Sikkens Wood Coatings impregnation Our impregnations offer you the greatest level of safety and improve the ‘natural durability’ of all softwoods and leaf woods. In the impregnation of individual parts, increased protection from blue stain and rotting is achieved, particularly in the tongue-and-groove areas.
Sikkens Wood Coatings waterproof primers Thanks to an innovative concept, you can benefit from two advantages at once. Wood protection and priming function are achieved in just one step with our 2-in-1 product.
This means: minimum effort, maximum profit. As up to 50 % of your material costs and 25 % of your processing time can be saved by using our impregnating base coat. The recommended appropriate application amount is 120–160 g/m2 for sapwood.
The wood is specially protected using our phase transfer technology developed in-house with our impregnating base coat as the ingredients are transported especially deeply into the wood. Thus it receives the necessary protection against blue stains and rotting fungi.
Phase transfer technology in Sikkens Wood Coatings impregnating base coats
The phase-transfer additive causes the fungicide to pene-trate from the watery phase (impregnating primer) into the solid phase (wood). There they take effect, all the way deep down into the wood.
Wood as a building material has to be protected against the continuous effect of moisture so that problems don’t crop up. The construction is primarily responsible for this. Should moisture ever penetrate the unit, our impregnations and impregnating primers offer a reli-able protection and therefore prevent blueing and discolouration.

Primers are the connecting link between wood surfaces and coating. Their composition influence decisive characteristics of the coating system such as bonding.
The development of primer requires special dili-gence with respect to the selection of raw materi-al, testing and system compatibility. Thus we use technology on the basis of modern bonding dis-persions in water-thinnable products. The result is characterised by a high penetration capability with deep, permanent anchorage in the woods cell structure.
Varnish primersThe CETOL® WP series is available in a great variation of colour shades. Practically ever natural wood tone can be replicated. Through coordinated combination with top coats (CETOL® WF 950/955 or CETOL® WF 952/957), attractive system colour tones and company-custom collections can be created. Depending on the woods quality, its in-herent colour and surface structure can be inten-sified, leveled or concealed through specific se-lection of colour shade.
High-quality primers for more system security
Pro tip for varnish colour tone
Select a darker shade primer (e.g. Cetol® WP 560 = J085T) then paint over it with a lighter shade (e.g. Cetol® WF 955 = J006T) or choose the same colour shade for both primer and top coats.

Preventing damageFor long-lasting, preventative protection against moisture absorption in V joint areas we urgently recommend elastic sealing with Kodrin WV 472 for transparent and Kodrin WV 470 for opaque systems after the primer. This ensures the durabil-ity of the wooden window for your customer.
Additional cross grain protectionWooden windows are only functional as long as as they have all-round protection. Structural points are particularly susceptible to attack. For example, the corner joints of windows are always exposed to great stresses. This is because the wood’s movement forces work in different directions here and that can rapidly lead to open V joints. An open joint is an invitation for moisture to penetrate into the wood. The consequence: the wood will swell, fungal spores can intrude. Further consequential damage is possible. Our sealant products help here.

Surfaces with 2-coat coverage (mid and top coats) are generally treated with the same product for both coats. But in many cases better results were achieved with a product combination. Sikkens Wood Coatings therefore recommends combined solutions for certain woods which prevent later formation of weak points.
Translucent mid coatsHard woods with large pore structures are often not optimally used in a conventional, sprayed mid coating on pore borders and edges. This means no homogeneous, sealed film can form at these positions with sufficient pore-filling. These critical zones are potential weak spots in later weathering as moisture and UV irradiation is able to pene-trate. A mid coat provides increased system safe-ty in such cases.
Opaque intermediate coatsIn woods rich in ingredients (except for larch), RUBBOL® WM 270 offers good protection against discolourations in combination with an isolating primer. The recommended drying times must be observed and upheld (see technical data sheet).
Mid coat as "system optimisation" for better results

Last, but not least: opaque and translucent top coats with long-term protection
There are the Sikkens Wood Coatings top coats for wooden components of great durability and aesthetics.
The opaque coatings of the RUBBOL® product family give wooden windows and doors a signifi-cantly greater durability. Because opaque coatings are especially robust.
The translucent CETOL® top coats give the natu-ral appearance of the wood a fresh, attractive look and also ensure surface protection.
Improved varnish film properties make the coating less sensitive to mechanical stresses.
Convince your customers with transparent, even surfaces – in different gloss grades and many wood colour shades.

