Did You Know?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, research has
shown that strengthening exercises are safe and effective for men and
women of all ages, including seniors. The CDC also notes that men and
women with heart disease or arthritis may benefit the most from exercise
regimens that include lifting weights several times per week. A strength-
training program at Tufts University enlisted older men and women with
moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis. The program lasted 16 weeks, and
by the end of those 16 weeks, participants reported that their pain had
decreased by an average of 43 percent while also decreasing the disability
caused by their conditions. In addition to the benefits uncovered in the
Tufts program, strength training can benefit older men and women by
improving balance and flexibility, which can decrease their likelihood of
falling and the severity of those falls if they do slip.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is Prostate to Blame for Sluggish Bladder? DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion on enlarged prostate. My primary-care doctor sent me for a blood test and said my PSA number was too high, then sent me to a urologist. He said my bladder is not emptying and that I am having urine retention in the bladder. After one week of medication (Rapaflo), I had a catheter inserted for another week. He measured the urine in the bladder, and it was 880 ml. Now he is suggesting surgery. Is he going too fast? What are your thoughts on the procedure and side effects? Will this correct the problem? -- D.G.
ANSWER: The bladder is drained via a tube called the urethra, and in men, the urethra runs right through the middle of the prostate. As men get older, the prostate commonly enlarges, and this can cause resistance to flow. The symptoms can range from mildly annoying to complete obstruction. Complete obstruction is an emergency, since the kidneys will fail within a few days of being unable to drain urine at all.
But the obstruction does not need to be complete in order to cause kidney damage. It’s the high pressure in the urethra, bladder and ureters (the tubes that allow urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder) that causes kidney damage. Placing a catheter allows the urine to drain at low pressure if the problem is in the urethra.
Normal bladder capacity is between 300-400 ml. At 880 ml, you would experience very abnormal bladder drainage and would be at high risk for ongoing kidney damage. Thus, I completely agree with your urologist that something, probably surgical, needs to be done quickly.
It’s not completely clear to me whether your inability to drain the bladder is due to obstruction from enlarged prostate, even though an elevated PSA suggests that this might be the case. It also is possible that there is something wrong with the nerves that go to or from the bladder. I suspect your urologist has done additional bladder tests to help sort this out.
The booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement as well as cancer. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have weaned off Zoloft, and I noticed a swelling of my fingers -- I can’t get my rings on. Do you think it is related? -- E.P.
ANSWER: Discontinuing an antidepressant such as sertraline (Zoloft) certainly can cause symptoms. Dizziness, fatigue, muscle aches, anxiety and irritability are common. It happens more frequently if the drug is suddenly stopped versus tapered down over weeks. Paroxitine (Paxil) seems to have the highest incidence of symptoms on stopping.
However, I haven’t seen swelling as a result of stopping sertraline. It may be related, but I doubt it. Is it possible that you are consuming more salt? That’s the most common reason for increased fluid in the fingers over a short time.
I would see your doctor if it doesn’t go away in a week or so.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Hello, my name is GELATO ,
like the ice cream. I am 1 1 ⁄ 2 years old and love everybody. My Mommy takes me out in my stroller in the summer and all the neighbors come out to see me. Some people think I am a stuffed animal and I am very cuddly. I am a Cavapoochon which is a King Charles Cavalier, Poodle and Bichon. If my Mommy sneezes, I jump on her lap and give her a kiss... that’s my way of saying, “God Bless You.”

On February 16, a snowstorm made roads icy and difficult to travel. On my way back home from a doctor’s appointment, I was unable to stop my car at the railroad crossing and slid into a snowdrift. My car was very close to the crossing gate. When the gates came down, they hit my car and went back up. I could not move the car forward or back. The Corfu Police responded when I called 911. Friends and neighbors on Snipery Road came to help. Within an hour, my car was pushed out of the snow and I was safe at home.
Thank you to everyone who came to help, especially my neighbor Adam who was the first to come to my aid and my daughter Rachel who tried her best to shovel me out.

Home Ownership - Ken Johnson, a professor of real estate at Florida International University, said he doubts that home ownership will fall much further below current levels. Johnson thinks the market has already hit bottom and home prices should start appreciating, albeit slowly, this year. In addition, with such favorable interest rates and good deals on homes, it’s hard for potential buyers to resist taking advantage of the opportunity for too much longer.

Kick Start Spring With A Finished Basement
An unfinished basement is a source of energy loss in many
homes. By simply finishing the space with wall and floor
coverings, you will notice a difference on your energy bills. A
remodeled basement offers more than additional storage and
living space. It can provide room for a growing family or a
space where you can retreat for some privacy.
Insulation is a key component in making your basement look
and feel comfortable, inviting and dry. For the best results,
install a rigid board insulation against the concrete foundation
before you stud the wall. The board is mechanically fastened
or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, preventing thermal
bridging through the studs, offering a higher R-value and
better thermal performance.

Gardening pointers
for novices
People have many reasons for
growing gardens, and some of
the most popular gardens are
plots designated for cultivating
herbs and vegetables. Fresh
produce at the ready is a great
benefit of having a home garden,
which also allows homeowners
to exercise full control over
which products to use to grow
robust, healthy vegetables.
Novice gardeners may not know
where to begin when it comes
to planting their first vegetable
gardens, and such gardeners can
benefit by starting small. You may
want to begin by growing plants
in containers so they are more
manageable and can be moved
as you discover which areas of
your property provide the best
growing conditions.
Begin with one or two types of
vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers
and certain squashes are popular
starter plants, as they are relatively
hardy. Select only a few plants so
you are not overwhelmed with the
level of care required to maintain
your garden.
Some gardeners prefer to start
plants from seeds, but this will
require more time and a greater
commitment with regard to
maintenance and planting. When
just starting out, experiment with
small plants that are established
and already have a good root
system.
Consult with your local gardening
center for more suggestions, such
as which soil amendments to
use. Plants may require a certain
soil pH that can be adjusted for
optimal plant growth.

