How can teachers create a hybrid learning environment to augment their classroom teaching with online conversation and collaboration. This presentation, which I made at Allahabad University in Oct 2012, looks at the reasons why a hybrid approach is much needed and gives an overview of mostly free tools that can be used to create such a learning experience.

Internet  Facilitated  Learning

The  world  has  changed  and  become  more  networked...  what  is  needed  is  not  a  new  theory  for  the  digital  age,  but  a  model  that  integrates  the  different  theories  to  guide  the  design  of  online  learning  materials.

Deep  Understanding  is  about

•  Connec1ng  new  informa1on  and  knowledge  with  what  you  already  know

•  Using  and  applying  knowledge  in  novel  contexts  (which  shows  you  understand,  and  not  just  know)

1.  Make  predic1ons  to  ac1vate  Prior  Knowledge

2.  Build  curiosity  and  fire  up  intrinsic  mo1va1on  to  learn

3.  Make  learning  contextually  relevant

4.  Secure  cogni1ve  commitment  (for  the  learning  adventure)

5.  Ac1vely  engage  with  the  learning  material

6.  Make  connec1ons  (with  prior  knowledge  /  bigger  picture)