For a world full of colourWe have developed a special varnish in CETOL® WF 771 which maintains the unique wood effect and glistens with brilliant colours. The ranges of use include terraces, facade cladding, greenhous-es and garden furniture, pergolas such as roof structures, boardings and wooden constructions.
Two of our technologies have been successfully implemented here: CETOL® WF 771 re-fills the pores in wood to produce the Saturator-Effekt®, thus improving durability. With its two different layers, the Self-Stratifying® binder ensures good adhesion and protection against UV light and moisture. This is the best to protect and add value for wood and is especially suitable for highly exposed wood surfaces.
Our Never Ending Impressions collection offers you a wide spectrum of intensive colours and har-moniously balanced colour tones. Customers such as McDonald’s® or Walt Disney World® already use this huge range of colours. See page 59 for further information.

Maintenance set for windows
Maintenance milk for windows
Special cleaner for windows and doors
Sikkens Wood Coatings care cloth
Other products Care products
Care set for wooden windowsCleaning and maintenance with the famous Sikkens Wood Coatings care set (made up of a special cleaner and maintenance milk for windows) is essential for preserving value. Be it translucent or opaque – special cleaners and maintenance milk not only protect but also fresh-en up the colours. The windows of your customers will gleam with renewed brilliance. After use of the special cleaner, a treatment of the prepared coat-ing with our maintenance milk is recommended. The maintenance milk should be applied once a year in order to extend maintenance intervals and overall service life.
Care cloth for house doorsBe it painted or varnished house doors – the care cloth brings new lustre and additionally protects
against dirt and weathering influences. A regular application is sensible (once a year) in order to ef-fectively extend the renovation intervals and the life cycle of your high-quality wooden doors.
General care tipsWe recommend regularly cleaning wooden constructions with warm water and a mild deter-gent on the inside and outside as well as in the fold area. It should be ensured that the drainage openings are free so that rainwater can run off unimpeded. Oiling of the fittings with a fitting spray is also important for simple opening and closing as well as the processing of rubber seals with a seal care product for permanent elasticity and good sealing. These applications promise a long-lasting, good service life of windows and doors.

Right protection for wooden windows In order to avoid damages to the frame, sash or glass during installation, cleaning or painting, all surfaces around the window should be carefully protected. The foil and tape used must be free of plasticisers and solvents as well as be UV- and weather-proof (e.g. tesa 4438). Please never leave the wooden elements masked or covered for more than two weeks otherwise moisture could build-up in the wood. All plaster work and painting should be completed within three months of in-stallation.
Maintenance of surface coating The coating of your wooden windows should be maintained in regular intervals. Depending on the installation situation, we recommend a mainte-nance coat for opaque coatings after 4 to 5 years and translucent coatings after 2 to 3 years. You can use eco-friendly, water-borne Sikkens Wood Coatings products for maintenance purposes.
MaintenanceEven with the best products, defects can occur on rare occasions. To ensure these are quickly processed, a few things are to be taken into ac-count: It is important that the recommendations for maintenance and care are upheld and that the surface coating be annually checked for mechani-cal damage. Immediate, professional maintenance of even small damaged areas is urgently neces-sary and, in the event of a dispute, must be prov-en. This means: if small damages are discovered during care of the coating, then these are to be immediately remedied as part of maintenance in order to prevent the damage from progressing and to ensure the protective coating is preserved. The affected areas are always at least processed from V-joint to V-joint in the affected areas. A coating which is no longer sound must be removed and the wood beneath it must be sand-ed down until the greyed areas are no longer visible. A sound old coating only has to be sanded down slightly. On the clean, dry sound substrate, the maintenance coat can take place with the right mounting products in the brushing process.

