CAKEWALK
Tremendous. Fantastic. Fabulous. In an age
of easy superlatives, words tend to lose
their meaning. Which makes describing the
rare something worthy of such extravagant
language somewhat difficult.
Take Cakewalk. At 85.6 meters and 2998 tons,
she is simply the largest yacht ever built in
America. She is also, in the opinion of the
experts who’ve seen her, the first U.S. built
yacht to meet, and in many cases, exceed the
standards of the very best European builders.
Cakewalk. Perfectly capable of speaking
for herself.

The TeamTHE TEAm
Cakewalk’s owner, crew, designers, builder
and myriad others involved in an undertaking
of this magnitude are what make such a
projectasuccess.Thousandsofhoursofeffort,
countless meetings, passionate discussions,
inevitable frustrations (and resulting triumphs)
are all part of, and necessary to, the ultimate
outcome. In the case of Cakewalk, it’s a
process and an outcome that all involved will
never, ever forget.

The BuildTHE BUILd
For derecktor, Cakewalkismorethanajob.
She is an unprecedented challenge and an
unrivalled opportunity. To prove not only that
a U.S. builder can more than hold it’s own with
the world’s best, but to devise and implement
construction methodologies that make that
possible. Processes that not only lead to
more efficient and better results but that help
streamline and integrate design, engineering
andconstructionthroughouttheentireproject.
If indeed necessity is the mother of invention,
Cakewalk has spawned great creativity and
innovation. Every detail, from site security to
quality control to material flow is part of an
encompassingplandirectedbytheproject
management team and executed by all involved
in the build.
mETAL
Even for derecktor, a yard known worldwide
for it’s superlative metal work, Cakewalk
takes, well, the cake. Steel hull, aluminum
superstructure and more custom stainless
than most yards create in a lifetime – it all
upholds not only the yards reputation but the
lofty standards of the yacht herself.
CURVES, CURVES, CURVES
Far from large and linear, Cakewalk contains
more curves than a mountain road. Anyone
who knows metal knows what a challenge
they present to everyone involved. A challenge
handled with sinuous expertise by the people
at derecktor.
nEARInG THE FInISH
When it comes to fairing a yacht prior to
painting, less is less, and the more less the
better. on Cakewalk, with the raw metal
structures extremely fair to begin with, a
minimal amount of fairing is needed. This
saves weight, saves time, and saves money.
CAP IT oFF
Cakewalk’s cap rail is something of a work
of art in itself. Just finding the teak was an
adventure-ourjoinerymanagermadeseveral
trips to the Philippines to locate and select
pieces of Burmese teak large and beautiful
enough to make the grade. Forming, shaping,
fitting and finishing all took the sort of skills
not easily found in today’s world. Fortunately,
they are readily found at derecktor.
UndER THE SURFACE
Beyond her sheer size, behind her
overwhelming grandeur, Cakewalk is a true
technical marvel. miles of cable, piles of pipe
and many tons of machinery all work behind
the scenes to bring her alive and put her in
motion. It’s here, where it can’t be easily seen,
that some of our best work has gone. It’s here
that the effort will show, not in an obvious way,
but in the years ahead as Cakewalk sails the
world.

