A MINUTE WITH THE MEENTS
The American Hereford Association is collaboration with Dr. David Steffen and Dr. Jessica Peterson, at the University of Nebraska has discovered a defect in Hereford cattle called Mandibulofacial Dysostosis (MD). This genetic defect is considered autosomal recessive, meaning an
affected calf must have two carrier parents. The following are findings from the Dr. Steffen and Dr. Peterson: Four Hereford calves were presented in March and April of 2020 with unusual defects of the face and jaw. Autopsy, evaluation of breeding records and genotyping were a cooperative effort. The calves originated from three herds, each in a different state, making an environmental cause unlikely. Autopsy of the calves revealed shared, unique abnormal facial features. Breeding records demonstrated a common sire in the pedigree of both the sire and dam of each affected calf. The similarity in the defect among the calves and the pedigree analysis together suggested a new deleterious recessive mutation may exist. The anatomic features overlap with a variety of other facial defects and can include cleft palate, short jaw, and crooked jaw or face. The unique and consistent hallmarks of the condition include unusual bilateral skin tags are attached to an unusual bone formation. There may be additional skin tags near or below the ears. A ridge of Mackel’s cartilage, a structure usually present only during embryonic development, is retained in these calves’ and attaches to the skin tag. This cartilage is encased in bone as it is followed from the skin tag toward the base of the ear. This bone attaches specifically to the zygomatic process of the temporal bone. The calves’ ears are sometimes slightly small and floppy. Muscles of the jaw are underdeveloped, and the calves may have an elongate oral opening appearing as an exaggerated smile. The nursing reflex is present, but nursing is not vigorous. Calves with the additional cleft palate, and/or severely shorted or crooked jaw are debilitated in their ability to nurse. Calves with the defect are live born but not able to thrive.
A list of Identified carriers on MD is published in the July 2020 Hereford World, page 11, or can be found on the AHA website, www.hereford.org As of August 3, 2020, there is a test for MD. It is a stand-alone test at the cost of $20. To do a GE-EPD test with a MD test the cost is $55. To test any registered Hereford, contact the AHA customer service in Kansas City at 816- 842-3757. If you would like to learn more about this genetic defect, read the article on pages 10 -11 in the July 2020 Hereford World written by Shane Bedwell, COO and Director of Breed Improvement of the AHA. This genetic abnormality can be easily managed. Remember both sire and dam must be MD carriers for the offspring to be a carrier. When a test is available, I recommend offspring of the carriers listed as carriers be tested. If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 419-306-7480.

Presidents Letter
Well when I sat down to write this in April we were in the “heat” of Covid-19, and we all were looking forward to summer and the virus going down in infection level and getting out and getting back to some semblance of our “normal” lives. Well it is the first of August and we aren’t where we thought we would be in our lives. Our State Fair has been cancelled (as have those of most states), many county fairs cancelled, at least most are having the junior portion, Keystone International in Harrisburg cancelled, etc. etc. Now we are wondering if our schools are going to resume normal operation or restart the online learning from home, will our students get to play sports, march in the band, etc. The list as we all know doesn’t end. Even the weather over the past several months has been a bit unusual. Seems as though now we have moved into the very unpredictable part; some areas have been getting plenty of rain, others are suffering lack of moisture, seems we all have had extreme heat. I hope at your house the corn is eared-up, the beans setting pods and your Hereford cattle grazing green grass, with plenty of hay in the shed. Our Juniors overcame a great deal of adversity as well this summer from showing out of their trailer to having to change the direction of their truck to attend the Junior National. We appreciate and our proud of you Juniors, thanks for your perseverance and best of luck this fall on
your return to school, jobs, sports, and Hereford cows. As we prepare for fall, plans have been underway for the futurity, originally planned to move to central part of the state at the Morrow County Fairgrounds in Mt. Gilead on September 27-28. However, it looks as though that may get derailed, so John Founds of your Board is trying to find alternative sites, Lisa will post updates on the website and Facebook page as they develop. We hope that our show will come together and have the chance to see you there. Also please plan to attend our member’s sales this fall. September 5: The Breeders Cup Sale at Boyd Beef Cattle, Mays Lick, KY; September 14: Hill and Hollow Online Auction, Bradford, OH; October 31: Mohican Farms and Guests Production Sale, Glenmont, OH; November 7: Combined Excellence Sale, Mason, OH; December 3: Kentucky Hereford Influenced Feeder Calf Sale, Stanford, KY; January 4, 2021: Great Midwest Certified Hereford Influenced Feeder Calf Sale, Carthage, IL. Until we see each other again, best of luck with your final cuttings of hay, harvest, weaning and breeding. We wish our junior breeders the very best as they go back to school, participate in their sports and band and other activities or make that trip to college. Best regards to all, be safe and looking forward to seeing you again soon. Respectfully, Tim Osborn
