Chris Burrow’s Story “I had been working night shifts, something I don’t typically do, and was fast asleep at home when the evacuation order was issued for my neighbourhood. I had earplugs in and was sleeping soundly when I got woken up very abruptly. I heard someone pounding their fists on my front door. They didn’t stop banging on the door until I ran downstairs in my pajamas. It was my neighbour. I didn’t have to ask what the problem was. I saw a 200-foot wall of flame. It was so close and moving towards us - FAST. He saved my life. I had no idea what was going on. Had they not smashed my door in, I probably would have been consumed (by fire) within half an hour.”
Chris Burrows says it was a persistent neighbour that saved his life as the raging Fort McMurray fire closed in on the house where he was fast asleep. When disaster strikes, the most immediate help will come from those around you - your neighbours.
Your neighbourhood has already built strong relationships through the Block Watch, Crime Free Multi-Housing and Business Watch
programs. Strengthen this community by making a neighbourhood emergency plan.

Did you know that distracted driving is a form of impaired driving?
Distracted Driving can be a Disaster
Safe Cell Phone Use Tips:
• Just like a designated driver – have a designated texter!
• Using your phone at a stop sign or stop light is still an offence – just don’t do it!
• Find out more facts and tips at: www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cycp-cpcj/dd-dv/index-eng.htm or http://www.icbc.com/road-safety/safer-drivers/Documents/distractions.pdf
Really….I guess it is because a driver's judgment is compromised
when they are not fully focused on the road?
Exactly! Examples include: talking on a cell phone , texting, reading (e.g. books, maps, and newspapers), using a GPS, watching videos or movies, and even eating or drinking!
My motto is it can wait! No call or text is so important that I am going to
risk my life or others. I lock my phone in the trunk so I am not tempted!
