Going Beyond AvailabilityTo meet the challenges of enterprise data today, a new data management strategy is required… one that takes a holistic approach to data across its lifecycle, merging the traditional disciplines of
• Backup and Recovery• Data Protection• Data Security• Data Management
“Recently” Released Product Milestones
• Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 1.5 (October 2017)• Veeam Availability Console 2.0 (November 2017)• Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 3 (December 2017)• Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 2.1 (December 2017)• Veeam Agent for Linux 2.0 (December 2017)• Veeam Restore to Microsoft Azure featuring Veeam PN (January 2018)• Veeam Availability Orchestrator (March 2018)• Veeam Availability Console 2.0 Update 1 (June 2018)• Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 3a (July 2018)• Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 356 2.0 (July 2018)
Announced Features and Products
Backup & Replication Features
• Archive Tier 1.0• Roll Based Access Control for vSphere• Tape as a Service for Veeam Cloud Connect• Cloud Gateway Pools for Veeam Cloud Connect• vCloud Director Support for Veeam Cloud Connect Replication

Archive Tier 2.0
Hyper-growth of data driving hyper-growth of backup data
Compliancy requirements demanding long-term data retention for archival data
Reducing the costs of complying with long-term data retention requirements pushes IT to leverage:
• Lower-cost data storage• Tiered approach to storage management
The Challenge
Announced last year, the Archive Tier feature of Scale-out Backup Repository facilitates moving older backup files to cheaper storage, such as cloud or on-prem object storage

Archive Tier v2 allows for truly unlimited SOBR capacity and scale at a fraction of the storage costs
v2 architecture extends SOBR into the cloud seamlessly resulting in Infinite Storage
Importantly, the new implementation still preserves our major differentiator of self-contained backup files
How does it work?
Archive Tier v2 (Cloud Archive)
Infinite Storage: Dehydration
S3
VBK
Metadata
Data
Dehydrated VBKBackup repository
Archived backup files remains physically present on a SOBR extent in a form of dehydrated “shells” containing pointers to archived blocks (also serving as a local cache)
Veeam Data Mover can read dehydrated backup files transparently, so all Veeam functionality just works
Dehydration into the archive extent is forever-incremental, effectively providing source-side deduplication between full backups for significant storage and bandwidth savings
Cloud Archive: How It Works
Archive Tier expands SOBR capacity infinitely by leveraging virtually endless storage offered by the public cloud to spill oldest backup files off to an object storage
Preserves unique benefits of self-contained backup files:• Shells are still files that can be rehydrated with a few clicks• In “all is lost” scenario, simply import the bucket to recreate
shells from a copy of metadata stored in object storage
No per-TB subscription for data sitting in archive extents
Cloud Archive: Differentiators
S3-compatible object storage• On-premises storage device (hardware or software-based)• S3-compatible cloud object storage from service providers
Amazon AWS• S3 and S3 IA (Infrequent Access)
Microsoft Azure• Blob storage
Supported Archive Extents
Forget-me-not
VirtualLabs is now DataLabs• On-Demand Lab
The Challenge• GDPR “right to be forgotten” mandates personal data
removed from production processes and workflows:
• Removed from all production databases• Not restored back from backups
• Backup immutability regulation demand “right to be recall” of backup personal data
• Technically impossible to remove
Resolved: Staged Restore

Quarantine
The ChallengeBackup data can be infected:
• Zero-day threats cannot be caught by antiviruses running on production computers
• Modern ransomware is purposely designed to “sleep” and try to distribute itself in the environment before activating
• Difficult to determine when an infection first occurred
Resolved: Secure RestoreNew antivirus scan feature offers an optional scan on guest file system as part of the image-level restore process.
This ensures that backups do not contain any hidden or unknown threats, and keeps the production environment safe
Optional antivirus scan ensures the chosen restore point is uninfected before restoring

The ChallengeCommon backup issues:
• Misconfigurations, environmental problems and known issues negatively impact availability
• Time to resolution lengthens because case creation, upload logs and analysis is time-consuming
• Often reliant on Application Users to report performance issues or faults
• Common misconfigurations result in 1000+ Veeam support cases per day
A Different way to Phone Home• Phone Home functionality requires Internet access from the
restricted backup server network
• Concerns of sharing environmental data with third parties
• Unavailable in environments with strict internet controls
Resolved: Intelligent Diagnostics
1. Periodically updated “issue signatures” downloaded from Veeam Customer Support KB site via proxy server (Similar to a traditional anti-virus signature)
2. Analyses B&R debug logs looking for the known issues
3. Proactively report or remediate common configuration issues before operational impact
