  • CATECHIST SPOTLIGHT

    tephen Connelly

    has been a lector,

    eucharistic minister

    and choir member both

at St. Bart’s where he has been a parishioner for four

years, and also at his previous parish. This past year,

he was ready for a new challenge: teaching 3rd grad-

    ers about his Catholic faith.

“Teaching and practicing my faith in front of 3rd grad-

ers is a challenge that has been very rewarding,” Ste-

phen said. He describes the St. Bart’s environment as:

“fun, challenging and a place to grow.”

That being said, Stephen does comment that this was

difficult to do when his class was literally, “bouncing

off the walls.” His motto was to treat each child

as if they were his own.

“We are all born with compassion

and love. As a catechist it is im-

portant to NOT be critical of the

kids, but to be a caring presence in

    their chaotic worlds.”

    Stephen is currently

    on sabbatical. He was

    commuting to Sacra-

    mento and decided

to take a break and concentrate on volunteer work

and living a life of service to others.

He has made teaching at St. Bart’s a priority and is

serious about his commitment. “I have 6—8 kids

depending on me to show up every Wednesday. I do

    take that to heart.”

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming

a catechist, Stephen’s advice would be:

    “Take the leap of faith!”
