History• Built during the Joseon Dynasty by King

Taejo in 1396• Renovated in 1453 by King Danjong• Rebuilt in 1869 by King Gojong

DON EUI MUNWest Gate

History• Built in 1396 • Removed in 1413 and rebuilt in the north • Broke down in 1422 and reconstructed it again on the

west side of Seoul. • Major reconstruction 1711 • The Japanese destroyed it in 1915 due to road

construction

SOOK JUNG MUNNorth Gate

History

• Built in the Joseon Dynasty along with the other gates • Shut down in 1413 due to geographical issues. • Moved to the east side in 1504 • Closed to civilians in 1968 due to military issues • Opened back to the people in 2006

Historical Significance

• Closing of this gate showed Korean’s lifestyle of living together with nature. Because it was closed due to geographical reasons

• Opened sometimes during droughts and floods

Architectural Aspects

• Located on top of Bugaksan• Used colors like green, red, and blue which is

commonly found in Korean Architecture from the Joseon Dynasty
