Editors Crescent :I have just finished witnessingthe eclipse, which was magnificent; at the point offirst contact, unfortunately, it was cloudy, but after-wards it cleared offand you could easily see the moonas it were making her way into the sun, and whenabout threefourths through, they both sunk. Whatwas most remarkable was the distinctness with whichthe mountains iflile moon could be seen against thebody of the sun, standing out in clear relief and show-ing that there is no atmosphere in the moon, confirm-ing former theories. One mountain in particular, about three degees above the lower link showedvery distinct. Those who took the trouble togo tothe lake, or climb to the house-top, were well repaid.

-Yours truly, As Onsauven.

A MlonoL Coaoh•an.--One f the charges preferredfor the removal of Coroner Connery, of New York, inconsequence of the manner in which he conductedthe Burdell inquest, was that he, the Coroner, causedher to be stripped entirely naked, for the purpose ofsearching her, and this in the presence of the accused, three other men and a lady. A day or two after thisshameful occurrence. the following note appeared inthe New York papers, signed by Mrs. Cunaingham,s thle wife of Dr. Burdell :

This is to certify that the examination of my per-son, by dMr. Wood0ard, was conducted in the mostdelicate manner. There was no indecent exposure, and it was at mi request that it was done.

Wednesday, beb. ith, 1 u57. E. A. BUBDELL.lrs. C. declares that she did not write this not•e

but that immediately after the affairio her confusionand excitement, she signed a paper without knowingits contents. She was not permitted, during the in-restigation, to see the paper she had signed, to con-verse with her friends, nor to read the newspapers, consequently she was not aware of the publication.

A reporter of the New York Express helld a con-versation with her, from whichweextract the follow-ing :

Reporlrr--I perceive, Madam, that your counselhas, among other accusations, preferred a chargeagainst Coroner Connery, to the effect that he causedyou to be stripped naked in the presence of two othermen, who were not medical men.

21frs. C.-Thatis correct, sir; Ican assure you, sir, that 1 was ordered to strip myself; that I wasstripped down to my toes an stood in a perfectlynude state before Deputy John, an officer, Dr. Wood.ward, and a lady who was permitted to remain in theroom at my special request. * * * * *I repeat, sir, that I was stripped down to my toes, and stood perfectly nude in the presence of Dr. Wuod-ward. John, Connery, an officer, and the lady I havementioned, and for a woman of my age and the moth-or oi so many children, to be so treated, you may im-agine how I felt, but I cannot describe it.

Now is it possible for any Coroner to institute amore searching investigation than this? For suchextraordinary zeal in the cause of justice he shouldhave been strtpped himself, not only of his office butof his garments, and "tanned" thoroughly withavery dursble cowhide.

LIEBL SctS.- Col. Fuller, of the Nhew York Mirror, has commenced suits for libel against Bennett, of theHerald, and F. C. Adams, for a communication pub-lished by the latter in the Herald. The article wascalculated to impair the Colonel's credit and moralcharacter.

DESPrERTE.-A young woman of loose character, who was about to be arrested in New York a fewdays ago on a charge of larceny, threw herself froma third-story window upon the pavement below. Shereceived fatal injuries, but was alive when taken to ahospital.

WALKERn S CONDITION. --"An opponent of theWalker movement" closes a long article in a recentnumber of the New York Times with the followingpostscript :

It must be remembered that, once having effecteda junction with Henningsen, Lockridge would be ashelpless as the men he goes to help. Twice hiswholeforce would not suffice to garrison and keep open theriver; and the Costa RIticans, returning to their deterted entrelchmenta, would have only so many morecvictims in the trap. Tile river is like two plates ofspring-steel, meeting at anll acute angle and openingvertically; you may force your way up--but ouleSyou leave a soufficient force to hbld it open, it willclose behind you and cut ol' retreat.

Thous far those of the New York papers that haveindulged in speculations regarding Nicaraguan affairshave invariably been wide of the mark. They basetheir reasoning upon abstractions, and talk learnedlyand predict confidently of subjects upon which theyknow nothing practically.

ANOTHIER AitROWSITH.--We think a Canadianjournalist has no excuse for being as stupidly igno.rant of American aflairs as his brethren in England.Itead the following article from the Iugersoll Chroni-cle, Canada West, of the Gth inst :

The Homicide inlie U. S. Senale--Another of thosedreadful scenes by which the federal nation has gailleditell it bad repultation, has occurred. A personal at-tack being made opon a member of the Senate, hedefended hileself with a deadly weapon. and sent theae•ailant at once " to his account."' Atrocious as tileact may seem at first, and reprehensible as done indeliance of the law, we are of opinion that it tookplace under strongly extenuating, if not justlifiable, cilr•oumstances. It' there be any o0e thing more thanansther that tile colstitution of society must hold as-ered to a man, it is certainly his own person. Weare far frotm drawing the coaclusoon hence, that lee isat liberty, in nil circumstances, to take the life of onewho determinedly and aforethought invades that per-son. The law is open for redress, although, in ouro Oinion, it ouglt to be made far more stringent thanit is in relrence to such cases. But in this instaonce,we presume thalit the homicide aimed simply at thepreservation of his own life, which, after tile a-c otIMr. Sumner, lie might expect to be endangrel-d by thlebrutality oft the assailant, to the last degree. If so.we thinlek he must stand acquitted in the eourt of hi,own conscience, nd ougllt to he and will be in that of Ihis country. It is time these bullyings were put down, Iaud ineopeleative as the law is in the United States,we can hardly wonder or regret that one of its emi-nent practitionler should thus have been prostrated inhis attempt, even though the interposer was the mIes.aenger of dealth. The writer evidently alludes to the murder of Mr.

