Celebration Newsletter 2013
While it is logical to identify and address the source of a childs problem, Ive learned that struggles are best addressed when we look at the whole child. A vision we have for the children who live at Eagle Ranch is their overall development the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, social, physical aspects of their lives.
We have strategies in place that help develop our children in each of these areas. Some of the childrens progress can be quantified through testing, while others are more subjective. Our objective is to align with how Jesus was described in Luke 2:52: Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. In this newsletter, you will see how various aspects of our program motivate the development of the children. One of the most memorable is a super sprint triathlon completed by 14 of our boys this past spring. For many, it was their first time to run, bike or swim any great distance, especially on the same day. It was rewarding to see the perseverance of these children as they trained through the rain and cold of the winter months. Thank you again for investing in the development of our children.

Josh, 17, was glad he was able to continue participating in band when he came to
Eagle Ranch and began attending Flowery Branch High School. The euphonium player
recently received top honors as the schools Most Outstanding Symphonic Band Brass Player.
In addition to success in band, Josh is finding success at Eagle Ranch. The Ranch has helped me a lot, he said. Its helped me be more responsible
and respectful. I get along better with my family.
Next year, Josh looks forward to playing in the Flowery Branch Marching Band and moving up to
the schools prestigious Wind Ensemble.

In addition to learning that there would be consequences for poor behavior and choices, Tyler learned to communicate in a positive way.
He chooses his words wisely now, Rhonda said.
Now 11, Tyler recently graduated from the Eagle Ranch program. At his graduation ceremony, Tylers houseparents, counselor, assistant counselor and families of other children in his home commented on the huge changes they had seen in him and his mom.
Youve worked through some incredibly tough problems and have come through like a pro, one mom told Rhonda.
When you say youll do something, you follow through with your word, Tylers assistant coun-selor, Micah Thomas, noted. Youve also got a servants heart that I hope to see grow.
Tyler is looking forward to coming back to the Ranch and visiting his new friends. He will have plenty of opportunity as he will continue to participate in family counseling sessions with his sister, Kayla, 12, who asked to come to the Ranch last year when she saw the positive impact it was having on her brother.
Kayla is completely different than Tyler, Rhonda said. She is quiet and has a hard time opening up. She was bullied and has a low self esteem. She thought the Ranch could help her work through some of her problems.
As Tylers graduation ceremony came to a close, the mom of another child in the Hope Home told Tyler she hopes her son makes similar progress.
You make great choices. Youre a loyal friend, she said. The name Tyler means a laborer, and that fits you well. Youve worked hard.
Before I came to the Ranch, I struggled with
talking to my family and respecting teachers and
peers. I didn't have real friends at all. Not even close.
The Eagle Ranch program helped me feel closer to
my family and my dog. I feel like I am not the mean
kid anymore and like that I have real friends now.
I learned about myself and my family, that love
is patient; love is kind, it is not rude; it always
protects, always trusts and always hopes.
My view of God changed. I now feel like I know
who He is, and He's right here now.
I feel that my family is ready to graduate because
we get along better at home.
I'd like to thank: Micah (my assistant counselor),
Mr. Ronnie and Mrs. Pam (Director of Treatment
and his wife), Jim, Amanda, Ben and Olivia (my
houseparents and their kids), Matt (my counselor),
and my mom for supporting me through the year.
Tyler
When Rhonda Hamer came to Eagle Ranch
to pick up an application packet, she broke
down in tears at the front desk.
I was thinking, Who does this? Who sends a 9-year-old away from home?, she recalls. It was a huge battle within myself. I didnt know if Id be able to drop off my kid with people I didnt even know."
The single mom had reached the end of her rope. After repeatedly getting into fights and conflicts at school, her son Tyler had been suspended.
I was worried that hed lash out, hurt someone and end up in a juvenile detention center, Rhonda said. I had heard Eagle Ranch was a great program, and I knew deep down it was the right thing to do. I was grateful there was something like this so close to where I live that was affordable.
For Rhonda, Eagle Ranchs choice-consequence model was exactly what Tyler needed. Ive always known that I should give consequences for bad choices, but I had a hard time following through.
At the Ranch, there were multiple people inter-acting with him and giving him consequences. I learned how to follow that up at home. Tyler tried to push every button, but he finally realized that I was serious about it.

Top: Tyler with his mom, Rhonda, and sister, Kayla. Left: Tyler with his houseparents, Jim and Amanda.
Tyler is creative, curious, persistent and genuine.
To others, his accomplishments may have appeared to come
easily, but he worked hard to get to where he is now.

