Cashew Market Commentaries from Experts
Cashew Market Report – India
Cashew kernel price for various grades in the domestic markets remain steady at last week levels. The
same is the case with Tuticorin FOB market.
Almond Kernel California traded at Delhi market continue to remain weak and was traded at INR 587.5
per kg.
Kindly, ignore the Indian Exim data for the month of August-2016 published in the previous issue of
cashew week, due to discrepancies in the data. We will update the same at the earliest and sorry for
the inconvenience caused to the readers.
Vietnam
Vietnam raw cashew imports in the first eight months of 2016 totalled 708,032 tonnes as against
707,341 tonnes imported during the same period in 2015.
Imports in August-2016 totalled 136,774 tonnes as against 134,260 tonnes imported in August-2015.
Vietnam’s cashew kernel exports in Aug-2016 totalled 35,986 tonnes as against 30,015 tonnes
exported in August-2015. Overall cashew kernel exports in the first eight months of 2016 totalled
227,592 tonnes as against 217,054 tonnes exported during the same period in 2015.
Vietnam FOB price for various grades remain at last week levels.
Currency
Indian rupee as we rightly mentioned depreciated further towards 67 levels during last week after
rumours about its devaluation, which was promptly rejected by the finance ministry. As long as 66 are
not violated expect rupee to depreciate gradually in the coming weeks.
Brazilian Real as we rightly pointed out came under pressure after having touched 3.35 and above
during last week. However, the overall future trend is still not clear.

RCN Market Commentaries
The raw cashew market is very firm owing to non availability of quality cargo. The Indonesian bush
prices have been pushed to unreasonable levels. The quality is also lower when compared to last year.
It was reported that Vietnam has bought some quantities at USD 2350/mt cnf for 54lb quality. The
problem now is that the bush prices are so high that even 2350 are not workable, although 54lb
quality is very rare to find.

There are reports, that Tanzania government will eliminate direct buying from farmers by few
exporters. The trade is of the view that this will result in a level playing field. There are reports that
the auction process will start during first week of October.
Overall, the current RCN market is making processing unviable unless kernel market jumps up. This
has created a highly dangerous and uncertain environment for all the stakeholders.

CNSL Market Commentaries
Cashew shell price has come down further to INR 5.10 per kg. Cake is steady at INR 3.60 per kg. CNSL
is also down at INR 17per kg. With little buying interest, CNSL price may remain subdued in the next
couple of weeks or so.

International Commentaries
No sign of downtrend from the market during the week; however, steady demand had kept the prices
stable. W240 traded at USD 4.60/4.68, W320 at USD 4.28/4.30 per lb fob for Oct shipment, to be sold
by the medium packers. US continued to be the leading buying destination. Most of interested grades
were whole grades while broken demand is weak. Prices offered by top and reliable packers were
some cents per lb higher compared to medium ones. W240 offered at USD 4.70/4.75, W320 at USD
4.40/4.45, W450 at USD 4.15/4.20 per lb fob for Oct- Dec shipments.
Packers are excited due to higher prices traded recently and most of them are offering for prompt or
nearby shipments rather than forwards. The same is the case with buyers, as no one knows exactly
what the prices are going to be in the near future. Thanks to the buoyancy of kernels prices, the
imported RND prices were also traded firm, but many buyers are not happy at current offerings. They
are very much reluctant to confirm the deals at the prevailing higher prices. Although kernel prices
moved higher substantially in recent months and are close to historic highs, no one is sure whether
the current trend will continue or not. Indonesian RCN offered at higher levels in excess of USD
2100/2200 per tonne.
Buying interests from China was weak and trade to this origin is limited. China will surely buy more
goods in the coming time for its lunar New Year event, but not in the near future.

Raw cashewnut auctions in Tanzania are yet to start. Mtwara region cooperative societies are
beginning to collect raw cashewnuts from farmers this week (20th September 2016), especially from
Masasi District. According to the preparations done by MAMCU Ltd (Cooperative Union for Masasi,
Mtwara and Nanyumbu districts), the first auction for Mtwara region will take place by the end of this
week. On the other hand, Lindi Region had already fixed the date for first auction, which is of 1st
October 2016. Many buyers are still coming to Cashewnut Board of Tanzania (CBT) for registration

cashewnut buying license to 17 companies, out of these 99% were for export.

