Back in 2000, Cox Communications decided
to deploy a workforce automation solution to
its technicians.
“One of the challenges for Cox Communications
as a company applying workforce automation
was to fi nd a way to make more effi cient and
cost-effective decisions in the fi eld,” states Mike
Kovash, IT Manager for Cox Communications.
Cox met with Panasonic Computer Solutions
Company early on in its process, and ended up
with a partner that helped it deploy a complete
solution. Kovash continues, “Panasonic partnered
with Cox to help look at the ways we use the
mobile devices to optimize that, and to fi nd
other avenues for saving money and helping
make the fi eld experience more productive for
both the technician and the customer.”
Cox Communications found that Panasonic
Toughbook® laptops could be equipped with
other equipment to provide a customized
system. “With Panasonic’s integration, we were
actually able to have a form factor that was
rugged and durable in the fi eld,” says Kovash.
Emmett J. Haas, a network administrator for
Cox Communications, on a service call, provided
further explanation about how the form factor
worked in the fi eld. “The technician pulls out the
fully-rugged Toughbook notebook that we use
and installs the sidekick module, which is the
troubleshooting module that he uses to check
levels, determine the problem, make the
customer happy and get the service back up
where it needs to be.”
Panasonic Toughbook laptops are the industry’s
most rugged and reliable mobile computers.
Their magnesium alloy cases, shock-mounted
hard drives and spill-resistant features ensure
they can stand up to the wear and tear
that comes with working in the fi eld. Cox
Communications chose Panasonic Toughbook
mobile PCs because of their reputation in the
industry. It ended up with a partner that helped
develop a total workforce automation solution
far exceeding the initial productivity goals it had
set for the project.
Panasonic Toughbook notebooks with GPS were deployed to its cable and telephone technicians.

rugged Mobile Computing for a lower total Cost of ownership. In a mobile computing study of the field service industry, leading research
firm VDC concluded the following:• By the third year of life, 80% of commercial-grade notebooks used in the
field require replacement.• Based on a five-year replacement cycle of notebooks deployed, rugged
notebooks are 23% less expensive than commercial-grade units on an
annual basis. When used in harsh environments like those encountered
in field service, rugged notebooks are 56% less expensive than
commercial-grade units on an annual basis.
embedded Wireless.Since 1995, Panasonic Toughbook laptops have been engineered from
the inside out to provide the most robust wireless performance in the
industry. Their embedded OEM modules are isolated from processor noise
and heat interference, and their antennas are integrated next to the LCD
for unblocked transmission. Both the OEM module and the antenna have
been designed into the laptops for protection from drops, bangs and other
challenging environmental conditions. With Toughbook laptops, you can
connect to both local area and wide area networks via wireless data service
from AT&T, Alltel, Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless. These networks
enable you to access the information you need at speeds that allow for
maximum productivity.• Send and receive large images and files• Access your company’s intranet from the field• Obtain critical sales and service information no matter where you are working
• Connect to email and the Internet anytime, anywhere
Toughbook laptops provide access to all current wireless technologies,
including 802.11a/b/g, CDMA, GSM/GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO and HSDPA, and
are backward compatible, ensuring coverage in any area. Toughbook laptops
also can be configured with WAAS-enabled GPS for precise x and y
coordinates, and Bluetooth® technology for connectivity to local printers,
headsets and networks.
