CESAR CHAVEZ

Cesar was born on March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona

•Cesar Chavez was a union organizer and social activist of

the 1960s.

1960s’

• His family lost their farm due to back taxes and had to become migrant farm

workers to make a living.

•After the 8th grade, Cesar Chavez became a full-time farm worker.  He saw how

badly people were being treated

and decided to do something about it.

•Chavez married Helen Fabela. And had 8 children.

• Cesar first joined the League of United Latin Americans Citizens. In 1962 he co-

founded the United Farm Workers Association with Delores Huerta.  They used non-violent ways to protest like boycotting or fasting. He learned that

from Gandhi.

•Chavez‘s grandparents homesteaded more than one hundred acres in the Gila Valley and raised 14 children.

Chavez‘s father, Librado, started his family in 1924 when he married Juana

Estrada. Cesar was the second of their six children.

• Chavez attended more than 30 elementary schools because his family moved very often.

• By the time Cesar Chavez died, he had won many rights for the migrant farm worker.  He got them better wages in pay, better housing and safer working conditions.  Cesar Chavez teaches the valuable lesson that one person can

make a difference.

In 1968, Chavez leads a national boycott of California table grape growers, which becomes known as "La Causa“. By the end of the boycott in 1970, 17

million Americans supported it, including many political and civil rights leaders. Robert Kennedy was a particularly strong supporter.

• In 1968, Chavez goes on a 25-day hunger strike, which attracts

enormous national attention. The fast reaffirms his movement's

belief in non-violence.

• In 1972, Chavez undertakes a 24-day fast.

• In1993, Chavez died on April 23.

• In1994, President Bill Clinton awarded Chavez a Medal of Freedom.
