Our2023Goal

OurambitionistofortifythedistinctivehumanitiesecosystemwehaveatIllinoisandmakeitmission-centraltotheuniversityasawhole.Weseektoembedhumanitiesresearch,teachingandpublicactivityintheheartoftheland-grantcampusinordertomodelwhatatruly comprehensive public research university in the 21st century looks like. Ourcommitmenttodiversity,equityandinclusionismatchedbytheexpertiseofourfacultyintheseareasofinquiry.Theworkofthehumanitiesinallitsbreadthanddepthiscriticaltoimaginingjust,productiveandinnovativefuturesforall.

UnlikeotherTaskForces,whatisatstakeinthehumanitiesin2018isnotbuilding

fromscratch,butbuildinguponthepeople,theinstitutionalassetsandtheglobalreputationwealreadyhavetoguaranteethatthefutureisgroundedineducationshapedbythestudyof the human condition, in all its limits and possibilities. Faculty and students in thehumanitiescanandshouldbeleadersin“ChangingtheFaceofKnowledge”atIllinois.

MethodsandContextOurTaskForcewascommissionedinlateOctoberof2017.WeheldhalfadozenF2F

committee meetings between November 2017 and February 2018. Antoinette BurtonpresentedattheJanuary26,2018StrategicPlanningRetreat.ShesharedtheoutlineofthatpresentationwiththeHumanitiesCouncilshortlythereafter.ThereweretwoOpenForumsheldinmid-February.ThesesessionswereadvertisedviatheIPRHlistservandtheHClist.TheywereconvenedtopresentthepreliminarydraftReportandelicitfeedbackfromthebroader humanities community. In addition to the data-gathering they did, Task Forcecommitteemembersdrewon theOVCR’sHumanitiesWorkingGroupReportof2015;ondatagathered forandpresentedat the IPRHHumanitiesRetreat inAugust2017;andonfeedbackfromtheJanuaryStrategicPlanningRetreatprovidedbytheProvost’sOffice.OurTaskForcereportwasfinalizedinthemiddleofcampus-wideconversationsaboutgraduateeducationandtheGEOstrike.

PremisesofStrategicThinkingfortheHumanitiesin2017-18

• Theexceptionalfacultyresearchexcellencewehaveincoreandemergingareas

isthebasisforavibrantecosystemofinternationalhumanitiesexpertiseandinnovationatIllinois;

• Forthatecosystemtothriveandgrow,campusmustrecognizethatstronglinks

betweenresearchandeducationinthehumanitiesareessentialforourstudents’presentandfuturetraining,civicidentityandwell-being;

• Thepersistenceofbothmisinformationandskepticismabouttheviabilityof

undergraduatehumanitiesmajorsinthejobmarketisaseriousimpedimenttoourcollectiveinstitutionalfuture(i.e.,notjustinthehumanities);

• Thechallengesweface,oncampusandnationally,inmakingthecaseforhumanities

scholarshipandteachingasurgentlynecessarybutunevenlyfundedareongoingandrequirenewconversationsatIllinoisaboutmission,value,resourcesandmetrics;

• Theimpactofthesteadyerosionofcampussupportforgraduateeducationinthehumanities on our research capabilities and excellence is not visible to campusadministration,yetitthreatenstheveryfutureofthehumanitiesecosystem;

• Ourcommitmenttothecentralityofdiversity,equity,inclusion,accessand

campusclimatetoallaspectsofthehumanitiesatIllinoisANDtheuniquerolehumanitiesscholarshipareinstitutionalassets,keytoeverythingIllinoisaspirestobe;

• AkeymechanismforsupportinghumanitiesenterpriseatIllinois–Advancement–isnotworkingforus;thistakesahightollonhumanitiesunitsandrepresentsmissedopportunitiesacrossallquartersofhumanitiesendeavor,includingdiversity,equityandaccess;

• WearecommittedtoinstitutionalculturechangeatIllinoisthatensuresthatthe

humanitiesarefullyembeddedinresearch,educationandpublicactivity,throughthecombinationofcore,emergingandnewarenasofhumanitiesinquiry;

• Thedistinguished,interdisciplinaryanddiverseecosystemofhumanitiesresearch,

educationandpublicactivityiscentralto“ChangingtheFaceofKnowledge”atIllinoisinthenextdecadesofthe21stcentury.

I.DefiningtheHumanitiesNow

“Thehumanities”isacomplexofmulti-disciplinaryfieldsandmethodswithdeep

rootsinhighereducation.Today,thehumanitieshavebecomesynonymouswiththestudyandteachingofeverythingrelatedtothehumanexperienceinitspast,presentandfutureforms.ThisbroadremitallowsscholarsandteachersinthesefieldstotaketopicsasdiverseasRomanpoetry,Bollywood,theartsofresistance,metaphysics,multiracialdemocracy,medievalhistory,culturesoftechnologyandmedicine,worldmusic,queercitizenship,prisoneducation,human-animalrelationsandtheglobalenvironmentastheirobjectsofstudy.

History,Philosophy,English,Religion,ArtHistory–alongsideFrenchandItalian,

SpanishandPortuguese,GenderandWomen’sStudies,Latina/oStudies,Communication,andMediaandCinemaStudies–arejustsomeofthedepartmentsthatmakeupthehumanitiesecosystematIllinois.WhilethemajorityofhumanitiespractitionershaveappointmentsintheCollegeofLiberalArtsandSciences,wearetobefoundallovertheuniversity,includingtheiSchool,theCollegeofEducation,theCollegeofMediaandtheCollegeofFineandAppliedArts.Thoughhumanistsareoftenurgedtobeinterdisciplinaryandtocollaborate,thetruthisthatwealreadydoso,inconcertwithpartnersnearandfar.

Illinois’vibranthumanitiesecosystemallowsstudentstodevelopdiversemodesofthinking,toidentifyproblems,toanalyzeevidence,tomakeargumentsandtograspcomplexitythrougharangeoftopicsthatareroutinelyboundary-crossing.Theylearntomakesenseofvastbodiesofknowledge;todooriginalresearch;andtoparticipateinshapingthefutureofoldandnewfieldsofinquiry.Theseareindispensablecapacitiesfornavigatingandleadinginourrapidlychangingworld.Studyinthehumanitiesservesasawide-anglelensforinvestigatingthewholeofhumanexperience,localandglobal--andforgrapplingwiththelimitsofahuman-centricvisionaswell.

Thehumanitiesareheterogeneousandever-evolving.TheearliestNational

EndowmentfortheHumanitiesawardsonourcampusinthe1970swereforprojectsonSumerianclaytabletsandLincoln’spoliticalthought.The2017cohortofIllinoisNEHawardeesincludesascholarofeasternEuropeanmusicaltraditions;ofrace,classandthebodyinAmericanfiction;ofmechanicalliteracyinBritishculture;ofhistoricpreservationintheOldSouth;ofanEgyptianslave-queenandthebuiltenvironmentshecreated;andofthelinksbetweentheclassicsandindigenousknowledge.1

Thepurposeofapublicresearchuniversityinthe21stcenturyistosparkand

sustaintheproductionofvibrant,questioningandinnovativeknowledgeinconjunctionwithlocal,nationalandinternationalcommunities.Inaland-grantinstitution,ourobligationistomakethisknowledgeaffordableandtoensurethatstudentsfromallwalksoflifehaveaccesstowhattheuniversityhastooffer.Whethercuriosity-drivenorapplied,thevitalworkproducedbyhumanistsatIllinoisfostersthesecommitmentsbycontinuingtochangethefaceofknowledgebothinourfieldsandinthediversearenasofinquirywithwhichweengage.

