Carole Robertson Center for Learning Annual Report 2014
Fiscal Year 2014 was a time of reflection at the Carole Robertson Center for Learning. We looked back at the historical roots of the Center to help lay the foundation for the future of the organization and the children and families that come through our doors. September 15, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama in which four African American girls – Carole Robertson, Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, and Denise McNair – were killed.
Every five years, to commemorate the anniversary of the bombing, the Center holds a Rededication ceremony to honor the memory of the four girls. The 2013 Rededication was held in the beautiful gardens of Saint Ignatius College Prep, and included members of the Robertson family, past and present Carole Robertson Center Board of Directors, staff, and parents, elected officials, and the community at large to rededicate ourselves to the basic tenets of providing children and families on Chicago’s west side a safe haven and the opportunity to develop to their full potential.
For nearly 38 years, the Carole Robertson Center for Learning has had the honor and responsibility of doing work in Carole’s name and in the memory of all four girls. This responsibility is not taken lightly. Over the years, thousands of lives have been changed in Carole’s name, and thousands more lives will be changed in the years to come.
While this year was one of reflection, it was also one of looking to the future, as echoed in the theme of our 2014 Annual Celebration: Painting a Bright Future for Every Child. Looking back gives us the foundation and perspective to imagine the possibilities that
lay ahead of us. Despite funding challenges over the past fiscal year, we persevered and finished the year even stronger. Accomplishments include: NAEYC re-accreditation of our 3701 West Ogden Avenue site for a new five-year term, including meeting higher standards of emerging accreditation criteria; creating a community-based program hub at our 2020 West Roosevelt Road site by bringing together our programs that serve the broader community; the introduction of Home-Based Head Start for hard-to-reach families with preschool age children who cannot access our sites; and successful completion of a Head Start Federal Review implementing all available Head Start and Early Head Start program models (center-based, home-based, full-day, and half-day, and family child care homes for children from birth through age 5).
As always, none of this would be possible without you – our community of supporters. Without your care and concern, your interest in our work, and your financial support and volunteerism, we never would have made it this far. Each year, we are infused with the excitement and energy of our children as a new school year approaches. The momentum of a new program year rejuvenates and refocuses all of us, and reminds us that we do this work for our children and families, as we have since our founding. On behalf of the parents and children who benefit from the programs at the Carole Robertson Center for Learning, we thank you.
Sincerely,
Cerathel Burnett Dave RobertsonChief Executive Officer President, Board of Directors
The Carole Robertson Center for Learning is dedicated to nurturing, supporting, and strengthening family life through quality child, youth, and family development programs. The Center serves Chicago families and facilitates community advocacy on child and family issues.
In FY14, the Carole Robertson Center for Learning served close to 700 children, ages 6 weeks to 16 years, and their families daily out of three sites located on Chicago’s west side. The Center serves primarily the North Lawndale and Little Village communities, some of the most vulnerable families in the City of Chicago. All children served are low-income, with 78% living below federal poverty level. Over 20% of children served were identified with special needs. 47% of children served are African American, and 49% are Latino, many of whom come from families who do not speak English, or speak it as a second language.