After the Vietnam National Day(02 September), the market price in Vietnam rises up very quickly,
without any signs. The most popular grades such as WW240, WW320 and WW450 rise around
50cent/kg. WW240 moved from 9.60 USD/kg to 10.0-10.1 USD/kg, WW320 from 9.40 USD/kg up to
9.80-9.90 USD/kg, WW450 from 9.10 USD/kg up to 9.30-9.40 USD/kg. The processors in Long an
inform our Chinese buyers that due to the high price of RCN and future contracts from the others
market, they have to hike the prices. It seems they don’t worry about the demand from China at all.
Now no one dare to predict how high the price will be. We just contine to order in small quantities and
keep low stock. We still can not accept the new price of this week, maybe next week some buyers may
ran out of stocks are likley to sign new contracts.

Cashew kernel price for FOB W320 continued to remain firm in the region of USD 4.45-4.50/lb, the
highest since the beginning of this year. Expect prices to remain firm going forward and one can’t rule
out the possibility of W320 hitting the August-2011 historic high of USD 4.60-4.65 cents per lb in the
coming few weeks.

RCN prices are coming down in the domestic markets due to deteriorating quality as well as scarcity of
the produce as the season is almost over. However, higher imported produce resulted in slight
increase in RCN price in Vetapalem region.
Guinea Bissau – The Rising Cashew Powerhouse
Mr Josue Gomes de Almeida, World Bank Project Coordinator and
Ministry of Economy and Finance Advisor, Guinea Bissau
Guinea-Bissau is a beautiful country steeped in rich history and untouched natural wonders. It is
located on the western coast of Africa, with the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Senegal to the north and
Guinea-Conakry to the east and south. Guinea Bissau is honoured to
be the host of African Cashew Alliance ‘10th World Cashew Festival
& Expo’ from 19-22, September 2016 in Bissau. The event will be
held at Laico groups’ Ledger Hotel, an ideal location for ACA annual
conference, given that they are the second largest producer of
cashew nut on the continent of Africa. The country has much to
offer, from its growing industry, to its beautiful beaches, to its rich
culture, that will make this 10th anniversary of the ACA World
Cashew Festival & Expo one of our most exciting conferences in
history.
Cashews are to Guinea-Bissau what petroleum is to Saudi Arabia,
virtually its sole source of export earnings, a commodity without which the country would be
condemned to poverty significantly deeper than what is at present. The Government and the
|6|
Volume 17 | Issue 38 |Sep 11 - 17, 2016 CASHEW WEEK CASHEW WEEK CASHEW WEEK CASHEW WEEK A WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
population are extremely dependent on it as a source of revenue. Cashew nuts represent more than
90% of the country’s exports, which is over 60% of state GDP and about 17% of state revenues.
Cashew trees naturally grow in Guinea-Bissau and fill the country’s landscape, making Guinea-Bissau,
the fourth largest producer in the world and second largest producer in Africa. The raw nuts quality
from Guinea-Bissau is second to none in the world.
Following a long period of uncertainty and political instability for Guinea Bissau, over the past decade,
the country has finally inverted this tendency and is now in the path of becoming a destination for
investments in cashew and tourism sector. After the legislative and presidential elections of 2014 the
country has been rapidly growing, both in terms of economic growth and public finance management
that is applauded by the Bretton Woods organizations and the international community in general.
It is also important to note that for the first time in the country’s history, an institutional political crisis
was resolved, through the institutional judicial bodies without recourse to the defense and security
forces as in the past, thus demonstrating a clear separation of powers and a conduct of a true rule of
law. This has been enabled the normal functioning of the country, allowing many private forum
activities to continue normally and smoothly.
Government’s renewed commitment towards attracting investments coupled with a welcoming and
equally hard working population G. Bissau, the country is definitely on the path to becoming a major
global cashew player. The economic growth brought in with Government and our people’s dedicated
efforts has also helped us achieve social peace and stability in the country. With multiple international
organizations such as UN, WHO, World Bank, etc. Setting up their respective offices along with an
array of private players, I’m confident that the country has put the recent phase of unstable political
environment behind it and moving towards growth and development.
At the same time, the country’s irrepressible population does not seem to be affected by these
tumultuous turn of events over the past decade. Extraordinary carnival celebrations still take place, a
vibrant and colorful country completely contrary to what is taking place. ‘As a first time visitor, my
experience in the capital city Bissau exceeded any of my pre-arrival expectations. A buzzing city with
little infrastructure, but resilient people’, says Kari Synnove Johansen, who recently visited Guinea
Bissau to help run a regional workshop for the planning development of the country. ‘It is such a
welcoming country. Despite the military government, there is no hassle. Everybody is very friendly and
just getting along with their lives, they aren't overly fussed about you’, says David Hatter, a first time
visitor too.
Investment opportunity and work aside, Guinea Bissau offers an equally appealing opportunity to visit
its pristine beaches, experience its distinct culture and delicious Portuguese cuisine. With abundance
of beautiful string of beach towns facing the Atlantic ocean that are still very cheap and virgin, one
need not try hard to fall in love with this country.
Therefore, I’d like to conclude by saying that the ACA 10th World cashew festival offers you the
perfect opportunity to network and learn more of the cashew opportunities in West Africa and