II.WhattheHumanitiesatIllinoisAreDoing

Wearechangingthefaceofknowledgeviaresearchthatisrecognizedbythe

mostprestigiousawardsinthefield:In2018,humanitiesresearchatIllinoisisuncommonlyenergeticandinnovative.Ourprovenexcellenceandaward-winningscholarshipinformourteachingandpublicengagementinwaysthathelptoshapethereputationofthecampusasanextraordinarytestinggroundforideasthatcanchangetheworld.WehaveacriticalmassofNEH,ACLS,Guggenheimandothergrantwinnersvirtuallyunparalleledamongourpeers.AndweleadtheBigTenAcademicAllianceinAndrewW.MellonFoundationawards.Thoughitisrarelycited,theseexternalfundingsourceshavebroughtmillionsofdollarstoIllinoisinsupportbothofindividualresearchandthematicareaslikeBio-humanitiesandEnvironmentalHumanities.Theyalsohelptodevelopnewmethodsofinquiryandnewmodelsofinterdisciplinarycollaboration(SeeAppendicesA1-3).

Weareshapingundergraduateeducationacrossthewholecampus:Weknow

thatemployersinallsectorsoftheeconomyareseekingemployeeswhocanthinkbeyondthetechnologicalfix.AtIllinois,thehumanitiescontributetovocationaleducationinitsmosturgentandexpansivesense.Employersrepeatedlysaythatthecriticalreading,writingandthinkingskillsweteacharekeyfortrainingstudentsinessentialworkplacecompetencies.2Wealsohelpstudentsdevelopconceptualandimaginativecapacitiesthatbringhumanitiesknowledgetobearoneveryquestionoftheday,whetheritbeclimatechange,globalization,digitaltechnology,inequalityortheveryquestionofthehumanitself.AtIllinois,studentsshouldgraduatewiththeconvictionthatcontemporarychallengesmustbemetbyacombinationofapproacheswhichnotonlyinclude,butcanbedrivenby,humanitiesexpertiseandmethods.Forallthesereasons,humanitiesteachingandlearningarecriticaltomeetingtheUniversity’soveralllearningoutcomegoalsandtoitsambitiontoremainacompetitiveworld-classresearchuniversity.

Weareadvocatingfordiversityandequityinwordanddeed:HumanitiesdepartmentsandtheinterdisciplinaryunitswithwhichtheyaffiliateatIllinoisarethelocusofsomeofthebestscholarshipproducedbyunrepresentedminorityfacultyoncampusandbeyond.Manyofthesefacultyhavegloballyrecognizedexpertiseonissuesofdiversity,equality,inclusionandcampusclimate.Acknowledgingtheirworkand

embeddingitintheveryfabricoftheuniversity’sidentityandmissioniscriticaltothefutureofthecampus,theregion,thestateandthenation.Thehumanitiesremainatthecoreofthisuntappedpotential,whetheritpertainstoUSminorityculturesorglobaldiversityissues.WealsoserveasanimportantbridgetosocialscienceandSTEMprojectsthatsharetheseintellectualandinstitutionalcommitmentsviacollaborativeresearch,fundingopportunitiesandinstitutionalleadership.ThecombinationofhumanitiescommitmenttoandexpertiseindiversityandequityisacampusassetwithtremendouspowerforeducationalchangeandinstitutionaltransformationatIllinois.

Weareeducatingstudentsforlifeaswellasforjobs:Regardlessofwhatcareerpathhumanitiesstudentstake,theyleaveIllinoisequippedtoengagearapidlychangingworld.Thatworldisincreasinglydominatedbytechnologicalinnovationsandthelimitsandpossibilitiesthatarisefromthem.Humanitieslecturehalls,seminarrooms,museumgalleries,libraries,internationalspeakerseriesandlivelyprogramofferingsprovideopportunitiesbothtoengagethequestionsofthedayandtothinkaboutsubjectsandproblemsthatareunrelatedtothistimeorthisplace.Thatdoublevisionandtheflexibilityofminditcultivatesaredistinctivecharacteristicsofhumanitiesmethodsandtraining.IfthecoremissionofIllinoisremainseducation,thehumanities--oftodayandofthefuture--isfoundationaltothatmission.TheroleofourhumanitiesecosysteminmakingIllinoisarecognizedleaderintheglobal21stcenturymustbeacknowledgedandresourcedaccordingly.

WeareadvancingnationaldebatesaboutcommunityengagementandPublic

Humanities:ThehumanitiesatIllinoishavelongbeenpublic-facing.Weareexperiencedatconveningdiverseaudiencesanddevelopingstrategiesforcreatinggenuinelyreciprocalrelationshipswithcommunitiesandstakeholdersbeyondthequad.Atahistoricalmomentwhentheideaofeducationasapublicgoodcanseemasthoughitiscollapsingundertheweightofmarketvalues,humanitieseducatorsareattheforefrontoflocal,nationalandinternationaldiscussionsofwhatisatstakeforthepublicresearchuniversity.HistoricallyeliteinstitutionslikeIllinoisneedtobechange-makersincollectiveconversationsaboutthemeaningandveryfutureof“publicgoods”intoday’sdynamicenvironment.Humanitiesfacultyandstudentsmustberecognizedandempoweredasleadersinthatprocess.

III.ImperativesfortheNextFiveYearsandBeyond

EmbedtheHumanitiesatIllinois:By2023,wewantthehumanities,inallitsdiversityandexcellence,tobemorefullyembeddedinthefabricoftheuniversity’sidentityandglobalmission,bothsymbolicallyandstructurally.WhetheryouareseeingIllinoisfromafarorfromthegroundup,wewantyoutounderstandhowtheinstitutionrelieson,andvalues,theresearch,teachingandpublic-facingworkthathumanistsdo.Indeed,Illinois’futureasanengineofinnovation,responsiveandresponsibletothesocietyitwishestohelpshape,dependsonavibrant,well-resourcedhumanitiesecosystemthatisattheforefrontofinstitutionalidentityandpriorities.OurfacultyandstudentsarethefaceofchangingknowledgeatIllinois.

CreatetheFuture(s)ofHumanitiesResearch:Resourcesneedtoberedirected

andfurtherenhancedtoguaranteethatwewillbeabletodrawoncoreandemergentareasofstrengthANDpushtowardnewhorizonsofhumanitiesresearchandgraduatetraining.Somemorerecentfields(DigitalandPublicHumanities)areestablishednationallybutstillnascentinstitutionallyatIllinois.Others(Bio-humanitiesandEnvironmentalHumanities)areindevelopment,offeringrealopportunitiesforIllinoishumanitiesfacultytoleadthenationalconversation.Stillotherhorizonsareasyetunforeseenandinneedofspaceandresourcestogerminateormovethemforward.SomehumanitiesresearchservesasabridgetoSTEMfields;somehumanitiesresearchwilllinktothearts;andsomewilldrawonhumanities’ownglobalandinterdisciplinarystrengths.Inadditiontotheexternalfundingweroutinelywin,weseekcampussupportforinvestmentsthatwillgrowthesediversearenasinrecognitionthattheexcellenceofthewholeuniversitydependsonthem.

