What is Cancer?
It’s a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread
of abnormal cell.*Pg 366-367 from textbook

How does Cancer Start and Spread?
• It’s called Metastasizing – Normal cells reproduce themselves in an orderly way, but when the nuclei
lose their ability to regulate and control cell growth cell division is disrupted and mutant cells can develop. Some cells keep on growing resulting in tumors, either benign or malignant.
– Normally the DNA in the nucleus works to repair and replace the bad cells, but defects in the genes (from outside sources like radiation, chemicals, and viruses) allow the cell to grow into a tumor.
– Once the abnormal cell has multiplied to about a million cancer cells, the tumor may go undetected for a significant period of time, not harming the human body for quite some time.
– Once the tumor receives oxygen and nutrients from the blood vessels that formed into the tumor, the cancer cells can now break away and migrate to other parts of the body, where they can cause new cancer throughout the body.

How can You Prevent it????
STOP USING TOBACCO!
Smokers are six times more likely than nonsmokers to develop these cancers. Smokeless tobacco ("snuff" or
chewing tobacco) is associated with cancers of the cheek, gums and inner surface of the lips. Smokeless
tobacco increases the risk of these cancers by about 50 times.

Drink alcohol only in moderation, it at all!
Chronic excessive alcohol use can irritate the cells in your mouth, making them vulnerable to mouth cancer. If you choose to drink alcohol, limit yourself to one drink a day if you're a woman or two drinks a day if you're a man.