In non-film-forming systems no measurable coat
Best examples for this are the Ion-Lock and Duraflex-Technology. With Ion-Lock-Technology, Sikkens Wood Coatings has found a way to bind wooden extracts and therefore to considerably re-duce the previously unwanted discolourations of the wood. New standards in the isolating of opaque and translucent wooden window coating systems are being set.
Duraflex-Technology stands for extremely long du-rability of the coating on windows and doors made from wood. The targeted combination of a perma-nently elastic film and a very high-quality UV light protection means influencing factors such as ex-treme cold or high temperatures and the swelling and shrinking of the wood due to moisture to be ideally compensated.
Wood has outstanding physical properties. These include pressure resistance, elasticity and good insulation. To ensure the quality of the wood remains permanently high, the coating is significant. Over the following pages, we would like to give you a few tips and show you opportunities how you can effectively process your wooden parts.
It is our aim to continuously improve products and, furthermore, to realise ideas and devel-opments which optimise the protection of wooden parts even further. New technologies have been developed in our laboratories which meet the highest of requirements and which give dimensionally stable longer lives even under the hardest of conditions.
We introduce our newest technologies and de-scribe the usefulness of permanent wood protec-tion offered to you and your customers. This is the case for both our standard and premium systems.
At the same time, we are entering the world of colours. High-quality, coated wooden parts be-come an attractive stylistic element thanks to our high-class colour program.
See how efficient wooden parts can be in combi-nation with other materials and benefit from our tips for processing and product use. The table to the side gives processing recommendations for dimensionally stable, semi-stable and non-stable wooden parts.

1. Attractive force: Traditional binder structures cannot completely bind the liberated wood extractives within the isolation layer. ILT uses an electro-chemical process to bind the ion groups in the liberated wood extrac-tives within the film, thus preventing a bleeding through to the surface.
2. Fixation: The timber extractives are permanently bound during fixation.

• Long term elasticity particularly needed in case of temperature and moisture fluctuations
• Extreme resistance to impact of weathering
• Very good bonding
• Optimum durability
• Ideal customisation for the wood substrate
• High UV protection through innovative light stabilisers
• Long-lasting effectiveness of UV light stabilisers
• Especially effective moisture protection through the film’s outstanding permeable proper-ties

See our products on pages 29 and 32
A breakthrough in the isolation of wooden extractives has been achieved by Sikkens Wood Coatings with Ion-Lock-Technology (ILT). The patent-registered technology offers protection against bleeding. Visible discolourations of translucent or opaque coated surfaces are significantly reduced.
Duraflex-Technology stands for longevity and outstanding weather protection. With the permanent elasticity of the coating system, an optimum durability is achieved in all weathering conditions. A convincing argument for your customers.
The innovative mid-coats CETOL® WM 675 and CETOL® WM 680 not only reduce discolourations effectively, but they also increase the weather-re-sistance of the entire coating system thanks to good pore wetting and filling. Can be applied on most leaf and pine woods. Due to the heavy met-als not being used use an environmentally friend-ly, sustainable product in CETOL® WM 675 and CETOL® WM 680.
This is how Ion-Lock-Technology works:The contrasts between the mostly negatively (–) charged wood extractives and the positively (+) charged components of the binder are used for the high isolating effect. Dyes are drawn to the ion ends and are thus permanently bound and neutralised within the coating layer (see graphic below). This can reduce or even prevent wooden extractive bleed considerably. This is particularly the case for oak wood.
Thanks to the long term elasticity of the film – par-ticularly needed in the case of temperature fluctua-tions – the product is optimally suited to the wood-en substrate. Innovative light stabilisers (in the translucent coatings) give the coating high and long-lasting protection against against UV radia-tion. The outstanding permeable properties of the

Wood
Heat: The wood releases its moisture and shrinks. The coating follows the movement without material stress.
Rain: The ingressing moisture makes the wood swell. But the flexible coating ex-pands and ensures a con-trolled release of moisture thanks to its special diffu-sion characteristics.
Hail: Better impact strength reduces cracking.
Extreme sun: The UV light is absorbed by the coating. Wood and coating remain undamaged.
Frost and snow: Even at low temperatures the coating remains elastic and ensures that diffusion is possible for a regulated moisture equilibrium.
film ensure an especially good moisture balance in the wood. Thanks to these properties the Duraflex coating system achieves an extremely high weath-er resistance.
This was also proven by weathering tests at the Q-Lab Weathering Research Service. In addition, the Fraunhofer Wilhelm-Klauditz-Institut für Holz-forschung (WKI) has confirmed the very high elas-ticity of the coating. Further benefits are the very good bonding and impact strength against cracks.
For opaque and translucent coating systemsSikkens Wood Coatings offers a complete system for both opaque and translucent coatings with the innovative Duraflex-Technology: The products can be used as mid and top coats.

