Water-transport through concrete structuresCracks in concrete are a common phenomenon due to the relatively low tensile strength. Durability of concrete is impaired by these cracks since they provide an easy path for the transportation of liquids and gases such as concrete construction joints that potentially contain harmful and aggressive substances. If concrete cracks grow and reach the reinforcement, not only the concrete itself may be attacked, but also the reinforcement will be corroded. Therefore, it is important to control the crack width and to heal the cracks as soon as possible. Since the costs involved for maintenance and repair of concrete structures are usually high, this is why BPA engineers are focusing on the development of self-healing concrete. Self-healing of cracks in concrete would contribute to a longer service life of concrete structures and would make the material not only more durable but also more sustainable.CEMflex Technology supports actively the self-healing and self-sealing idea by a patented salt-free crystallization and natural mineralization process.

How is the self-healing process working?Concrete has an autogenous healing capacity as unhydrated cement is present in the matrix or in the construction joint. When water contacts the unhydrated cement, further hydration occurs. Furthermore, dissolved CO2 reacts with Ca2+ to form CaCO3 crystals. These two mechanisms may actively heal and seal cracks. The BPA Engineers found the way to support this process on a very effective way by using the CEMflex Technology which is patented and many time tested at different Universities is Germany such as Braunschweig, Leipzig and Stuttgart. Also external independent labratorys confirm the high active sealing behavior of CEMflex. This patented process is 100% salt free!
This active sealing process gets initiated by the patented coating including unhydrated cement particles and dissolution subsequent carbonation of Ca(OH)2).
Other active sealing reactions are additionally taking place when the active reaction starts.