David Hime by D. C. Lee, in the Pension Office, andthis renders it apparent that he did lnot know the dit-terence between the Peunionu hpartmeet and theCuitled States Senate.

Ge. Barney, with his escort, was also sxpoted tojoin him, and we feel confident will render a good ac-count should he be fortunate enough to fall in withthe enemy.

A detachment of Capt. Johnson's company ofmounted volunteers arrived at Fort Myers on the 7thinst., from Fish-eating Greek, bringing with them asquawand herson, a little boy. Her husband waskilled by a party of Oapt. Johnseon's company on theday previous to her capture.

One factis gvident-fromtheabove : that the hauntsof a portion of tha Indiana have been discovered ;which is the main thing. in this Seminole hunt. Ifthey can only be kept track of the war will soon beterminated.

TnE RAT PotrNingo C.sE.--More Mfysteryn.-Theeditor of the Day Book, who was at the NationalHotel at the time of the Inauguration, rejects therattheory, and sums op a careful article reviewing thewhole case as follows:.' Horace If. Day, Esq., is now lying very low in this

city..He was a boarder there, and no doubt isaffected precisely as Mrs. Adams. A daughter ofSenator James is also very sick and under the chargeof Dr. Marcy. Dr. Leon has several patients, in-cluding a child of the writer; who Is very low. Thatwe have all been poisoned by some substance dailyadministered to us in the food is beyond a question. What that substance was, how or by whom adminis-tered, remains a mystery. The proprietors of thehouse, we are eatisfied, have used every eflort andmeans in their power to find out the caouse of thiswidespreod infliction, but in vain. To them it is asprofound a mystery as to any in the land."

And the National Intellieencer thinks that the evilis " not yet eradicated from the establishment," and"may extend itself and involve consequences far moreoerious than any that have yet occurred?"

WEATHER IN EAST MMISsoarIPPI.- The PauldingClarion of the 14th inst. says :

We have had a return of regular winter weatherduring the present week. A killing frost fell onWednesday night, and the ground froze to the depthof half an inch. Thursday night it sleeted in goodotyle, the sleet remaining on the roofs of the housesuntil nearly 12 o'clook yesterday. The fruit is allsupposed to be killed-so too with the forward gar-dens, while we hear planters who have corn in theground talk of plowing up and replanting.

THE DRED SCoTT DcstIONw.-The Abolition jour-nals, after heartily abusing " the scoundrels" of theU. S. Supreme Court, are rapidly coming to the con-elusion-that big scoundrels as they are, they haveonly decided that a negro isnot a citizen of the Uni-ted States. As evenin New York, we have been de-ciding all that for years, by refusing to let negroesintermarry with oar children-have kept them off guarjuries and militia-kicked them out of railroad cars, churches, grave yards and free schools-why callJudges scoundrels for legally coarrying out our own

ractical decisions? Nevertheless, the Court will bedenounced as bah-room politicians, and as a set ofocoundrel:, just as bitterly as ever. [N. Y. Express.

TaE ART•IAN WELL.--The new bore has reachedthe depth of 760 feet, and is progressing well. Theimprovements inimplements and machinery suggestedby the experience of Maj. Welton, with the use ofsteam power, have facilitated operations to a rare pro.gress far beyond what was effected in the first well.Bit one drawback or delay of any importance has oc-curred, which was the breaking of a chisel in the wellsome two weeks since, occasioning some difficulty, which has now been removed.

The discharge from the first well continues inquan-tity and quality as we have reported, and in additiono a pipe supplying the Charlesotn Hotel, an accom-nodation pipe has been fitted to a pump and treoughtn Meetiog street, a few steps above Wentworth street, and promises great benefit. It has been found thathorses soon become fond of the water, and the opin-ion of liverymen and others interested is,that it is pe-culiarly wholesome for them. It has also been foundto be advantageous water for household purposes, andespecially for washing and bathing. Can we not have a cheap or public bath house for

the ensuing summer?-[Charleston Courier, 21st.

IN AT TaE Dl:ATs.-The late Josiah Sears pridedIlmsell upon never having paid money to lawyerslturing his life. The lawyers are congratulatingthbemselves, however, with the hope of realizing some-thing by his death, for they find his will so looselydrawn aas to furnish endless questions for the courts. Some dozen different versions of it are already asg.gestel. One lawyer suggests that Mr. Sears has leftthe profeesion a vested estate. It is calculated thatif the so, lives to be fifty years of age, and if thewishes of the testator are in every respect carried outtie property will amount at the time to 20,fl-00,000.The son can. at no time of his life, receive more than$10,000 a year out of the income. The.lhride of Emile de Girardin, the late editor ofthe l'rais Presse, does not seem to be burdened withtoo much clasic lore. Hler husband recently took herto the theater to witness the represaentation of" Zaire." The lady was so much pleased with the

tlaiy that she requested her husband to introduce herto the author. " That's easy enough," replied he,leading her politely in Iroat of a bult of Voltaire.
