Meet the New CAPA President ~ Jacque Nei l ~
Thank you, I think for electing me president of CAPA. What a responsibility. I hope I can serve you well. I was asked for a brief background, so here goes. I was introduced to porcelain art by my stepmother Joy Ewalt. As a child it was busy work to keep me out of her hair when I visited their home in Kettleman City. She loved the art and wanted to share that love. In 1995 I painted my first real piece but was working full time as an RN in San Diego and needed more incentive. That came in the form of Nancy Benedetti. Joy had taken me to a CAPA show and it seemed like everyone around me was aged and very conservative. Nancy bounced across the room and she shared her love of porcelain art, as well. I fell in love then and there with porcelain art. My eyes opened and I saw all the beauty, struggle, learning that was going on. I retired in 1999 and by the next year was taking lessons and attending as many seminars as possible. I am at present a proud student of Nancy Benedetti and a member of the Fresno Porcelain Artists. The world of porcelain art is still opening for me. There is always something new to be learned.
Thanks for joining me on this journey!
Past President’s Message ~ Shirley Dumas ~
CONGRATULATIONS to Jacque Neil, CAPA President 2017-‐2018 and the elected members of the slate! We had a great board, election & installation meeting in Solvang April 8, 2017. I was so pleased with the CAPA member turnout. Fun meeting! And, then, what better place to shop than Solvang. A big thank you to my board for all your help. One note! CAPA is in need of a President Elect for 2019. With each of the clubs pitching in, it will not be a difficult job.
I want to especially thank our new web masters Jean Unger, Arnie Unger and Betty Castro for all the time they have put into getting our web site up and running: www.capachina.com. Send Jean an e-‐mail at jean97@aol.com to give her your club’s monthly newsletter and other information you want to appear on the web site.
We now look forward to Jacque’s leadership and the 2018 Convention. My wish is for members to start painting beautiful auction items and making plans to attend the 2018 Convention in Fresno.
Again, thank you to my board for all your help this past year. It was a great feeling to turn the gavel over to Jacque. Now time for me to paint and play with my Birman kitties.

Camellia City has been very busy so far this year going to seminars. We had seminars with Cherry Eggs, painting yellow roses with new techniques in December; painted a portrait of choice with Cookie Barton in February and a wolf with Sabrina Pedron in March. The results of these seminars are beautiful.
We have been planning our October tea. We display painted porcelain from all of our members, have painted items for sale and of course we serve tea and coffee in painted tea sets.
At the present time are working on getting our entries ready for the state fair.
Our new officers for 2017 – 2018 are:
President Yvonne Von Bronchitis
1st Vice president Consuelo Vargas

Fresno Porcelain Artists Club Jeanette Byl, reporter
Our April Spring Luncheon was held at Golden Chinese Restaurant where we had a wonderful 6-‐course meal. Carole Love-‐Forbes made the arrangements with the restaurant and Renay Weis made the table decorations, We each had a nice piece of china from her dear mother’s collection placed at our seat as a gift. Deborah Hughes is our Honored Artist for 2017 and had a lovely display; she is an asset to our club, as so many of our members are. an An auction of three painted porcelain items was featured. provided by Jennie Graham a beautiful basket with china, Jeanette Byl a lovely Rose plate painted by Sonie Ames, and Renee Weis a beautiful piece from her mothers collection. Celee Evans provided a demonstration on Shadows behind your main flower, she is so good at seeing where the shadows should be to really make and enhance the piece she is painting. Celee also brought some items for us to purchase, and that is always welcome as we are not having a show this year.
Our dear Patti Duncan, age 87, went to be with the Lord on April 19, 2017 after a severe stroke. She was a valuable member of Fresno Porcelain Artists Club and was thrilled to be named our Honored Artist in 2013. Patti served the club for 29 years in many areas, but one was her particular forte’. She was our chairperson for Fresno Fair for many years and always set up the display cases in Home Arts Building beautifully in order to present our art at its very best to the public. The scheduling for the Fair was not an easy task, but Patti always did it well. After deciding it was time to step down from this responsibility, she still assisted Anne Fleming and Deborah Hughes for a few years while they “learned the ropes.” Compassionate and understanding, Patti was always ready to lend a helping hand, and she was a good listener when you needed a shoulder to cry on. Loved by all, she will be missed, and her death leaves a hole in our hearts.

