How do we pray in the Spirit?

What does that look like?

What is our part and what is the part of the Spirit?

Both Jesus and the Holy Spirit are making intercession for us.

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with

groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the

Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Romans 8:26-27

Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

There is never a duplication of activities in the Godhead.

If both Jesus and the Holy Spirit are making intercession for us, then the mode and activity of

that intercession must be different.

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another (allos) Helper (paraklētos), that He may abide

with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor

knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

Advocate (paraklētos) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

One who is called to one’s side and to one’s aid, one who pleads another’s cause before a judge,

a helper, advocate and counselor.

Notice the differences and distinctions of our two Intercessors.

The Intercession

Nothing can hinder the intercession of Christ because it is based on what He has already done for us (His death and resurrection), and not on what we have

done or are doing for Him.

But we can help or hinder the intercession of the Spirit by our cooperation or lack of it.

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom

we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

(And when we do) The Spirit Himself (His action) bears witness with (not to) our spirit that we are

children of God, and if children, then heirs— heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

The Holy Spirit and the human spirit become joint witnesses by the cry that comes from us.

We do the crying “Abba, Father” and the Spirit does the inspiring of the cry.

This is the beginning of praying in the Spirit.

My Action or His Action?

Praying “in” the Spirit and praying “with” the spirit are not the same thing.

What is the conclusion then? I (my action) will pray (how) with (not in) the spirit (human spirit), and I will also pray with the understanding. I (my action) will

sing (how) with (not in) the spirit (human spirit), and I will also sing with the understanding.

We are not alone in our struggle to pray.

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our (including Paul) weaknesses. For we (including Paul) do not know

what we (including Paul) should pray for as we (including Paul) ought, but the Spirit Himself (His

action) makes intercession for us (including Paul) with groanings which cannot be uttered.
