minutes
to replace the BBU3900.
WARNING
The replacement of the BBU3900 disrupts all the services carried on the BTS. Therefore, perform
this task with caution.
WARNING
You must take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear an ESD wrist strap or a pair
of ESD gloves to prevent the boards, modules, or electrical components from being damaged
by static electricity generated by your body.
Procedure
Step 1 Power off the BTS in a common situation.

Step 2 Label the cables on the BBU3900 and remove the cables. Then, take proper insulation measuresto remove the BBU3900 and put it in an ESD box.
Step 3 Unpack the new BBU3900, check the BBU3900, and ensure that the BBU3900 is intact, the DIP
switches are properly set, and the hardware version is consistent with the BBU3900 to bereplaced. Then, install the new BBU3900. Install the cables on the panel of the new board
according to the recorded installation positions.
Step 4 Switch on the external power supply to the BTS and power on the BTS.
Step 5 Perform software loading and data configuration for GTMU on the LMT.

Replacing a UBFA
The UBFA is the fan module in the BBU. The UBFA and the air inlet box in the BBU form a
ventilation loop, implementing forced heat dissipation for the BBU. During the replacement of
the UBFA, the heat generated by the BBU cannot be properly ventilated and, with temperature
increase, an overtemperature alarm is reported. The services, however, are not affected.
Prerequisite
l The quantity of faulty UBFAs is checked, and new modules are ready.
l The installation position of the faulty UBRA and status of the LEDs on the UBFA are
recorded.
l The required tools and materials such as ESD wrist strap/ESD gloves and ESD box/ESD
bag are kept ready.
Context
This board is hot swappable.
It takes about three minutes to replace a UBFA, which involves removing the faulty UBFA,
installing the new UBFA, and waiting for the new UBFA to start working properly.

l The quantity and types of faulty GTMUs are confirmed, and new GTMUs are ready.
l The LED status and cable connections on the faulty GTMU and the cable position on the
panel of the GTMU are recorded.
l The logs and history alarms before the alarm is generated are extracted.
l The operation logs of the board are extracted.

gloves, to prevent electrostatic damage to the boards, modules, or electronic components.
NOTE
The GTMU hereinafter mentioned in this document is the first type.
Procedure
Step 1 Block the faulty GTMU on the OM system.
Step 2 Remove the faulty GTMU.
1. Attach temporary labels to the cables, and then disconnect the cables from the faulty
GTMU.
2. Loosen the screws on the panel of the faulty GTMU.
3. Turn the ejector lever outwards, and then remove the faulty GTMU from the slot.
4. Put the faulty GTMU into the ESD bag.
Step 3 Install a new GTMU.
1. Place and slide the new GTMU into the original slot where the faulty GTMU is installed.
2. Turn the ejector lever inwards, and then tighten the screws on the panel of the new GTMU.
3. Connect the cables to the panel of the new GTMU according to the temporary labels.
Step 4 Check the status of the LEDs to ensure that the new board runs properly.
NOTE
For details on the LEDs, see GTMU.
Step 5 Determine whether related alarms are reported.
1. Query the active alarms of the board on the OM system.
2. If active alarms are reported, clear them according to the handling suggestion. If no alarm
is reported, go to Step 6.
Step 6 Activate the BootROM or software version of the new board.
Step 7 Check and ensure that the version of the new board is consistent with the latest version on theexisting network. If not, upgrade the version of the new board.
Step 8 Unblock the new board on the OM system.

The USCU is the extended satellite card clock unit of the BBU3900. It receives clock signalssuch as the GPS, RGPS, BITS, and M-1PPS signals. In addition, it transmits or receives 1PPS
+TOD clock signals. Replacing the USCU does not affect the services.
Prerequisite
l The quantity and type of faulty USCUs are confirmed, and new USCUs is ready.
l The cable connections on the faulty USCU and their positions on the panel of the USCU
are recorded.
l The status of the LEDs on the panel of the board is recorded, and the operation log of the
main control board is exported.
l The tools and materials, such as an ESD wrist strap or a pair of ESD gloves and an ESDbox or bag, are ready.

are available.
l The installation positions of the faulty optical modules and optical cables are recorded. The
interconnection relations for the optical cables are also recorded.
l The required tools and materials such as ESD wrist strap/ESD gloves and ESD box/ESD
bag are kept ready.
Context
The optical module can be installed in the CPRI0-CPRI5 ports on the GTMU.
The optical module is hot swappable.
It takes about five minutes to replace the optical module of the BBU. The duration of the
replacement involves the removal of the optical cable and the faulty optical module, the
installation of the new optical module, the connection of the optical cable to the optical module,
and the time elapsed for the restoration of the CPRI links.