Tim worked with the firm for over 20 years. After this total immersion in the world of superyacht design, Tim opened his own studio in 1996 with Vanessa Reville, whom he describes as “my partner in all things.” With her support, he has gone ontodesignmanyexceptionalprojects, includingAlmirqab, winner of the 2009 World Superyacht Award for motor Yacht of the Year.
“Seldom have we seen a yard delivering this high quality – it’s even better when realizing it is the first project approaching this size for this yard. Knowing the Owner a long time and having advised him to build at Derecktor, I am really
happy with the results shown.”–Hugo van Wieringen, Azure Naval Architects BV, Chief Naval Architect
A graduate of delft University of Technology in The netherlands, where he earned a master degree in naval Architecture, Hugo maurits van Wieringen began his career in 1985 as a research engineer at ICH Holland, a research institute for the dredging vesselindustry.HejoinedDeVoogtNavalArchitects, providing design and engineering for Feadship, in 1986. In 1993, Hugo became managing director and
owner of de Voogt. After selling the office to Feadship in 2001 and staying on to train his successors, in 2003 he formed Azure naval Architects in Haarlem, TheNetherlands,ajointventurewithco-founderDiederikvanderHoek.NotablerecentAzureprojectsinclude the award-winning 82m oceanco Alfa Nero. “Our communication with Derecktor on the countless details of Cakewalk’s interior design has been excellent as they work with us to translate our drawings to the benefit of the millworking, stone and other trades involved in the construction
process. Cakewalk is a premier achievement for Derecktor’s record and for the U.S. as well as Dalton Designs, Inc.”–Elizabeth Dalton, Dalton Designs, Inc., Interior Designer
A graduate of miami University, oxford, ohio, Liz dalton started her interior design business, dalton designs Inc., in 1985. Early on, she enhanced her skill set with hands-on experience refitting numerous production boats and designing new-construction custom yacht interiors. dalton designs, Inc. has received a number of awards, including ShowBoats International’s “Best Refit,1997” for the 142ft Cakewalk (Feadship) and “Best Full displacement Yacht over 38 meters, 2001” for the 204ft Cakewalk (Feadship), as well as the International Superyacht Award for “Best Power 43 meters and up” in 2000. Liz is a professional member of the American Society of Interior designers (ASId) and is licensed (#1459) in the state of Florida. dalton designs, Inc., is headquartered in a 6,000sq ft custom showroom in north Palm Beach.
“The owner really wanted to build Cakewalk here in the United States because he’s American. We felt that with this team we put together, we could do the project in the U.S. at a yard like Derecktor that knows how to build yachts and knows how to build ships. You have to
have a commercial mentality to build a project this big.”–Captain Bill Zinser, Owner’s Representative, Captain of Cakewalk
Captain Bill Zinser has been boating all of his life. Growing up on the Connecticut shore, Bill’s grandfathers both were involved in the boating industry. His official yachting career began in 1971, as First mate. He became a Captain in 1978, taking the helm of a variety of motor yachts throughout the world, including busy charter vessels. In 1995, Bill supervised the third Cakewalk, a Feadship motor yacht, through a highly successful, award-winning, 18-month refit, then spent two years cruising the Caribbean and mediterranean. Construction of the next award-winning Cakewalk motor yacht began in march 1998 and was completed in the summer of 2000. After her launch, he logged over 100,000 nautical miles in her before her sale in 2004, at which time planning began forthecurrentCAKEWALKproject.
“I am really pleased with the work Derecktor have produced – it is as good as any other yacht builder in the world.”–Tim Heywood, Tim Heywood Designs, Ltd, Principle Designer
Tim Heywood got his start in the yachting industry for pragmatic reasons – after graduating from the Central
“The scope and quality of the Cakewalkprojectputsderecktor Shipyard at the head of the class among the world’s superyacht builders. The collaboration of her experienced owners with renowned designers Tim Heywood and Liz dalton ensures that this build will not only make history, but will be a testament to the exceptional quality that this American yard can offer.”–Rebecca Cahilly, Editor-in-Chief, ShowBoats International
“I visited the Cakewalk ProjectinJuneofthisyear.Iwas extremely impressed by the very apparent quality of build. The attention to detail – from both technical and aesthetic points of view – was very impressive indeed. I believe that Cakewalk will surprise many people when she is delivered – especially the north Europeanyachtbuilders!”–Jonathan Beckett, Chief Executive, Burgess
“A walk through the yacht, still a few months away from completion at the time of our visit, is a surprising experience. First, there is the sheer scale.... The other surprise is how pristine the whole work area is. miles of cables, in bundles as big around as a fist, are tidily secured behind bulkheads and into the ceiling. The veneer that is already in place is invisible behind layers of protection that tightly embrace the planes and
curves of the interior bulkheads. There is hardly any dust, nor debris or pungent smells. not one corner of the multiple blue-line plans tacked on the walls is out of place.”–Cecile Gauert, Editor-in-Chief, Yachts International
“It was quite clear the management of both the shipyard and owner’s team are in sync and running a very efficient program. Fit and finish are comparable and in some cases exceed northern European yacht-building quality. With nearly all of the trades being in house, employees’ attention to detail is of the highest standard. derecktor Shipyards is exceeding expectations. The Cakewalkprojectwillbesuretoraise global awareness of derecktor’s ability to build yachts in excess of 50 meters. We look forward to the final outcome.”–Josh Gulbranson, Sales Broker, Fraser Yachts
“When I went to derecktor Connecticut to preview Cakewalk, I expected to find the sheer volume of the vessel to be impressive. But what impressed me mostwasthedetailoftheprojectmanagementbytheshipyard. Everywhere we went on board, it was very well organized and very clean. They had the process down to a system, and that’s critical. I was also impressed by the level of fit and finish. I am very comfortable in saying that I anticipate Cakewalk will be a spectacular addition to the world yacht fleet and a source of great pride for derecktor Shipyards and U.S. yacht building.”–Curtis Stokes, President, Curtis Stokes & Associates
“I inspected Cakewalk this summer in Bridgeport at the derecktor facility. I have long considered derecktor Shipyards to be one of the most innovative yacht builders in the United States. They have a well established reputation for doing things ‘the smart way’. I was very glad to see that they have been able to apply this legendary ingenuity to a state-of-the-art mega-motoryacht such as Cakewalk, which will undoubtedly be one of the finest vessels afloat when she is launched. The quality of the construction is as apparentineverynookandcranny, notjustonthefinished surfaces.”–Dirk Johnson, Yacht Broker, Merle Wood and Associates