System recommendations for timber species
With products from the RUBBOL® series we offer you opaque coating systems for dimensionally stable wooden parts. They were developed for impregnation, mid and top coating and are also available for an optimum use of Duraflex-Technology. They provide a significant contribution towards a longer life cycle of wooden parts.
A mid coat improves the pore-filling and reduces blis-tering, e. g. CETOL® WM 665 or CETOL® WM 610.
RUBBOL® WM 270 also isolates discolouring extractives.
For isolating the discoloured inhabitors, use solvent-borne primer where possible with RUBBOL® SP 110. This is also valid for timber species such as afrormo-sia, afzelia, framiré, iroko, merbau, padouk, sapupira, sipo.
The sugary substances of the wood are isolated with CETOL® WM 675 or CETOL® WM 680. RUBBOL® WM 270 cannot be used as it can tear due to the inhabitors.
Here a primer as protection against blue stain is use-ful. For mid and top coats, use Duraflex-Technology such as RUBBOL® WF 382 or RUBBOL® WF 387.

For the most beautiful calling card of your house:
Coating in Sikkens Wood Coatings House door system
The perfect combination of long life and nature:
Wood-aluminum window system
Modern architecture, but also the trend for the passive use of solar energy and for low-en-ergy houses, means a constant increase in demand for large-area windows. Wooden-alu-minum windows make it possible and also offer significant benefits: High inherent stability, very good insulation and a variety of different designs. Furthermore, they are easy to main-tain and very durable. Sikkens Wood Coatings has the optimum coating for window protec-tion and an attractive offer for a colourful design.
House doors are both entry ports and calling cards – a welcome message for inhabitants and guests. The Sikkens Wood Coatings house door system is especially aligned to the many demands of entrance doors. The high-quality coating underlines the individual character, permanently protects the house door and gives it an attractive appearance.
RUBBOL® WP 151 – the new 2-component primer for opaque-coated house doors made from MDF or solid woodRUBBOL® WP 151 also ensures a standardised white base coat for complicated house doors. Special feature: The primer anchors itself in the substrate and prevents swelling of the MDF due to moisture. The extractives are well-isolated thanks to the reaction of the two components. The appli-cation is easy to carry out. The packaging content is prepared in such a way that you can create an ideal mix ratio of primer and hardener. After mix-ing, the primer can be immediately used.
Please note: For a good reaction of the compo-nents, the drying temperature should not be below 20 °C. High temperatures, ideally 25–30 °C, en-sures a better wetting between the components and therefore strengthen the isolation and bond-ing ability. The primer can be easily sanded after approx. 8 hours. Sanding should – particularly if the overcoating is only to take place on the follow-ing day – occur just before the subsequent coat-ing in order to achieve good intercoat adhesion. The overcoating with waterborne coatings can oc-cur without intermediate sanding after just two hours.
RUBBOL® WF 373 and CETOL® WF 973 as well as WV 850 wetting agent as coating for house doorsWe offer finish coats RUBBOL® WF 373 and CETOL® WF 973 for the necessary protection of the door surface. The formulations include PU components and are reinforced by the addition of wetting agents. Another advantage of the products is that they have a practical pot life of 24 hours after mixing. This means the mixed product from the previous day can be used for the second spraying, even when drying overnight.
Wood and aluminum are a strong team: Wood not only takes on the static function, but also emits a good feeling of contentment as a natural building material. Aluminum offers protec-tion against weathering influences, which guaran-tees constant consistency. Wooden-aluminum windows therefore reach the highest level of safe-ty against climate conditions and also effective fire protection as they are able to withstand fire for a longer period.
High stability and long durabilityThe effective protection by aluminum strengthens the consistency of the wood and therefore leads to an especially long service life of wood-alumi-
num windows. But there are even more benefits: Thanks to the clear separation of materials and functions, the varying dilation behavior, even with major shifts in temperature, does not present any connection problems. On the contrary: As wood has practically no reaction to temperature differ-ences in terms of dimensioning, grooves are not a problem.
In addition, wooden-aluminum windows offer cre-ative freedoms unlike any other material combina-tion. With the innovative CETOL® translucent coats and the brilliant RUBBOL® opaque coats, perfect surface protection is ensured and a harmonious, precisely aligned colour design is made possible.
Practical tips: After adding 2 % WV 850 to the desired finish coat, the mixture can be immediately processed. We rec-ommend painting the coating with max. 150 μm wet layer thickness. In bright colour shades or transpar-ent CETOL® WF 973 the mixed product is used as a mid and top coat.