Celebrations of SuccessAt the end of each school year, Eagle Ranch celebrates the successes of the children. For some, success
is improving grades. Others achieve success by making significant changes in behaviors and attitudes.
Each childs success can be attributed to an experience that motivated them to make a change.
Connecting with FamilyChynna, 14, had tried other childrens programs that didnt work for her. She had problems show-ing up to class on time and could be disrespectful. Having successfully completed her first year in the Eagle Ranch program, Chynna is making good grades and progress.
It was rough at first. I wasnt used to being in a school with so much structure and so much help.
An Atmosphere of Freedom Travis, 16, was receiving regular infractions at school for missed homework. He also had a hard time opening up and expressing himself in group meetings. Two field trips to colleges inspired him to make changes.
We went to the University of Georgia and then to Auburn. Seeing the college atmosphere motivated me to step up and get my homework done. I got to see what the outside world looks like when you graduate high school. UGA was a huge campus with so many students. I want to make my family proud and open doors for myself."
I got to see what the outside world looks like when you
graduate high school.
Making the GradeSpending most of her class time worrying about how bullies might treat her in the hall after class, Rachel, 13, failed sixth grade. She came to the Eagle Ranch School with anxiety.
I was so distracted by bullies that I couldnt focus on my schoolwork. My teachers would tell me I was failing, but they didnt tell me what I needed to do. At the Ranch, I get a lot more attention and the teachers let me know exactly what I needed to do to catch up. I also asked for Jesus to come into my life. I realized He is always knocking on your heart and is ready for you. I now have all As and Bs, and I feel more confident.
They put a lot of rules around getting to class on time, which was hard at first but really helpful. The teachers are really easy to talk to and they helped me calm down and deal with my anger. I was able to learn more, and I have better grades than Ive ever had. The biggest difference in Eagle Ranch from the other programs I was in is that it works with your family. Things are a lot more stable at home now. My mom and I get along better.
I wasnt used to being in a school
with so much structure and so much help.
Total Transformation: Leo Age 14, Love Home, Finish Time 01:50:00
" Ive played soccer and football, but I was in for a rude awakening when I arrived at the first triathlon practice. I definitely under- estimated the amount of work involved. I can now run under a 10-minute mile, which I never thought Id be able to do. I learned to push myself out of my comfort zone. I worked harder than Im used to so that I could achieve something and make it a reality."
Tri-Kids motto is Dream. Believe. Achieve. When signing up to participate, each boy listed what he dreamed of accomplishing and a motto for moti-vating him. The boys were also asked to tie their triathlon goals to overall goals in life.
First-Place Finish: TreyAge 13, Grace Home, Finish Time 00:47:18
In the past, I quit cross country. I quit baseball. I quit on myself. I thought triathlon training was going to be easy, but it was harder than I thought, and I really thought about quitting again. I decided I should finish it, and Im really happy I did.
Kris, 13, of the Love Home noted his personal goal of respecting his grandmother. Josh, 17, of the Joy Home, hopes to achieve straight As. The goal setting helped encourage the children throughout their training and gave them something to look back on.
Settin and eachin Goal
History was made on May 22 at Eagle Ranch. Fourteen boys participated in the Ranchs first ever triathlon. The super sprint course included a 250-yard swim, 8 miles on bike, and a 2.25 mile run. The event was made possible through a partnership with Tri-Kids Inc., a non-profit organiza-tion providing training, equipment and financial support to kids interested in competing in triathlons.
For two months, the boys trained with volunteer coaches from Tri-Kids twice a week. Ranch staff and Tri-Kids coaches worked to map out a course at the Ranch.
Having the event at the Ranch was unifying for our staff and children, noted Eagle Ranch Assistant Coun-selor Garrett Durham, who helped coordinate the event. The boys were later treated to pizza and cake while Tri-Kids volunteers recognized the participants they coached.
Tri-Kids was a great complement to the Eagle Ranch program, Garrett continued. Many of the kids here have a hard time really visualizing their goals for behavior because it isnt always tangible. Triathlon training enables them to keep track of results and realize their goals."
Thank you to Tri-Kids. We appreciate the time and energy of the coaches who generously volunteered to work with our children.
Dream, Believe, Achieve
MJ, 13, of the Love Home crosses the finish line.
Eagle Ranch School began in 2001 with two teachers and two parapros teaching 6th-8th grade. Today, five teachers and five parapros teach children in 6th-9th grade.
Leaving a Legacy
Wade Pearce helped found Eagle Ranch School in 2001 and has faithfully served as the schools principal and the Ranchs Director of Education for 13 years. He now is moving on to the next chapter of his life as he joins Chestnut Mountain Elementary School as its principal. We look forward to continuing to work with Wade, as Chestnut Mountain is attended by elementary school age children at the Ranch.
The students, teachers and our Ranch community have been truly blessed by Wades time here, said Executive Director Eddie Staub.
Faithfully servingEagle Ranch from
2000-2013
2000: Wade hired as Director of Education
2001: School begins in trailers
2006: School building is completed
2007: School accredited by SACS, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
I have respected Mr. Pearce and will really miss him. He has helped me in hard times and he has calmed me down when I am very mad. He is another dad to me. I had hard times with Mr. Pearce but will always love him. He is the best principal I have ever had. I wish that he would not leave. Nobody could ever replace him.
Breana
Mr Pearce is one of the most spiritually sound people I know. He has influenced me as a Christian and shown me the qualities of a true Christian.
Jim
Mr. Pearce is kind, good hearted and very respectful. He is a very honest man and kids can go to him with problems that they have in the school. He is not selfish and puts his own time into our field trips and our needs.
Baylei
I think Mr. Pearce is the best principal Ive had in years. He listens to what I have to say about the school and actually takes action.
Rachel
Mr. Pearce has been a really good principal to all of the students at Eagle Ranch. He is always there when I need help with something. He never lets me down at all. I will always remember him.
Joshua
He is a leader and many should try to follow him."
Matthew
What I respect in him is he gives you chances. He wants you to do your best.
Kris
The students at Eagle Ranch School reflect on what Mr. Pearce means to them . . .
Thank s for everything Mr. Pearce
