• There are 24 time zones around the world

• Beginning with 0o longitude, they are centered on meridians which are 15o apart

• Each zone is 1 hour earlier or later than the zones on either side of it

1 time zone = 15o = 1 hour

•The time gets later as you travel East from the Prime Meridian

• For convenience the calendar day changes at 180o which is called the International Date Line

• This location was chosen because it is the furthest point from the Prime Meridian