StrengthentheHumanitiesPhDoftheFuture:AswithSTEM,theartsandother

fields,whenitcomestotheproductionofnewknowledgesandwaysofthinking,thehumanitiesshareadeepdependenceuponvibrant,sustainablegraduateprograms.Yettherelationshipbetweenhumanitiesresearchandgraduateeducationisalsounique.Andinthecurrentmoment,withhumanitiesPhDprogramscuttothebone,bothdoctoraleducationinourfieldsandthehumanitiesecosystemitselfareatseriousrisk.Withinstitutionalcommitment,resourcesandwill,theIllinoisHumanitiesPhDofthefuturecanbestrengthenedinwaysthatbothcontinueexcellenceandinnovationinhumanitiesresearchandembracethevalueofdiversecareeroptionsforthosewhopursuethedegree.Thiswillrequirecampusattentiontothegradualde-fundingofgraduateprogramsandthelimitsofrevenue-generationinitiativesinthesefields.Strategizinginconcertandconsultationwithfacultyandgraduatestudentsinhumanitiesunitsiscritical.Changingthecultureofdepartmentstoadjusttotheprospectofcareerdiversitybeyondacademeisalsokeytothisimperative.

PromotetheREALfactsabouttherelationshipofhumanitiesdegreestojobs:

Thebiggestmythaboutundergraduateswithhumanitiesmajorsisthattheyareunemployableinthe“real-world.”Statisticsnationallyandfromourowncampusrevealtheopposite:graduateswithaBAfromhumanitiesunitspossessauniquesetofskillsthatarevaluedintoday’sworkplaces.Humanitiesgraduatesarehighlysoughtafterandearncompetitivesalaries.Recentstudiesshowtheyarealsohappierintheircareersandpoisedtofacetheshiftinggroundofthecontemporaryjobmarketwithmoreflexibilityandconfidencebecauseoftheirtraining.3Thehumanitiesarehistoricallypowerfulpathwaysthroughhighereducationforunder-servedandunderrepresentedminoritystudentsandcommunities.Illinois,withitsuniquemixofexcellenceinSTEMandhumanitiesfields,shouldbeleadingwiththismessageinhighschoolsacrossthestateandinthenationalconversationaswell.

GrowthePiethroughAdvancement:Werequireresourcescommensuratewith

ourneedsforattractingalumniandotherdonorsandpartnerswhorecognizethereturnoninvestmentthathumanitiesresearchandeducationbringtoIllinoisandtheworldsitseekstoimpact.Wearebehindourpeersinthisarea.Giventherelativelynarrowbandofexternalfundersavailabletohumanitiesresearchers,theshrinkingstaterevenueforpublichighereducationandthemomentumofthesesquicentennialcampaign,itisimperativethatthelackofAdvancementpersonnelandstructureinthehumanitiesunitsberedressed.Thisisnotafixwhichwillseebenefitsintheimmediateterm.ButamuchbiggercommitmenttoAdvancementinthehumanitiesnowwillhelptoguaranteethatourfinancialsituationatIllinoislooksverydifferentinthedecadestocome.

AccountfortheCriticalAdvantagesofDiversity,Equity,InclusionandAccess:

HumanitiesandrelateddepartmentsatIllinoishaveacriticalmassoffacultyofcolorandscholarswhoseresearchandteachingfocusesonissuesofconcerntounderrepresentedminoritypopulations--moresothanmanyunitsoncampus.Thoughwemustcontinuetoimproveinthisarea,weknowthatexcellenceanddiversityaremutuallyconstitutiveandthatresearchandteachinginthesearenasiskeytotherealizationofeveryotheraspirationIllinoishasformakingitsmarkontheworld.4Inadditiontoprizingdemographicmetrics,theinstitutionmustrecognizeandrelymoreonthisoftenhumanities-basedexpertiseaswenavigatetheterrainofbothhighereducationandtoday’sdebatesaboutthestate,globalculture,economicdisparity,culturaldifference,immigrationandmuchmore.Likethehumanitiesitself,commitmentstodiversity,equity,accessandinclusion--andthescholarsandteacherswhoadvancethem--shouldbeembeddedineveryaspectofuniversitylife.

IV.ChallengesandOpportunitiesProblem:Misinformation(“fakenews”)aboutthevalueofundergraduateeducationintheHumanities

Diagnosis:DespitetheavailabilityofstudiesandstatisticsaboutthesuccessofhumanitiesBAholdersinthejobmarket,themyththatourmajorsaresomehowfataltoemploymentpossibilitiesremainspowerfulamongcampusleaders,statelegislators,parentsandstudentsthemselves.Thisisanationalproblem,bornofareturn-on-investmentmentalitythatisshortonfacts.

• Inventory,advertiseandregularlyconsultHumanitiesIndicators

• DeveloptargetedcareerservicesforhumanitiesBAseekersthatcombinesemploymentopportunitieswiththechancetorecognizetheportabilityoftheirskillsinmultipleworkspaces(seeInvestmentforGrowthproposalfromLASnowunderreviewinAppendixB)

• CreateastrongerpipelineofhumanitiesstudentsfromIllinoishighschools,withspecialemphasisonmakingunderrepresentedminorityandfirst-in-familystudentsacampusprioritywithcommensurateresources

Collegegraduateswhohavehonedtheirintelligenceonthestudyofcomplextexts,culture,andphilosophyfillapresentandgrowingneed,asarticles,interviews,andstudieswithinthebusinessworlditselfattest.15Thequestion“WhatdohumanitiesmajorsDOaftertheygraduate?”hasastraightforwardanswer:theyusetheparticularcritical,analytical,andcommunicationskillsfosteredbytheirhumanitiestrainingtosolveproblemsforeverykindofindustry,business,andorganization.Everyemploymentsectorneedspeoplewhoaregoodatworkingwithcomplexqualitativeinformationandcanbringtobearanunderstandingoftherelevanthumanandculturalcontextstohelpimproveeverythingfromdataanalysistodecisionmaking.YetoneofthebiggestproblemstheuniversityfacesisdecliningLAShumanitiesenrollments,whichhavenearlyhalvedsince2007.ThedropinenrollmentsisdueatleastinparttotheincreasedfocusoncollegeeducationasvocationaltrainingandthemyththatahumanitiesBAdoesnotpreparestudentsforjobs,eventhoughtheIlliniSuccessdatathatIllinoishasbeencollectingsince2014showsotherwise(seeFigureA).Necessarilymodest,recenteffortsbytheDepartmentofEnglishtobetterpositionstudentsforthejobmarketandtoconnectpotentialemployerswithEnglishmajorshavealreadyproducedstrikingresults.Beginningin2014,thedepartmentredirectedcertainexistingresources(includingasinglespecializedfacultyline)tocommunications,careerdevelopment,andinternshipprogramming.Asaresult,theplacementrateforstudentsjumpedfrom59%in2014–15to85%thefollowingyear,anemploymentratecommensuratewiththatofprogramsinEngineeringandBusiness.This24%increaseinjobplacementforEnglishdepartmentmajorsdemonstrateswhatcanbeaccomplishedacrossthehumanitiesatIllinoiswithanadequatecommitmentofdedicatedpersonnelandfinancialresources.ThepracticalrelevanceofhumanitiestraininginanincreasinglytechnologicalworldcanbeattheforefrontoftheIllinoisstory.Existingstructurestopromotethehumanitiesasapathtosuccessarelimitedinscopeandresources,particularlyasgraduatestudyleadingtoanacademiccareerinthehumanitiesisnotadependablepathinthecurrentjobmarket.Humanitiesstudentshaveexcellentalternativestograduateorprofessionalschool,butourinstitutionoffersthemlittlehelpindiscoveringthem.TheLife+CareerDesignLabencouragesstudentstothinkbroadlyabouttheeducationalandco-curricularopportunitiesavailabletothemaswellastodesignapaththatoptimizestheirfouryearsatIllinoisbutintentionallystopsshortofhelpingthemwithjobattainment.Networking,careerfairs,alumnimentoring,thespecificsofjobapplications,andemployeroutreachliebeyonditspurview.TheCareerCenter,inservingallofcampus,lacksthediscipline-specificconnectionsandknowledgetoguidehumanitiesstudentsinrecognizingtheirvalueintheworkplaceandarticulatingittoemployers.Moreover,thedecentralizednatureofcampuswide

