Social Media Literacy

“Social Media Literacy is having the proficiency to communicate appropriately, responsibly and to evaluate conversations

critically within the realm of socially-based technologies.”

- Researcher Karen Tillman

–Electronic Communications: Adapting presentation materials for web-based, videoconference, and teleconference formats; tailoring the agenda and content for a geographically diverse audience; using social media effectively.

Filtering Software

• There are software suites you can purchase to monitor your child’s Internet usage; many even enable you to view the exact keys that were typed, time spent online and all computer activity in general. Popular programs such as Net Nanny and PureSight PC let you monitor social media sites, block chats, filter content and much more. You can even monitor your child’s cell phone with a software program like My Mobile Watchdog.

• A pop-up ad appears and tells kids they can win a free iPad by simply clicking the link. Anyone would be tempted by this kind of offer, but kids are particularly susceptible, so it’s important to warn kids against falling for this kind of Internet trick. Many of these ruses are attempts to glean personal information.

Urge your kids to avoid questionnaires / contests

You Are Connected To Them

• You Are Friends With Them on Facebook

• You Get to Follow Them on Twitter

• You Get to Follow Them on Instagram

• California Education Code §234(b) which ensures “local educational agencies continue to work to reduce discrimination, harassment, violence, intimidation, and bullying”.

• The code now states “bullying, including bullying committed personally or by means of an electronic act, which includes the posting of messages on a social network Internet Website…”.

Lessons...

• For example... Create a hashtag ...

• #FrenchRevolution

• Takes users straight to “your own space” on Twitter..this is like having an on-line class

• Instantly becomes an on-line threaded discussion that outlasts the shelf life of that class that day

Surveys and Opinions without talking to you

• Instant results by favorites and retweets to your lessons, events and projects

Relationships w/students

• 140 characters does not seem like a great deal until you see them in their own twitter world.

• Reciprocity

• Accountability

• What is really important

it matters whom you follow

• Those who follow

• Those who have followers

• Why?
