Structure of EmotionsInternational School/Museum of Flamenco by MUS Architects Proposal

MUS Architects: Structure of Emotions

One of the top 10 winning proposals for the design competition of the International Museum of Flamenco.

Designer: MUS Architects

Location: Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Year: 2011

Concept: International Museum of Flamenco

Movements and gestures of dancers are full of expression and tension. Dancers bring the fascinated viewer into an internal world of experience and emotion through the swinging movement of their body, decorative arrangement of their fingers and smooth vibration of the ornamental frills. Rhythmic and dynamic music transmits the spectator into a world of incredible aesthetic feelings awakening all senses and inflaming the imagination…

Concept of “Flamenco” is also applied to the overall mass of the building:High in areas and low in others, forming a curve that responds to musical waves.

Architectural Drawings

What’s good about the building

Use of light/shade as a part of the design

Rough material with natural color for canopy: sculpture

Building is integrated with the surrounding: separation between interior and exterior is only glass. Upper plaza is accessed by ramps located outside.

Unique structure to achieve the swirling affect

Might have a complicated exterior, but the overall mass is a simple modified extruded form.

Arguments

The folded layers were designed to resemble the swirling train of the Flamenco skirt.

Some people see it differently.