careerservicesmeansthathumanitiesstudentsdonotgetthediscipline-specificadvocacyandcorporateoutreachthatisavailabletostudentsinSTEMandpreprofessionalmajors.Despitethesechallenges,ourstudentsdogoontofindmeaningfulworkinawiderangeofoccupationsinallsectors.Thesesuccessstoriesremainlargelyunknown,however,becauseLAS,thelargestandmostdisciplinarilydiverseoftheuniversity’scolleges,hasfewerresourcesperstudentdevotedtomarketingandcommunicationsthananyoftheothers.Manyhumanitiesstudentsalreadyfindtheirwayintocampusinternships,serviceopportunities,andstudentorganizationsforcareer-relevantexperiences,buteventhesehighlymotivatedstudentsarelargelylefttotheirowndevicestomatchthespecificskillstheygainwithpost-graduationemployment.Consequently,theyhavelittlereasontoconnecttheircareersuccesstotheirIllinoiseducation,whichinturnlimitsourfuturepoolofalumnidonors.Moreover,theresourcesavailabletoourhumanitiesstudentslagbehindthoseatourBigTenAcademicAlliancepeers,whereliberal-artsspecificcareerprogramming(includingbrandedcentersliketheLSAOpportunityHubatMichiganorSuccessWorksatUW-Madison)isthenorm.Accordingly,weareseekinganinvestmenttopromotethepracticalvalueofahumanitieseducation,enhanceemploymentpreparationandopportunitiesforhumanitiesstudents,andtherebyhelpmakeIllinoisaleaderinreversingthenationaltrendofdecliningenrollmentsinhumanitiesprograms.Currently,Illinois,likemanyofitspeerinstitutions,islosingmoneyonprogramsthatareessentialtoacomprehensivepublicland-grantuniversity.Wecannothopetofulfilloureducationalmissionortomaintainourrankingandpreeminenceamongnationalpublicuniversitieswithoutvibrantandsuccessfulhumanitiesprograms,whosevalueandserviceextendbeyondLAStotheentireuniversitypopulationandtothestateofIllinois.TheheartoftheproposedinitiativeisaHumanitiesProfessionalResourcesCenter(HPRC).HPRCwillprovidealandingpointforemployersandcorporatepartnersseekingstudentswiththeparticularskillsetsfosteredbytraininginthehumanities.ThisprogramwillbuildonthecurricularandcareerexplorationworkoftheexistingLASLife+CareerDesignLabandservestudentswhoseneedsarenotmetbythecampus-widefocusoftheCareerCenter.WewillextendtoallhumanitiesmajorsthecareerprogramsthathavealreadybeenshowntoincreasetheemploymentrateofEnglishandCreativeWritingmajorsandcreateadditionalresourcestofurtherincreasethesestudents’employability:

• individualhumanities-specificcareeradvisingandjob-huntingsupport(e.g.,strategysessionsondemonstratingcontentcreationskillsviasocialmedia,workshopsondevelopingwritingsamplesandportfolios)

• guidanceregardingexisting–andfuture–certificateprogramsinLASandthroughouttheuniversity(e.g.,Biohumanities,DataSciences,Informatics,PublicRelations,etc.)

• programmingtointroducehumanitiesmajorstothemanycareerpathsopentothem(talksbyprofessionals,fieldtripstorelevantbusinesses,workshopstodemystifyfieldsliketechsupport,recruiting,sales,projectmanagement,clientservices,humanresources,nonprofitmanagement)

• employeroutreachandcorporateengagementtargetedtocompaniesinneedofthecritical,analytical,andcommunicationskillsassociatedwithahumanitieseducation;

• careerfairopportunitiesandcoachingtohelphumanitiesstudentstakebetteradvantageoftheuniversity’scorporatepartnerships;

• alumnimentoringprogramsandanannualspeakers’seriestobringfivedistinguishedhumanitiesalumnibacktocampus(developedinconcertwithLASAdvancement);and

• avisiblepresencefortheIllinoishumanitiesonHandshakeandHireIllini,twoonlineplatformsthatconnectemployerstoIllinoisstudents.TheHumanitiesProfessionalResourcesCenterwillalsocoordinateexpandedinternshipopportunities.Humanitiesmajorswhoacquireadditionalcareer-specificskillsinthecourseoftheirliberalartseducationcandoublethenumberofjobopeningsavailabletothem.16Multiplepathwaysexistforstudentstoacquiretheseproficiencies,includinginternships,campusparaprofessionalprograms,research,andcertificateprograms.TheDepartmentofEnglishhasalreadybeguntodothiskindofworkforitsownmajors,placing10–20studentspersemesterinpaidorunpaidinternshipsinsettingsthatincludefaculty-editedacademicjournals,theRareBookandManuscriptLibrary,andtheBeckmanInstituteforAdvancedScienceandTechnology,aswellaswithcompaniesaffiliatedwiththeuniversity’sResearchPark.TheHPRCwillcurateandpromotesuchopportunitiesacrossallhumanitiesmajors,coachstudentsthroughtheapplicationprocess,andleveragetheseexistingrelationshipstocreatenew,additionalopportunities.Asonepartofthisendeavor,weproposeanexpansionoftheexistingATLASinternshipprogram,whichprovidestrainingandsupervisionforstudentstogainskillsrelatedtocontentstrategy,projectmanagement,documentation,andwebsitedevelopment.WewillexpandtheATLASprogramtocreateadditionalopportunitiesforstudentstogainteamworkandmanagerialskills,inadditiontotechnologicalcompetencies.ATLAShasalreadybegunreachingouttolocalemployersandcommunitypartnerstoplaceinterns,andthecoordinatorsforthisprogramwillhelptoturntheseinternshipsintoaconduitforcorporatepartnershipsandemployerrelations.Wearealsorequestingmoneytoofferstipendsandhourlywagetostudentinterns,inordertomaketheseprofessionalizingopportunitiesavailabletoallstudentsregardlessofSES.Thetruthabouttheskillshumanitiesstudentsdevelopandtheirsuccesshastobecommunicatedtoprospectivestudents,theirfamilies,donors,alumni,andcorporatepartners.TheHumanitiesProfessionalResourcesCenterwillcoordinatewithanadditionalLASmarketingandcommunicationsprofessionaltopromotetheskill-buildingrigorofhumanitiesclasses,conveytheinnovativeteachingandresearchthatinculcatethesehabitsofmind,demonstratetheprofessionalizingexperiencesavailabletoourstudents,andtellthesuccessstoriesofrecentalumni.ExpandedLAScommunicationsandmarketingwilldemonstrateacrossmultipleplatformsandtomanystakeholdersthatIllinoishumanitiesarecrucialtosuccess,notonlyforthestudentswhochoosetomajorinthemhere,butalsoforbusiness,technology,socialservices,education,media,thearts,government,andentrepreneurship,withinIllinoisandbeyond.

