Nick --
The events that have taken place in Ferguson and the St. Louis region
since last August have changed our world forever. Fifty years after Selma
and the passage of the Civil Rights Act, the actions in Ferguson and other
cities across the country have exposed the open wounds in our
communities.
Race relations have simmered here in Ferguson and this region for years.
Too many city governments fund their municipal budgets with highly
questionable traffic enforcement measures carried out by mostly
white police departments, and backed up by a draconian court
system. Racial profiling of African Americans in the region, oppressive and
unconstitutional police tactics, and municipal courts handing out harsh and
excessive fines have led to solidify the institutional racism experienced in
the community. These findings were indicated in the Department of Justice
Report on the Ferguson Police Department and Ferguson Municipal Court
released earlier this month.
The DOJ Report has already served as a catalyst signaling to the old
establishment in Ferguson that things must change. We have seen a
series of resignations including the City Manager and the Police Chief. A
broad multi-racial coalition calling for change has been registering new
voters for more than six months, but we need to make sure we get them to

the polls on Election Day.

Now the moment of accountability is upon us. The April 7th elections are
just days away. This date marks another opportunity for real change in
Ferguson and will operate as a signal throughout the region that Black lives
matter to all of us. In that spirit, our coalition is supporting three strong
candidates for the Ferguson City Council.
In the 1st Ward, our candidate is Ella Jones, a 36-year Ferguson
resident who comes from a strong union family and will bring an
independent voice to the council. She has 3 opponents which means every
vote will count in her race.
In the 2nd Ward, we are supporting Bob Hudgins, a protest leader and
former journalist who is making transparency in government and
accountability his platform. Bob's opponent is current Ferguson Mayor,
James Knowles predecessor, who, during his tenure as Mayor, hired both
the City Manager that recently resigned and signed off on the widely
discredited Police Chief.
In the 3rd Ward, we are enthusiastically backing Lee Smith, a retired
union electrician and the first African American President and Business
Agent for a local IBEW union in the Midwest. Lee is also a widower who
has raised ten children in Ferguson and is committed to rebuilding trust in
local government. Lees opponent is a lawyer, as well as a prosecutor in
one municipality, while serving as a judge in a neighboring municipality.
This is exactly the circle of influence that needs to be stopped in the
municipal courts locally and throughout the region.

All three of our candidates have been working hard, making phone calls
and knocking on the doors of Ferguson residents in their wards to meet
them, listen to their concerns, and talk about how they want to improve their
city. Lets bring home a victory for the residents of Ferguson by
electing the candidates who will address the issues and begin to
move our city in a better direction.
Sincerely,
