BADLANDS

MAP OF BADLANDS

When did it become a park and why?

The Badlands was established on march 4, 1929 by Franklin Roosevelt. It was mark as a national park in the late 60’s. The land was owned by a tribe called Oglala Sioux tribe. It was used for military use as an Air force bombing area, and a firing range. This has been going on since world war 2.

How were the Badlands formed?

The badlands were formed in 2 ways: deposition and erosion.

•Deposition: A quick look at the badlands will reveal that the park was deposited in layers. The layers are composed of tiny sediments, such as sand, silt, and clay. The sediments were deposited during the late Cretaceous Period (67- 75 million years ago) throughout the Late Eocene (34- 37 million years ago) and Oligocene Epochs (26-34 million years ago).

•Erosion: Erosion began about 500,000 years ago when the Cheyenne river captured streams and rivers flowing from the Black Hills into the Badlands.

Types of Rocks

There are unique cross-sections of different masses of land. Most of the land is made up of sedimentary material that has been washed up from the rocky mountains.

Special Landforms/Features

The Badlands National Park averages 16 inches of rain a year, but sometimes in the badlands there are heavier thunderstorms that can bring much more rain then most of the storms that come through.

The Badlands national park protects 244,000 acres of the white river badlands.