Needfortheinitiativeandimpactontheunits,college,anduniversity.

Despiteshrinkingfacultynumbersinthehumanities,thecostofinstructionhasrisensteadilybecauseofevensteeperdeclinesinthenumberofmajors.ThatincreasedcostisborneentirelybyLAS:ineffect,thedeclinemeansthathigherenrollmentsinotherLASunitsmustmakeupfortheincreasedcostsforhumanitiesunits,atatimewhentheLASbudgetasawholeisbeingcuteveryyear.Theentirecampus,however,dependsonthecoursesofferedbyLASingeneralandtoalargeextentbyitshumanitiesunitsinparticular.Theentirecampuslikewisestandstobenefitiftheteachingcapacityofthoseunitsisusedmoreefficiently.Moreover,asnotedabove,boththeuniversity’seducationalmissionanditsnationalrankingsdependuponmaintainingvibrantandsuccessfulhumanitiesprograms.Reducingfacultynumberstothepointwherehumanitiesunitsceasetobeviableisnotanacceptableoption.Amoreeffectivestrategyfortheunits,thecollege,andtheuniversityistoincreasehumanitiesenrollments.Prospectivestudentsarefrequentlydeterredfrommajoringinthehumanitiesbecausetheymistakenlybelievethesefieldswillnotpreparethemforemployment.Atpresenttheuniversitydoesalmostnothingtocounterthisbelief.Comparedtootherunits,LASingeneral,andthehumanitiesinparticular,arestarvedforresourcestoconveytheirvalue(seefiguresBandC).ThefamiliesofprospectivestudentsaregivennoclearandpersuasivepictureofanIllinoispathtosuccessthatbuildsontheirstrengths.Employersmissoutonaccesstodesirableinternsandemployees,becauseatpresentIllinoisoffersnoconduittoconnectthemtostudentswhoseaptitudesandinterestshaveledthemtomajorinthehumanities.

SustainabilityThethreeyearsofIGfundingwillcreatemomentumthatcanbesustainedatlowercostinsubsequentyears.KeytothatsustainedsuccesswillbetheHumanitiesProfessionalResourcesCenter.Inrecognitionofthatfact,LAShasagreedtocommittheincomefromanynetgaininhumanitiesmajors(currently$2.5Kisallocatedtothecollegepermajor)tocoverthecostofoperatingtheHPRC.Ifthatadditionalincomeexceedsthoseoperatingcosts,someofthesurpluscouldbeusedtosupportothercomponentsoftheproposedinitiative,asneeded.Weanticipatethattheseprogramswillyieldincreasedenrollmentsandnewrevenuestreams.Duringthefundedyears,ATLASstaffwillcontinuetoextenditsinternshipclientbaseintoprivateindustries,modelingasimilarexpansionoftheLAScommunicationsinternshipprogram.Theseprogramswillcreateapathwayforcorporateengagement,asweexplorenewformsoffinancialsupportandproposethatcompaniesfundtheseprogramsasearlytraininggroundforstudentspriortocorporateinternshipandrotationalmanagementprograms.Weexpecttheinternshipcomponentofthisprogramtobecomeself-supporting.Wealsoexpectthathumanities-specificemployerandalumnioutreachwillgeneratenewopportunitiesforcorporatepartnerstoinvestinourcareerdevelopmentprograms,throughcareerfairfees,employerevents,andotherkindsofsponsorships.Inthelongerterm,wecanexpecttheeffortweexpendnowtoyieldresultsingreateralumnigiving,asourhumanitiesalumnicredittheiryearsatIllinoisfortheirprofessionalsuccess.

INTRODUCTION

Manyresearchlibrarieshaverespondedtotheincreasinglydigitalnatureofresearchbyopeningdigitalscholarshipcenterswherecampusresearcherscangethelpwithtechnologicallyintensivemethods,findingdata,andcanconnectwithotherresearchersinterestedinthemethodstheyareusing.17TheLibrarywasanearlyadopterinthisarea,openingtheScholarlyCommonsin2010.In2012,theScholarlyCommonsmovedintoMainLibrary306andhasbeengraduallyexpandingitsservicessincethen.Atthetimeitopened,therewereonlyafewdigitalscholarshipcentersinlibraries,andthemainexemplarwastheScholar'sLabatUniversityofVirginia.18NowthereareoverahundreddigitalscholarshipcentersinNorthAmericanlibraries.ThemissionoftheScholarlyCommonshasalwaysbeentwofold:tohelpresearchersusingdigitalmethodsbyprovidingsoftware,training,andconsultations,andtocreateacommunityofdigitalscholarsacrosscampusregardlessofcollegeordepartment.ThelattergoalhasbeenchallenginginRoom306becauseitistoosmallforeventorexhibit

FindingsResponsestoseveralquestionsintheIthakaS+RUIUCFacultySurveyshedlightonfacultypracticesandattitudesregardingresearchcollaboration,andtheuseofdigitalresearchmethodologiesandtechnologies.Thereisstrongevidenceofresearchcollaborationonourcampus.Outof380totalfacultyrespondents,93%saidthattheyhavecollaboratedwithoneormoreotherscholarsonaresearchproject.Servicesandspacesthatsupportcollaborativeresearchworkwouldbebeneficialtoalargemajorityofcampusfaculty.Facultyarealsocollaboratingwithundergraduatesonresearchprojects.Outof173responses,20%indicatedthattheycollaborateregularlywithundergraduatesonresearchprojectstheylead,and21%indicatedthattheycollaboratesomewhatregularlywithundergraduates.Weshouldexpectthatthecollaboratorywillbeusedbyscholarsofalllevels,includingundergraduatestudents.Thefollowingpercentagesrepresentthefacultyrespondentswhosaidthatthesedigitaltechnologiesandmethodologieswerecurrentlyextremelyimportant(8-10ona10pointscale)orsomewhatimportant(4-7)totheirresearch:

• 72%indicatedthathelpunderstandinghowtheseresearchactivitiesandmethodologiescouldbethoughtfullyintegratedintotheirresearchwouldbeextremelyimportant.

• 79%indicatedthattechnicalsupportandadviceonimplementingdigitalresearchactivitiesandmethodologiesintotheirresearchwouldbeextremelyimportant.

Thisemphasizesthecriticalneedforwell-designedandimplementededucationalprogramsandservicestargetingfacultyaswellasstudents,andthatthecollaboratoryneedstoprovidereadyaccesstotechnology/methodologyexperts.Facultywouldbeveryreceptiveandinterested,andthissupportwouldencouragecampusresearcherstoexploreandintegratenewdigitalresearchmethodologies.IntheScholarlyCommonsspaceoverthepasttwoyears,abouthalfofthequestionsansweredbystaffwereeithersoftwareassistanceorscannerusequestions.Thesewerealmostentirelyinpersonquestions,whileconsultationstendtobeinitiatedby

email.ParticipantsinLibraryfocusgroupswereconcernedthatservicesinthespacewouldnotbevisible,turningthecollaboratoryintoa“glorifiedlounge.”Havingaprominentservicepointisthemostobvioussolutiontothispotentialproblem,andgraduateassistantsorstudentsconversantwiththetechnologyintheroomcouldstafftheservicepoint,withmorecomplexconsultationshandledbyappointmentastheyareintheScholarlyCommons.Eventsareoneofthemosteffectivewaysthatmostoftheotherdigitalscholarshipcenterswelookedatdooutreach.Whenfacultyandstudentshaveaspecificreasontoenterthespace,theydiscovertheservicesthatareavailableandseewhatkindsofworktheycandointhespace.Furthermore,eventscreatethevisibleactivitythatiscrucialforthesuccessofavibrant,collaborativespace.Well-plannedandpromotedeventswillalsofurtherthecollaboratory’smissionofbringingtogetherscholarsfromdiversedisciplinestocollaborateformallyorinformally.Forexample,ifafacultymemberfromAgriculturalEconomicsinterestedinGISmeetsahistoryprofessorataBirdsofaFeathergathering,theymaydiscovercommonresearchintereststhatcouldleadtoafruitfulinterdisciplinarycollaboration.RecommendationsforServicesandEvents

