Subjuntivo (WEIRDO)

1. C. 5 enfoca: Will/Wish + Ojalá

Esperar que + subjuntivo = to hope (that) Querer (ie) que + subj.= to want . . . To Ojalá que + subj.= hopefully . . .

Subjuntivo

Three parts of a subjunctive sentence:

1. One subject in the main/independent clause and a different subject in the noun/dependent clause.

Yo quiero que tú limpies el baño. Ella quiere que yo haga la tarea. Yo quiero que los profesores no den tarea.

2. A Relative Pronoun (que, quien, como) This pronoun links the two clauses and

translates to mean “that.”

Espero que viva Quito. Quiero que Juan me ayude. Ojalá que estés bien.

3. Two verbs: One WEIRDO and one subjunctive

Yo quiero que tú limpies el baño.– I want you to clean the bathroom.

Yo espero que la guerra termine pronto.– I hope that the war ends soon.

¡Cuidado!

Normally, we take off the last two letters to find the root.

• Example: Hablar --> Root = Habl-

• Example: Salir --> Root = Sal-

• Example: Hablar --> Hablo--> Root = Habl-

• In this case, the root is the same.

• Example: Salir --> Salgo --> Root = Salg-

• In this case, the root is different.

The process of conjugating subjunctive1. First, find the YO form in the present tense.

2. Then, take off the -o. You now have your root.

3. Finally, add these endings.

Tener esfuerzo = to have success

1. Ojalá + los Cubs