Greetings from Napa with all the rain and winter that just keeps on coming. Usually, by now we have many more days of “Spring” to enjoy. February was the last meeting for Sharon Keating, as our secretary. She has moved to their home in Pacifica and because of the distance, she had to resign from that role. We will miss her and the integral part she has played, all these years, in the club. We hope Sharon will visit when she can and agree to come do a seminar occasionally. The fish seminar with Marna Parks is still in the works. Details will be given at the March meeting. Ellen Olson brought a beautiful demonstration with double violets. As a result of so much interest, plans were discussed to have Ellen return for a seminar. Lynn will be following up to see if it’s doable. Guests at the March meeting were Margaret Olivieri, Donna Van Wagenen and Diana Holdredge (demonstrator this month). Arrangements were finalized for the fish seminar (paint in) with Marna. It was held at her home and since each of the painters ended up doing a different design, we kept Marna on her toes, making the rounds helping all of us individually. Luckily we were a small group. Marna agreed to fill the vacated secretary position for this next year. All the club officers were willing to remain in their same position for another year.
Diana Holdredge’s demonstration was impressive and informative. She shared so much from her time in Germany and gave each of us a handout with a few of her patterns. So appreciated! Best wishes to the other clubs, Mona

Sadness befell our members once again with the passing of our original and beloved long-‐time member Thelma Hopkins on February 21 of this year. She was born in Canada and lived in California, Texas, Kansas, Saudi Arabia and Nevada during her lifetime and for the last 30 years was mostly in the Carson City area. Thelma was a nurse by profession and spent her career working in hospitals and taking care of private patients. In her spare time she was an excellent oil painter and porcelain painter. Our club considered her one of its most talented artists and also one of our most active. I vividly remember her helping with our fund-‐raising garage sale when she was about 92 years old and we were outside in 102 degrees heat for two days. She never turned down working the various club offices during her membership years. This friend was generous and kind to everyone she met and we all miss her!!
Following the Christmas holidays business went on as usual during our meetings. Jean Unger gives kudos to Linda Hartshorn and Betty Castro for taking time to help her and her tech-‐oriented husband Arnie with once again getting our web site switched up and running. It is www.capachina.com We discussed the future of our very small club and are looking forward to our May seminar with Nancy Benedetti.
Now-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐on to my painting! It is the one easy thing I can do since breaking my foot. I now know I definitely am NOT 21 any more and certainly can NOT "leap tall buildings in a single bound"!!! May you all be safe and aware of your failings and not have to learn the hard way!

Peninsula China Painters Carlene Scheidtmann, reporter
On January 12th we participated in the “Creative Fair” organized by the senior groups of San Francisco State University.
Participants were invited to display their artwork, read stories they had written, sing, or play musical instruments. Each person was given 5 minutes to talk about their entry.
Our table of porcelain art represented a variety of styles painted by each of our three (3) Peninsula/CAPA members. Our display was well received, and generated much interest.
Even “Emperor Norton” ( a living symbol of San Francisco hospitality, since the 1800’s) attended the event in full regalia!
We have already received an invitation to return next year, and look forward to sharing our art!

Santa Clara Valley Porcelain Artists Linda Hartshorn, reporter
The winter rains this year slowed us down a little. There were trees down, flooding and landslides this year. We are glad to see the sun shining again.
Santa Clara Porcelain Artists (SCVPA) has been active in learning and ideas for this year. The picture to the right is from the seminar on February 11, 12, 13 & 14th with Jerri Cook-‐Barton painting a portrait of a little girl. Cookie always shows us how to paint beautifully.
We had another seminar on March 23rd thru 27th with Sabrina Pederon from Italy painting a bobcat. We learned a lot from her and hope to have her back. She has a totally different style of painting and gave us lots to think about.
We are planning to display at the Santa Clara County Fair again this year. Mickey Jenkins and Mary Denny are working on getting a display ready for the August fair. For our Christmas fundraiser, we are planning something different this year. Instead of cups, glasses or ornaments, we are going to paint pendants and do a workshop to create beaded chains for our work.
I know these ladies are creative and I hope to share some pictures of their work later this year. Hope all is well with our fellow painters. Happy Spring!!