Guinea-Bissau in particular along with Perfect Avenue for you to experience this beautiful country and
its culture. I look forward to welcoming you all in Bissau in September.
Almond report- California and New Delhi
Markets in Delhi's Khari Baoli area closed for trading of Californian Almond NP Inshell's at INR 16500-
600/40 kg for 70% Sliding Scale Basis, whereas BD traded at INR 16800-16850/40 kg. FAQ Almond
Kernels were traded at INR 585-590/kg, while Hand Picked at INR 605-615/Kg.
Markets remained volatile throughout last week, with decent demand. Availability of NP Inshell was
less during the entire week, as most of the importers kept away from participating, citing good
demand in the coming days owing to festival season.
Hanjin’s default is causing a major headache with many of the buyers, with no signs of early solution.
The information flows had been slow and less, as importers had no clue about the status. This issue
has spilled over to other shipping lines, resulted in freight rates going up and containers getting
delayed at transhipment ports, due to non availability of space on feeder vessels.
California has increased the prices by over 10 cents per Lbs on all varieties citing good shipment
numbers for August and anticipating good numbers for September shipments as well .This bullish
trend in California has been the much needed silver lining for Indian Market as it has supported any
further fall of prices due to the record shipment of August with 1100 containers.
Cashew prices remain firm to bullish in Delhi with and uneasy calm underlying the prices. Pistachio
prices tend to fall on good harvest in Iran and big crop in US. Walnut Inshell prices from California are
being offered at USD 1.30/lbs for JC with huge crop in hand though Pistachios, Walnut etc will only
reach India after Diwali, thus shifting customers towards Almond Kernels.
The new crop shipments will start arriving in Delhi markets after 25/26 of September. The prices will
have a natural tendency to fall due to higher arrivals. Good Sales are crucial in the next 2-3 weeks or
otherwise we will see huge drop in prices by third week of October.

Indian rupee last week depreciated on rumours of
possible weakening of rupee by Government of India
to aid ailing exports. "The value of rupee is
determined by the market and there is no plan to
change policy," the finance ministry's economic
affairs secretary, Mr Shaktikanta Das, said and
termed the report as false.
Last week data was mixed with IIP (Industrial output)
fell 2.4% in July after a spurt in May and June, much due to a decline in manufacturing output. At the
same time India’s consumer inflation declined to 5.05% in August as against 5.91% in July, mainly
declined due to fall in food prices.
Indian rupee last week traded in the region of
66.80 and 67.09 and finally settled around 66.98
on Friday. Next resistance is seen in the region of
67.13 and 67.41/67.51 and only above to
depreciate further. At the same time support is
seen at around 66.65-66.51. In case breaches
those supports then expect rupee to appreciate
towards 66.30-66.20 levels.

Elaborate about Meyers contributions to the cashew sector
Meyer is located in the Eastern part of China and was established in 1994. From 2012, we are listed
as a stock company; it’s a unique company, which produces colour sorters. We are focusing more on
the new technologies and innovations. Now, we are producing colour sorter, infra- red sorters, X- ray
detectors and laser sorters.
Please explain about the colour sorter and its importance in cashew processing
The colour sorter helps in differentiating the cashew kernels, which are not completely peeled and
also separate splits and broken with that of wholes. Our colour sorter is highly advanced with the
eject system. Not only cashews, we also provide colour sorters for all the cereal crops. It’s been just
a year and we have already sold more than 200 colour sorters throughout the world, out of which
20-30 are sold to the Indian cashew processors, and also too many African countries like Ivory Coast,
Benin and Nigeria.

factory in India?
Cashew cultivation is expanding into new areas in India. Cashew processing too is being taken up in
non-traditional areas. Entrepreneurs face several questions when starting a new project, such as,
which technology to choose, what should be the scale, should we choose manual vs. semi-automatic
vs. fully automatic processing lines and where to set up the plant, what is the demand in my region
and what is the forecast and what are the risks in investing and so on.
The consulting arm of Cashewinfo.com would be happy to assist businesses in conducting Techno-
Economic Feasibility studies for either establishing a new factory or modernizing an existing factory.
Let us know your requirements, we would provide you with best advice. It is wise to talk to us before