5.2 Replacing a DCDU-01 Module
The DCDU-01, installed under the BBU, supplies DC power for the cabinet and performs surge
protection. Replacing the DCDU-01 disrupts the services carried on the corresponding cabinet.
It takes about 20 minutes to replace the DCDU-01.
Prerequisite
l The model of the faulty DCDU-01 is confirmed and the new DCDU-01 of the same model
is available.
l The new DCDU-01 module is intact, and the hardware version of the new DCDU-01 is
consistent with that of the faulty DCDU-01.
l The tools and materials, such as an ESD wrist strap or a pair of ESD gloves, a Phillips
screwdriver, an ESD box or bag, and the key to the cabinet door, are available.

Procedure
Step 1 Power off the BTS3900.
Step 2 Mark the cables connected to the output ports on the DCDU-01, and then disconnect them.
Step 3 Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the protection cover from the external power input wiringterminal block of the DCDU-01, as shown in Figure 5-1.

Step 4 Mark the external input power cable for the DCDU-01, and then disconnect the cable.

Step 6 Remove the DCDU-01 module by pulling out the DCDU-01 with one hand, and holding theDCDU-01 with the other hand.
Step 7 Put the faulty DCDU-01 into an ESD box.
Step 8 Install the new DCDU-01 into the position where the original one is located, and then use thefour removed M6x12 screws to fasten the DCDU-01 to the subrack.
Step 9 Insert the OT terminal of the power cable into the corresponding cable hole in the wiring terminalblock. Connect the OT terminal of the -48 V power cable (blue) to the terminal labeled NEG(-),
and then connect the OT terminal of the GND cable (black) to the terminal labeled RTN(+).
Step 10 Place the protection cover on the DCDU-01, and then tighten the screw on the protection coverby using the Phillips screwdriver.
Step 11 Remove the rubber covers from the DCDU-01 power sockets on the new DCDU-01 panel.
Step 12 Connect the removed cables to the power output ports on the DCDU-01 panel according to themarks.
Step 13 Power on the BTS3900.

l Check that the cable connections are correct and secure.
l Ensure that the related alarms are cleared on the M2000 or LMT after the equipment is

5.3 Replacing the FAN Unit
The FAN unit works with the air inlet box in the cabinet to form a ventilation path. The FAN
unit provides forced ventilation and dissipation for the BBU and RFU. Replacing the FAN unit
may result in over-temperature alarms due to interruption of heat dissipation for the cabinet but
has no negative effect on services of the BTS. It takes about 20 minutes to replace a FAN unit.
Prerequisite
l A new FAN unit is ready.l Ensure that the new FAN unit is in good condition and the version of the new FAN unit is
consistent with that of the faulty FAN unit.
l The required tools and materials, such as ESD wrist strap, Phillips screwdriver, ESD box
or bag, and the key to the cabinet door, are available.

Context
CAUTION

Procedure
Step 1 Set the DC distribution switch FAN labeled on the DCDU-01 to OFF. Figure 5-3 shows theposition of the FAN unit switch on the DCDU-01.

Step 2 Label the cables on the panel of the FAN unit and then remove the cables.
Step 3 Loosen the captive screws on both sides of the adjustable cable trough. Then, raise the cabletrough and fix it at the upper mounting hole, as shown in Figure 5-4.

Step 1 Disconnect the cables from the panel of the PMU, and then label the cables.
CAUTION
When inserting or removing the DB50 connector of the environment monitoring signal cable,
you must hold the connector with both hands and keep it perpendicular to the panel, to preventfalse alarms caused by bent pins.
Step 2 Loosen the screws on the handle of the PMU panel by using a screwdriver.
Step 3 Pull the handle gently to disconnect the buckle of the PMU from the subrack, and then removethe PMU from the slot, as shown in Figure 5-6.

5.6 Replacing the GATM
This describes how to replace the GSM antenna and TMA control module (GATM). The GATM
controls the RET antenna and supplies power to the TMA. The replacement of the GATM
disrupts the services carried on it.
Prerequisite
The required tools and materials, such as ESD wrist strap, cross screwdriver, ESD box or bag,
dustfree cotton cloth, and key to the cabinet door, are available.
Context
WARNING
Take proper ESD prevention measures, for example, wear ESD wrist straps or gloves to prevent
the boards, modules, and electronic components from being damaged by the static electricity
generated by human body.
Procedure
Step 1 Set the power switch on the DCDU that corresponds to the GATM to be replaced to OFF.
Step 2 Label the cables on the GATM, and then disconnect the cables.
Step 3 Use a cross screwdriver to loosen the four screws on the GATM panel, as shown in Figure5-11.