Eating right can improve quality of life
Legend states that on April 2, 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León was the first European to discover modern-day Florida when he traveled on a quest for the mythical “Fountain of Youth.” While modern science has proven that there is no mystical fountain or body of water that can reverse or slow down the aging process, there are many steps people can take to age well and prolong their lives.
Eating the right foods is one way to age well. According to Ralph Felder, M.D., Ph.D., coauthor of “The Bonus Years Diet,” reversing the aging process internally is more difficult than outward cosmetic changes. But the right foods can go a long way toward increasing both life expectancy and quality of life. Those who want to employ diet to increase their life expectancy may want to start adding more of the following foods to their breakfast, lunch and dinner plates.
· Broccoli, grapes and salad: According to Health magazine, researchers have found that compounds in these three foods boast extra life-extending benefits.
· Berries: In addition to their abundance of antioxidants, berries have other benefits. A 2012 study from Harvard University found that at least one serving of blueberries or two servings of strawberries each week may reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults.
· Fruits and vegetables: Produce is good for the body because it’s low in calories and high in fiber, vitamins and other nutrients. Numerous studies have indicated that diets plentiful in fruits and vegetables help people maintain a
healthy weight and protect against cardiovascular disease.
· Whole grains: Whole grains pack a lot of nutrition into a low-calorie food. Whole grains help protect against type 2 diabetes, and researchers at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center found study participants whose diets included plenty of whole grains and fruit cut their heart disease risk by almost half compared to those whose diets favored meat and fatty foods.
· Red wine: A glass a day for women and no more than two glasses daily for men can be beneficial. Moderate consumption of red wine has been shown to slow age-related declines in cardiovascular function, according to the American Heart Association.
· Fiber: Increase your fiber intake for a longer life. Research from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that the more fiber you include in your diet, the lower your risk of coronary heart disease. The daily recommendation is 25 to 35 grams.
While there may be no such thing as the fountain of youth, a healthy diet can help men and women prolong their lives.
Berries and whole grains are nutritious foods that can help men and women live longer, healthier lives.

the big snow storm (2-15-
16) they showed how
wonderful people are in
(local town) helping each
other out. Where were
people like that in my
neighborhood in (local
town)? Nowhere to be
found! My neighbor and I
are disabled and as our
neighbors helped each
other dig out, they left us
snowed in. No emergency
personnel could have
made it to our house if we
needed help. So where
were these fine, good
Samaritans????
Please, if you see a tow
truck, police car, fire
truck, ambulance, or
highway truck with its
lights flashing, MOVE
OVER or slow down. Give
us room to work on the
highway. There are too
many close calls. Every six
days a Tow truck operator
is hit or even killed, due to
motorists not moving over
or slowing down. We are
begging you - PLEASE GIVE
US ROOM TO WORK. We
don’t speed past your
office, so don’t speed past
ours. We have family, too,
that we would like to go
home to. (Editor’s note,
It’s the law)
Just think before you go
vote on Election Day. If
you’re going to vote for
free education (higher
taxes) remember this
country has had “free
education” for many years
it’s called the GI bill.
Remember everything has a
price including FREEDOM.
GOD BLESS AMERICA.
few. They are always
professional, courteous,
prompt, and attentive to
the needs of others. They
give back to the community
in so many ways. They give
a sense of security to those
who have to call 911 in the
night for help, knowing
that they will be at your
home in a very short time,
assisting you during some
medical crisis. Thank you
all!
The Italian Red Head and

I would like to give a
HUGE thank you to the
guy in the tow truck who
saw me stuck on Bright/
Hen TL road during that
snow storm on Tuesday and
stopped to pull out my
tractor trailer! Also, to all
the police, ambulance, fire
department, tow companies
and state/local plow
companies who took the
time to help everyone that
day. THANK YOU!
I want to thank Kirstin
Flass and the staff at the
Rush Library for all they do
to make the library such an
inviting place. The
fireplace, sitting area,
artwork and whimsical
“Yarnstorming” pieces are
just a few examples.

A POINT OF DEPARTURE Many people are reluctant to broach the subject of wills and
funeral arrangements with their families. While everyone realizes that death is inevitable and estates must be settled, few want to have conversations about such stark realities. After all, how does one bring up such matters in conversation? Please allow us to suggest a way. Just as a lawyer can outline all the aspects that need to be addressed when drawing up a will, a funeral director can provide a preplanning guide that can serve as a starting point for end-of-life discussions. Using this as a guide, families can at least get a handle on the important matters that death introduces. These issues are best discussed sooner rather than later.
Preplanning final arrangements is important since it ensures that those left behind will not be burdened with making those difficult decisions during their time of loss. It also allows individuals to predetermine individualized aspects of their commemoration. To arrange an initial, confidential consultation, call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME today at (585) 346-5401 . You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY .
QUOTE: “The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living.” - Marcus Tulius Cicero
Throughout life people w ill make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal w ith the things they do, cause hate in your heart w ill consume you too. - W ill Smith
General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
