The holiday focuses on gatherings of families and friends where they remember and pray for their friends and family who have died.

Day of the Dead takes place from October 31, November 1, and November 2.

On Day of the Dead, you build private altars and fill them with gifts.

The alters are filled with favorite objects of the person who died.

The gifts are to encourage visits by the souls, so that the souls hear the prayers of the people who prayed for them.