Know-how:
Tips for top surfaces
Not only high-quality products are required for a perfect surface coating. Professional processing is equally as important: Everything from a flawless base to the correct spray system, right up to appropriate application onto the wooden element.
Our recommendations for professional processing:
Nozzle selection for paint and varnish• Size: 0.28 mm (0.011 inch) or 0.33 mm
(0.013 inch); spray angle: 20° for frames and leaf parts, 40°-50° for doors and flat wood structures
• The service life of a spray nozzle depends on the material being sprayed and the spray pressure (which must be checked regularly)
• The spray nozzle should never be cleaned with sharp-edged objects (e. g. knife, screw-driver, etc)
• Material filters on the spray pistol and the pump must be inspected regularly and replaced as necessary
• Shorter drying periods can be attained with a multiple coat system
Pump adjustment• Material pressure: Opaque + translucent
products 80-100 bar Double membrane pump The setting can be read from the pressure gauge Reciprocating pump Material pressure depends on the transmission ratio (consult the spray equipment manufacturer)
• Atomiser pressure for double membrane and reciprocating pumps Opaque + varnish 0.5 to about 1.2 bar (Esta system, max. 1.5 bar)
• Only the absolute minimum of atomiser air, as necessary, should be used. This can be pre-tested on the basis of spray tests on cardboard (streak-free, homogeneous, atomised spray pattern).
For automatic spray processes (e.g. Esta system)• Processing in a 1-coat system
(up to 350 μm wet)• Machine coating guarantees even material
application and thus flawless surfaces
For manual spray processes • Processing in a 2-coat system
(2 × 150–200 μm wet)• Avoids defect locations in the coating surface• Certain coat thickness even in problem areas• Smooth, evenly spread surfaces
Flow coaters and dip tanks should be regularly maintained and disinfected in order to attain a good coating result and in order to avoid bacterial attacks and the resulting unpleasant odor. This is ideally done with simple, daily measures.
Before starting work and during flow coating, check the viscosity several times a day with a DIN-4 or ISO-3 cup – the processing times are given in the corresponding technical data sheet. For thinning, please only use clean tap water. Clean and dry all equipment for applying, thinning or decanting immediately after use with clear wa-ter. When flow coating it should be ensured that all nozzles are open and the filter is clean.
We recommend emptying the flow coater after finishing and to clean with fresh water and to al-ways cover the dip tank when it is not in use.
The disinfection of flow coaters and dip tanks should occur as a preventative measure. Longer breaks in operation such as plant holidays or Christmas holidays are ideal for this. Disinfection is necessary if the coating material develops a pu-trid smell.
It is important to drain the coating material and to dispose of putrid smelling material – under no circumstances should be it be re-added after disinfection. A disinfectant such as Lyso 3025 can be used.

Know-how:
Use of the spray pistol
An evenly applied surface coating is extremely important for the long-term durability of a wooden component. Exercise of proper spray pistol handling is second only to use of proper spraying equipment.
The benefits of waterborne coating systems compared to solventborne materials are much greater in the surroundings of a paint shop than you might think. Waterborne translucent and opaque coats offer benefits in the conditions of the factory department, the emissions values, the design of filter systems and electrical equipment, danger of explosion and fire and the health of employees.
Know-how:
Processing of waterborneopaque and translucent coatings
Additional painting uses such as avoiding room ventilation, limitation of room temperature control and radical shortening of painting times are often suggested, but without limiting the painting result they cannot be realised in practice. In order to avoid painting errors we would therefore like to make a few suggestions:
1. Removal of moisture and temperature control
The view that because waterborne translucent coats do not have organic thinners means there is no need for ventilation is incorrect. As long as the opaque coating is in the water it cannot harden. It is therefore very important to ensure a good venti-lation of dry rooms.
2. Wet layer thickness The rheology of many dispersion paints allows the application of wet layer thicknesses with a higher amount. Such thick opaque coatings cannot suffi-ciently harden within the normal drying time of 12-18 hours, however, which leads to problems in transportation, working on and de-stacking win-dows. If you want the opaque coating to dry well overnight, then waterborne opaque coating should not be applied more thickly than 150 μm wet.
3. Drying If, simply due to the appearance or because of manual touching for dryness, it is already closed and a second coating is applied after just a few hours, then the first coating can swell due to the water of the second coating and then continue drying with major delay.
4. Seals Sealant and lip seals have to be aligned to the water paint system in order to avoid solvation, discolourations and adhesion to/with the coating.
5. Fittings Fittings and fastenings must be corrosion-resis-tant. The contact pressure between the frame and sash should be equal across the entire unit (sash) and not be too high.