• Havearegularseriesofeventsplannedtostartassoonasthespaceopens:Thesewillbuildupontheprogrammingalreadyinplace(suchasthespecialtopicseminarsandDigitalScholarshipLunchn’Learndiscussions)andwillincludeacampusopenhouseandseminarreadinggroupsfocusingontopicsthatwillbringtogetherresearchersfrommultipledisciplines.Withadministrativesupport,thecollaboratorycouldhostsymposiaandconferences.Eventsadditionallycouldbesponsoredbyanylibraryunit,andmaybehostedbyresearchgroupsorothers,aslongastheyaredesignedtopromoteinterdisciplinarycollaborationordigitalscholarship.Interdisciplinarycollaborationinthiscontextmeansscholarsandstudentsfrommultipledisciplinesengaginginscholarlyactivity—anidealexamplewouldbethe“Interseminars”describedintheCreatingaHumanitiesCommonscampusreport,whichproposestheinterdisciplinaryInterseminarsas“‘idealabs’forfacultyandgraduatestudentsinthehumanitiesandartstobuildcommunitiesofinquiryaroundemergingresearchdirections,requiringdisciplinesandinterdisciplinestoconnectandexpand.”Similarendeavorsthatengagescholarsfromthesocialsciencesandscienceswiththehumanitiesarealsowelcome.

• WorkshopsareanimportantserviceoftheScholarlyCommons,notablymanifestedintheSavvyResearcherworkshopseriesandwillcontinuetobeheldinMainLibrary314.Thecollaboratorymaybeagoodvenueforsomeworkshops,becauseoftheflexiblespaceandthepotentialofhavingavisualizationwallavailable.

COLLABORATIONMODELS

Findings“Collaborations”referstobothcollaborationswithintheLibraryandoncampusthatmakerobustservicesinthecollaboratorypossible,andtothecollaborationsbetweenlibrariansandresearchersandamongresearchersthatweplantoencourage.TheScholarlyCommonsDigitalHumanitiesNeedsAssessmentStudyPreliminaryReporthighlightedthechallengesofinterdisciplinaryresearchoncampus,basedoninterviewswith15humanitiesscholars.Thesescholarsalsosuggestedthatlibraryspaceandeventswouldbeanimportantwaytoencouragecollaborationsamongscholars.Furthermore,theIthacaFacultySurveyfoundthat41%offacultyrespondentscollaboratewithundergraduatesonresearchprojectregularlyorsomewhatregularly.Ourfacultyadvisorygroupstressedthataneutralspacewhereresearcherscanencountereachotherinrandomwaysisneededoncampus.OpenGroundsattheUniversityofVirginiawasmentionedspecificallyasacollaborativespace,thoughitisnotinthelibrary(http://opengrounds.virginia.edu/).Thespacehastechnology,whiteboards,andacoupleofstaffwhocansupportthetechnologyinthespaceandaretrainedtofacilitatecollaboration.AttheBerkeleyInstituteforDataScience,graduatefellowshaveworkspaceinthepublicareaandcaninteractwitheachotherandusersofthespaceinformally,aswellasparticipatingintheeventshostedbytheInstitute(https://bids.berkeley.edu/).Thedigitalscholarshipcenterssurveyedbythecollaboratorygroupallusedrobustpartnershipsasessentialpartoftheirservices,includingwithcentralreferencedepartments,iSchools,writingcenters,andITdepartments.ManypartnershipsarealreadyinplaceintheScholarlyCommons,butnewpossibilitieswillariseforthecollaboratory.Forexample,I-CHASShasbeenapartneronalldayworkshopsaboutdigitalhumanitiesandcomputationalsocialscience,butmaybeabletobringtheirprojectplanningconsultationsintothecollaboratory.AnothersuggestionfromthefacultywastopartnerwiththeGrandChallengescourses,andeventuallyconsiderofferingacourseindigitalresearchmethods.Whenweaskedlibrariansandstaffabouthowtheywouldliketobeinvolvedinthecollaboratory,eachgroupexpressedaninterestinworkingwiththespaceandtechnologyinsomecapacity.Severallibrarianshavetheireyeontheeventspaceforinstructionorevents,andsomehaveskillsthattheycancontributetothecollaboratory’sservices.Theystressedtheimportanceofmakingthecollaboratorywelcomingnotonlytothem,buttotheirusersnomatterthedisciplinetheycomefrom.Thisissuearosefromthespecificmentionofthehumanitiesinthegroup’scharge,butthegroupdoesnotintendtousethe

charge’stitleasthenameofthespaceandisdiscussingarecommendationforthenamethatwouldbeinclusiveofalldisciplines.Also,theScholarlyCommons’partnershipwiththeIDEALabatGraingerandtheMediaCommonsintheUndergraduateLibraryneedstotransfertothecollaboratoryandbestrengthened,particularlyasweshapewhatitmeanstobeanodeintheDesignLearningnetworkthatisdevelopingoncampus.RecommendationsforCollaborations

• Includefeaturesandconfigurations--suchascollaborationrooms,reconfigurablefurniture,whiteboards,andaccessibleoutlets--sothatthecollaboratoryisafriendlyplacetomeetforresearchgroupsaswellasforlibrariansandtheirusers.

SPACE

FindingsKeythemesaboutthedevelopmentofspacerevolvedaroundaudiences,theusabilityofthespace,andthedifferenttypesofactivitiesenvisionedforthespace.IntheScholarlyCommonsinterimDHNeedsAssessmentReport,campusrespondentsexpressedtheneedforspaceandtechnologytolearnnewtechnicalskillssotheycanpursuedigitalhumanitieswork.TheyalsosuggestedspacewherefacultyworkingonsimilarDHprojectscouldmeetandshareideas.AnotherchallengewasfindinghelptostartaDHproject.Facultyfeelthattherearealotofoptionsoncampusbutdon'tknowwheretostart.ThereportalsorecommendsthattheLibrarydevelopspacesandprogrammingthatencourageinnovativeuseofdigitizedcollectionsandLibraryresources.InthediscussionswithLibrarydivisions,eachofthedivisionsexpressedaninterestinworkingwithinthecollaborationspaceinsomecapacity.Questionsabounded,however,aboutthemannerandmechanismsbywhichlibraries,subjectspecialists,andfunctionalspecialistswouldengagethespaceandwhetherornottheirpatrongroupswouldfeelwelcomeusingit.MembersoftheFacultyAdvisoryCommitteesharedseveralobservationsandthoughtsonhowakeyelementofaneffectivespacedesignistheembeddingofdifferenttypesofworkandactivity.Onerespondentnotedthat"ithastobekindofaworkerspacewithsawdustonthefloor.AttheFablab,youknowimmediatelythatit’sinuse.Therearestudentsbuzzingaround."Theactiveandvisibleuseofthespacewasacriticalthemethatemergedrepeatedlythroughoutconversationsandfeedback:onecommitteemembernotedthat“spaceenablesflexibleprogramming….Differentpeopleneeddifferentthings,somulti-modalthings.Evenifit’skindofmessy,havingpeople’sprojectsonthewall.”Thevisibilityofin-progressandinterimworkinthespacewasalsodescribedasamotivatingfactorbyanotherfaculty“Theun-erasedideasofotherpeopleareimportantvisually.Labsthatarefunctionalworkingspaces,therearepeoplethatnaturallygothere.”