Step 4 Pull out the GATM by one-third of its length. Then, hold the GATM with one hand and removeit from the subrack.
Step 5 Place the removed GATM in an ESD box.
Step 6 Ensure that the new GATM is in good condition and that the hardware version of the new GATMis consistent with that of the faulty GATM.
Step 7 Install a new GATM. Hold the panel of the new GATM module with one hand and the bottomof the module with the other hand, and push it into the cabinet along the guide rail. Then, tighten
the screws on the mounting ears at the two sides of the module.
Step 8 Connect the cables to the ports on the new GATM panel based on the labels.

Postrequisite1. Ensure that the RUN LED on the GATM panel is green and blinks slowly at 0.5 Hz after
the GATM is powered on.
2. Check that the related alarms on the M2000 or LMT are cleared after the GATM is powered
on.
3. Record the bar code, name, and PCB version of the faulty board.
4. Check whether there is obvious physical damage to the board. The damage may be burned
PCB, burned components, distorted connectors, bent pins, or broken pins.
5. Record the fault information, such as the cause, symptom, and site name.
6. Put the board into the ESD bag, and then put the bag into the board box. Keep it properly.
7. Contact the local Huawei office to dispose of the faulty board.
5.7 Replacing an RFU
The RFU is an RF filter unit, which is located in the RFC. Replacing an RFU disrupts all the
services carried on the RFU.
Prerequisite
l The model of the faulty RFU is confirmed, and a new RFU of the same model is ready.
l
The new RFU is intact, and its hardware version is consistent with that of the faulty RFU.l The tools and materials, such as an ESD wrist strap or a pair of ESD gloves, Phillips
screwdriver, ESD box or bag, dustfree cloth, RFU handle, key to the cabinet door, and
torque wrench, are ready.
Context
It takes about 6 to 10 minutes to replace an RFU, which involves disconnecting the cables,
removing screws, removing the faulty RFU, inserting a new RFU, tightening the screws,
connecting the cables to the new RFU, and loading software.
WARNING
l Take proper ESD protection measures, for example, wear an ESD wrist strap or a pair of
ESD gloves, to prevent electrostatic damage to the boards, modules, or electronic
components.
l The RFU is heavy. Therefore, handle it with caution.
Procedure
Step 1 Locate the faulty RFU, and then run the BLK BRD command on the LMT to block the faultyRFU.

NOTE
Although this step can be performed either remotely or locally, you are advised to perform this step
remotely.
Step 2 Power off the RFU by setting the power switch on the DCDU-01 that corresponds to the faultyRFU to OFF.
Step 3 Remove the power cable of the faulty RFU, and then attach a temporary label to the cable.
Step 4 Use a torque wrench to loosen the DIN 7/16 male elbow connector of the RF jumper, removethe RF jumper, and then attach a temporary label to the jumper.
Step 5 Remove the CPRI cable from the RFU, and then attach a temporary label to the cable.
CAUTION
When removing the CPRI cable, do not look directly at the optical fiber. Otherwise, your eyes
may be hurt.
Step 6 Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the four screws on the RFU panel.
Step 7 Insert the standard handle delivered with the BTS into the lockhole at the center part of the RFUpanel. Turn the standard handle outwards by 90, and then pull out the module by holding the
standard handle firmly with one hand. Support the bottom of the the module with the other hand,
and then remove the module until it is completed removed from the subrack, as shown in Figure
5-12.

Step 9 Place the new RFU on the corresponding guide rails, and then slide it along the rails until it isin position.
Step 10 Tighten the four captive screws at the four corners of the RFU to install the RFU securely onthe subrack.
Step 11 Insert the connector into the CPRI0 or CPRI1 port on the RFU according to the temporary labelon the CPRI cable.
Step 12 Fix the DIN 7/16 male elbow connector of the RF jumper to the ANT port on the RFU. Then,use a torque wrench to secure the DIN male elbow connector with the torque specification of
25 Nm to 35 Nm.
Step 13 Install the power cable of the RFU, and then tighten the screws.
Step 14 Set the corresponding DC output power switch on the panel of the DCDU to ON to power onthe RFU.
Step 15 Activate the RFU BootROM or software version.
1. Run the DSP BRDVERcommand to query the BootROM and software versions of the
new RFU.
2. If the software version is incorrect, run the ACT SOFTWARE command to reactivate the
BootROM or software version of the new RFU.

The power subrack is located in the lower part of the BTS3900 cabinet. It houses PSUs and PMU
and provides power input and output ports. It takes about 25 minutes to replace a power subrack.
Prerequisite
l The type of the faulty power subrack is confirmed and the new power subrack is ready.
l The tools and materials, such as an ESD wrist strap, Phillips screwdriver, ESD box or bag,
and key to the cabinet door, are ready.
