t gives me immense pleasure in extending
warm Greetings and New Year Wishes to all
the readers of Sampark. Sampark is a good
initiative taken up by SAENIS, to bring
communication to the doorstep of each
member.
I wish all the best to this new endeavor and hope
that Sampark penetrates all barriers of
communication, and thrive as a platform for
information sharing and idea exchange among the
members.
Here I would like to emphasize the importance of
using contemporary technologies and concepts in
our regular communication channels and forums. I
believe it is necessary to escalate to next level of
technology and initiate services like online
payment for membership and posting our websites
in social networking spaces like Facebook which
are thriving with youth activity. I urge you to take
advantage of, concepts such as Webinars and use
them as tools to break the limitations of
conventional seminars and take information
sharing to a new level, where our members get
benefited. Last month I had close interaction with
Mr. David Schutt, CEO SAE International and Dr.
Andrew Brown, President SAE International, and
I would like to share that SAE International is very
supportive of SAE India and has great
expectations from SAE India. In near future, SAE
India has to emerge as a self sustaining society and
I urge participation and support of all SAE
members in India to make this happen.
I would also like to take this opportunity to invite
all of you to the forthcoming events of SAE India
namely AWIM Olympics (at Nasik on Jan 9),
SIAT 2011 (at Pune from Jan 19) and BAJA SAE
India (at Pithampur from Jan 28) and encourage
the participants.
Once again, I would like to extend Seasons
Greetings to all the members.

Wireless electric vehicle charging
Inside the car, electricity energizes an inductive coil attached to
capacitors that helps in keeping the current and voltage at the right
levels. Outside the car, a pad containing separate coils or "pick-up"
coils get coupled magnetically to the primary coil.
The coils all get tuned to the right operating frequency and electricity
Design and Engineering of new applications in Exterior, interior,
Powertrain and Body Panel segments is important for the development
of lightweight solutions and impact energy management for safety. For
this reason, Thermoplastic application development has started for
Industrial and Automotive Industry. The present focus is on the
application technology development using STAMAX Long Glass Fiber
Thermoplastic (LGF-PP) as metal replacement solution to give weight
out, cost out and integration possibilities.
Seminar on “Innovative thermoplastic solutions for automotive”, 8th December, 2010, Gurgaon
The seminar started with an overview of
Lightweight Thermoplastic solutions for
exterior body and Advanced Thermoplastics
for Interior Applications.
SAE India (Northern Section) in association with Sabic Innovative
Plastics organized a seminar titled “Innovative Thermoplastics
Solutions for Automotive”, which was held on 8th
December at
Gurgaon. The seminar covered the diverse applications of Engineering
Plastics in the area of automotive interiors, exteriors, & vehicle safety.
The seminar also gave insight into environmentally sustainable new
materials.
Among the keynote speakers were Mr. S.M Kumar, Manager,
Automotive Applications, Dr. K.Srinivasan, Senior Scientist.
The focus was on Environmentally
Sustainable materials for
Automotive. This was followed by a
session on the Structural and Non
Structural applications of Long Glass
Fibre (LGF-PP). Also, a session on
Crash and Energy Management
Applications took place due to the

needs to be in proximity to the pad containing the pick-up coils.
Power flows to the transmitter, and magnetic resonance goes
through the receiver to the controller and the battery gets
recharged.
In future, there is a possibility of inductive
power transfer technology embedded onto
the roads, so that EVs will get charged as
they drive along. This will facilitate in no

The seminar saw participation of over a 100 people from the Auto
OEMs & Suppliers including companies like Maruti Suzuki,

carries a far lower risk of electrical shock, when compared with
conductive charging because there are no exposed conductors and
is more convenient as the charging device need to be placed on or
closer to the charge plate.

Due to the high cost of battery pack in an electric vehicle, its weight
and size, Insufficient Recharging Infrastructure availability and high
demand of precious metals like lithium, heavy metals and other rare
elements (such as neodymium, boron and cobalt) ,the focus on
improvising the Battery Charging facility for Electric vehicles is now
shifting towards Wireless Charging .