Collaborationinfrastructureinthespacewasanothereffectiveelement,asonefacultynotedthat“Withagroupitisreallyimportantforeveryonetosee.Wecouldusesmartboardsandmorelargemonitorswherepeoplecanputandshareinformationforcollaboration.”Theyalsosuggestedspacewherefacultyworkingonsimilarprojectscouldmeetandshareideas.Othercommentsfromthefacultyadvisorycommitteeaboutmakingworkvisibleincludedsuggestionsforanartgallery-likedisplayoffacultyresearchanddigitalcollections.Inanenvironmentalscanofexternalpeerinstitutions,wefoundthatacrossthelandscapeofacademiclibrariesinNorthAmerica,thereareanabundanceofspacesandservicesthatcouldserveasinspirationsforthisproject.Amongthetrendsevidentinthesespacesare:

• Convenientandprominentlocation–thesespacesarefrontandcenterinlibrarybuildings,thusprovidingeasyaccesstotheservices,technologiesandexpertslocatedwithinthem;

• Flexiblespace–thesespacesfrequentlyemploymovablewallswithveryfewhavinganypermanentinternalwalls,furnitureonwheels,andspacesthatcanbeusedformanydifferentpurposes;

• Integration–servicesprovidedinthesespacesarecomingfrommanydifferentlibraryunitsordepartments,oftenwithcampuspartnersfromoutsideofthelibrary.

RecommendationsforSpace:

• Haveanopenspacewithlongerhours(e.g.,thebulkofOhioState'sResearchCommonsbecomesanopenstudyspaceafter"business"hoursofthecommonsareover).

• Bright,vibrant,open,andflexiblespace(e.g.,moveableandadjustablewallsandfurniture);

• Accommodatesmanytypesofuse(e.g.,reservableworkstations,offices,andcollaborationrooms);

• Makeactivitiesvisibleandhavegoodvisibilitythroughoutthespace,sothattheworkgoingonthereisseenbyeveryoneelseinthespaceeventhoughtheyarenotparticipatingorhearingwhatgroupsandindividualsaredoing;

• Makesureitdoesn'tturnintoalounge,butrather,haveaninteractivespacewithcomfortableseating-seedwithactivitiesandevents,constantchurnofthingsgoingon;servicepointforreferralsandtechnicalhelp;

• Makesurethespacedoesnotfeelconstrainedtoscholarsandactivitiesfromonlyoneorafewdisciplines,butisparticularlywelcomingtosocialscienceanddigitalhumanitiesresearchersandstudentsinacknowledgingtheirneedsandworkpractices.

TECHNOLOGYFindingsThegatheredinformationandfindingsfoundthatwhilethereareseveralspecificrecommendationsoftypesoftechnologyinthespace,thekeythemesfocusedonmoreusabilityofthetechnology,abilitytointegratethetechnologywiththeirwork,andhowusersdesirearelativelylowlearningcurveforpickingupandusingthetechnology.AccordingtotheScholarlyCommons'reportstheunitansweredalittleover1000referencequestionseachyear(1321and1,055respectively,andthemajoritywereaboutsoftwareassistance(around300forFY15and166forFY16)andscanneruse(around200forFY15and115forFY16).Theheavyuseofscannersandsoftwaredemonstratesthatthecollaboratoryspaceneedstohavethefullrangeofsoftwaredemandedbyfacultyandstudentsaswellsufficientscannerstomeetcurrentandfutureneeds.TheneedfortechnologyandassistancewithitwasalsonotedintheYearofCyberinfrastructurereport.SoftwareandservicestosupportalloftheactivitiesmentionedintheIthakaFacultySurvey(seeServicessectionabove)shouldbeincludedinCollaboratoryplans,withthecaveatthatthisalsoincludesrespondentsfromdisciplinessuchasengineeringandcomputerscience,whosetechnicalneedsmaynotbewithinthescopeofthisparticularspace.Also,theuseofqualitativedataanalysistoolsandmethodswasnotmeasuredbythissurvey,soitcannotbeusedtogaugetheneedsandinterestoffacultyinthisarea.IntheLibraryfocusgroups,participantsnotedthatformanydisciplinesandunitsespeciallyinsciencesandsocialsciences,digitalscholarshipisnotnew.Insomeareas,however,thereisincreasingdemandforservicesandaccesstotechnologiesandservices.Forexample,manylinguistsrequireaccesstolinguisticcorpora,whichrequiresbothaccesstocorporaandstorageofaudioandvideofiles.Inareastudies,thereisincreasingdemandforaccesstocorporaofliteratureinnon-romanlanguages.Theseareoftendifficulttoobtainandrequirespecializedsoftwarethatcansearch,parse,andmanipulatenon-romanlanguagesproperly.Itwasalsosuggestedtoconsiderhavingworkstationsthatfeatureprivacyenhancingtechnologies,asmanyofourscholarsdoresearchonsensitivetopics.Librarystaffalsoemphasizedthatweneedsustainableplanformaintaining/updatingtechnology.StaffsuggestedthatwelookattheIDEALabandthethingstheyhavesetup--inpreliminaryresearchfortheIDEALab,theyfoundthatthehigh-endtechnologywithasteeplearningcurvewasquicklyabandoned,apointthatwasconfirmedbyotherdigitalscholarshipcenters.TheIDEALabhastableswithmounteddisplays,asdoestheGeorgiaTechCurvespace.Afacultymemberalsosuggestedtechnologythatwouldallowpeopletocommunicatebetweenspaces(e.g.,Stacksandaclassroom)andsharematerialswithtechnology:LibrarianscoulddoinstructionwithclassesspreadaroundtheLibrarycollections.Ininformationalinterviewswithpeerinstitutionswithdigitalscholarshipcentersandcommons,theinstitutionssharedrecommendationsthattechnologyberelativelylightweight.Severalnotedthatthesespacesdon'tnecessaryneedafullcomputerlab,butratherwhiteboardsandlighttechnology--thingsthatareeasytouseandwellsupported.Anotherobservationsharedwiththemthatit’simportanttohavesomeonewhocanshowpeoplehowtousethesoftware,andhavetoolsthatarerelativelyeasytolearn.Several

emphasizedthatusersdon'tnecessarilywanttechnologythattakeslotsoftrainingortimetolearn,andit’sidealtohavetechnologythatiseasytolearnandinteroperable(plugandplay).Ifthespacedoeshavehighendtechnologysuchasavisualizationwall,theintervieweesstronglyrecommendedthattherebedefinitebuy-infromIT.Membersofthefacultyadvisorycommitteereiteratedtheideaofalow-endlearningcurve.Asoneadvisorycommitteememberobserved,“Thetechnologiesdon’talwayshavetobefancy….Letnewerusersbuildupexperience.”Facultyalsowantspaceandtechnologytolearnnewtechnicalskillssotheycanpursuedigitalhumanitieswork,butseveralfacultymembersputlessemphasisonspecifictools,butratherhowthetechnologiescanbeincorporatedintheirwork.Asonefacultymemberdescribed,itis“lessaboutfeaturingthetechnologythanbuildingupliteracy.”Thefacultymembersalsosuggestedthinkingoutoftheboxaboutpossibletechnologiestoprovide:OnesuggestedhavingtoolstoprojectmaterialsfromtheStacksorRareBookandManuscriptLibrarytoaclassroom,suchasusingGoProcamerasthatenabledstudentstostreamvideoofmaterialsfromStackswithcollaboratorssittinginareadingroom.RecommendationsforTechnology

• Providebasictechnologiesforcollaboration:largesharedscreens,whiteboards,projectors

• Provideinteroperabletoolsandlightertechnologiesthatpeoplecan“plugandplay”–largescreens,reserve-abledesks,andworkstations.

