Cross Cultural Connection

Dear Prayer Partners and Supporters,  

This  has  been  a  quite  slow  month  for  me.    I  had  eye  surgery  for  a  macular  hole  on  June  18  and  have  been  keeping  my  face  down  since  then!    Mostly  that  means  lying  down  24/7.    I  am  allowed  to  look  up  for  10  minutes  each  hour!    So  I  really  don’t  have  much  to  say  for  this  newsletter.    I  think  the  pictures  will  speak  for  themselves.    I  am  thankful  to  finally  have  this  surgery  done.    I  decided  to  not  wait  another  3  months  for  the  government  clinic.    I  finally  got  an  appointment  with  a  retinal  specialist  and  that  will  be  September  9.    I  felt  that  my  eyesight  was  getting  bad  enough  to  not  wait.    So  I  went  to  the  private  dr.  I  had  seen  before.    I  was  trying  to  save  money  by  going  to  the  government  clinic  so  that  is  one  reason  I  waited.    Praise  the  Lord  that  several  things  happened:    my  father  had  money  put  into  my  bank  account,  enough  to  cover  the  cost,  the  private  dr.  made  the  appointment,  and  I  had  the  surgery  within  a  week.    Scott  and  Evelyn  and  Paul  Kunkel  have  been  taking  good  care  of  getting  me  to  and  from  Mong  Kok  and  up  and  down  in  the  elevators.    I  was  able  to  get  good  help  from  Tonnette  who  has  been  staying  all  day  since  the  day  of  the  surgery.    We  are  planning  for  her  help  for  two  weeks.    She  is  cooking  and  keeping  the  place  clean  while  I  am  lying  face  down.    Ken’s  long  time  friend  had  made  a  massage  board  and  given  it  to  Ken  a  long  time  ago.    I  have  put  that  to  good  use  during  this  time.    Lying  down  in  a  horizontal  position  disturbs  my  equilibrium  a  bit  when  actually  getting  up.    I  have  many  things  to  be  thankful  for.    I  was  somewhat  anxious  about  getting  two  shots  in  the  eye,  which  the  Doctor  said  would  be  quite  painful.    Hah!  I  have  had  many,  many  shots  and  that  was  no  worse  than  any  I  have  ever  had.    The  dr.  visited  with  me  while  working  on  my  eye.    The  whole  thing  lasted  an  hour  and  then  I  was  up  and  on  my  way  home!    The  most  painful  thing  about  the  surgery  was  taking  the  tape  off  my  face  while  removing  the  patch!!    I  wore  the  patch  overnight.  

Ok,  enough  about  me.    I  mentioned  fellow  missionary,  David  Poling,  had  hip  replacement  surgery.    He  is  doing  very  well.    I  cannot  imagine  dealing  with  a  wheelchair  in  their  very  small  apartment,  but  he  was  very  glad  to  be  home.    His  wife,  Lynn,  is  dealing  with  a  cracked  rib,  so  that  is  painful  for  her  to  do  much  on  pushing  the  wheelchair,  etc.    Even  cooking  is  painful!  

A  few  prayer  items  for  you  all,  besides  David  and  my  recovery  times:    1.    Continue  to  pray  for  my  cousin  Ranata  Byrd  whose  husband  suddenly  died  in  June.    My  Aunt  Vonda  also  died  suddenly  about  that  same  time.    Their  funerals  were  the  same  weekend,  one  in  Colorado  and  one  in  Kentucky.      2.    I  will  be  speaking  and  teaching  at  an  English  Bible  Camp  in  mid  July.    2.    Future  mission  trip  with  Al  Corson  of  Insight  Resources,  International.    3.    My  daughter  Sara  and  two  of  her  girls  will  visit  from  July  20  to  August  3.    4.    Praise  that  our  church  trip  to  the  Home  of  Loving  Faithfulness  went  well.    Before  we  had  been  there  very  long  our  people  were  saying  we  need  to  do  this  again.    So  we  are  thinking  about  Christmas  time.