STAFFING

FindingsThegroup’schargespecifiedthatthereshouldbelittleornostafffootprintinRoom220.Thisportionofthechargecausedmuchconsternationamongthegroup,thelibrarystaffwetalkedto,andinthefacultyadvisorycommitteemeeting.Whileitisindisputablyimportantthatthevastmajorityofthespacebeuserspace,severalfactorsindicatethatsomestaffpresenceisimportanttothesuccessofthecollaboratoryspace.First,expertiseisanimportantpartofwhatwillhappeninthecollaboratoryifwearegoingtoavoidthescenarioofanicelounge.Whileresearcherscanconnectwitheachother,staffandpartnersaretheretohelp.Withmanyreserve-ablespaces,someoneneedstobenearbytohelpwithreservations.CurrentlyabouthalfofthequestionstheScholarlyCommonsrecordsinDeskTrackerareabouttechnologyinthespace,andthesequestionsareavastmajorityoftheinpersonquestions.Weexpecttohaveevenmorequestionsabouttechnologyinabiggerspacewithmoreuse.Havingsomeoneinthespacealsoprovidesanobviouswayforuserstoconnecttotheexpertswhocanhelpthem.Thismeansthatwhoeverisstaffingthespaceneedsthoroughtraininginournetworkofexpertiseandhowtomakegoodreferrals,aswellasgeneralsoftwaretroubleshootingandscannertroubleshooting.Further,beingthefirstservicepointforanyonecominguptheWright

StreetstairswouldmeanstaffneedachunkoftrainingondirectionalandgeneralquestionsabouttheMainLibrary.TheScholarlyCommonsisestablishingitselfasaplacetobringquestionsatthebeginningofaproject,whenyouarenotevensurewhattoask,andwewouldlikethatroletocontinueinthecollaboratory.Anotheraspectofhavingstaffinthespaceismakingsurethatthespaceissetupforalllibrarystafftoworkwithusersthere.Subjectspecialistscouldmakeappointmentswiththeirusersinreservedportionsofthespace,orarrangetomeetwithauserandafunctionalspecialisttotalkthroughanissuethatrequiresmorethanoneperson’sexpertise.Librariansandpartnersfromaroundcampuscouldholdofficehoursinthespaceaswell,emphasizingitsroleasahubforresearchhelpandcollaboration.Also,weexpecttheadministrativeworkthatsupportsScholarlyCommonseventsandservicestoincreaseexponentiallyinthecollaboratory.ThecollaboratorywillbeopenallhourswhentheLibraryisopen,andeventcoordinationandpromotionworkwillbeagoodportionofsomeone’spositionastheuseoftheeventspaceincreases.Thedetailsofwhenexperthelpwillbeavailableinthespacehavenotbeendecidedyet,butschedulingisalsosuretobemorecomplicatedwithmorespaceandmorestafftobescheduled.Weplantoproposeafulltime,permanentpositiontotakeonthesedutiesaswellastohireandsuperviseanystudentsthatstaffthespace.RecommendationsforStaffing

CHALLENGESFindingsAnumberofpotentialchallengesemergedinourearlyanalysisthatweshouldconsiderinthedevelopmentofthecollaboratoryspace:TheDHNeedsAssessmentReportfoundthatonechallengeoncampusisdevelopingon-campuscollaboration.Otherrespondentsfeltthatinter-disciplinaryresearchandteachingarebeingstressedbycampusadministration,buttheyprovidelittlesupportforit.Thepreliminaryreportsuggeststhatthelibraryhosteventssothatpeoplecanconnecttooneanother.TheLibrarycouldalsoserveasahubforservicessupportinginterdisciplinarywork.IntheLibraryfocusgroups,someparticipantsfearedthatthecollaboratorywillsimplyprovideanotherlayerofcomplexitytoanalreadyburdenedreferralsystem.Willthisspaceenhanceorthwartreferralstoappropriatespecialists?Othersexpressedaconcernforattachingadisciplinarynametoaspacethatshouldbeopentothewholecampuscommunity:Theynotedthatscholarsinfromthelifesciences,ACES,UrbanPlanning,orEducationmaynotfeelwelcomeorabletousethisspaceiftheyarenotwithinatraditionalhumanitiesorsocialsciencesdiscipline.Someleadersofpeerinstitutions’digitalscholarshipcentersreportedhavingtobeconstantlyworkingtobringpeopleandgroupsintothespace,whileothers(suchasOhio)havesuchafullyloadedspacethatafteraninitialefforttheyarenowhavingtoturnpeopleawaybecausetheyarefullybooked.Othernotablechallengesinclude:

• ArrangingandworkingwithITsupportforallofthetechnologyinthespaceanddevelopingrelationshipssimilartothatwiththeGraingerIDEALabandMediaCommons;

• Avoidoverlyprescribedspaceandtooluse:Thespaceshouldbedesignedtobeeasilyandflexiblyreconfiguredfordifferenttypesofactivities.Somespacescanbefocusedcollaborativespaceswithwallsand/ortechnologiestomufflesounds,butstillhaveopensightlinesforvisibilityandflexibility.

AppendixD.DataonAreaStudiesCentersImpactonCampus(Funds,Activities,PublicsEngaged)(Excerptedfrom“AreaStudiesandThematicProgramsTaskForceReport,”submittedtocampusleadershipbytheDirectorsoftheCentersonFebruary12,2018)Since2006,thecampus’thematicandareasstudiescenterscontributedonaverageover$4.7milliondollarsannuallytotheuniversitythrough$56milliondollarsinexternalfundingthatsupportsinternationalresearch,training,andengagement(SeeTable1).NearlyallofthefundsgeneratedbytheCentersaredirectlyinvestedinthecampusintheformoffacultycurriculardevelopment/researchgrantsandsalarysupportforaselectnumberofclassesordirectlyaidstudentsintheformoffellowshipsandassistantships.Centersupportisdistributedacrosscampustosupportfacultyandstudentsinthehumanitiesandsocialsciences,scienceandtechnology,andprofessionalprograms.Figure1providesanetworkmapviewoftheflowofAY17Centerfundingthatconnectedninecollegesin36unitsinaninterdisciplinarynetworkaroundarea,thematic,andglobalstudies.Asidefromrepresentingsignificantfundingforfaculty,student,andcoursesupport,themapshowstheextensiveconnectionsfacilitatedbytheCenters.EachCenteroperatesasanodeforbringingtogetherfacultyandstudentsinuniqueconfigurationsthatformresearchandteachingopportunitiesthatcan’tbereplicatedbyothermeans.TheflowofinterdisciplinaryconnectionsinAY17aloneresultedin43campusgrants–23forcoursedevelopmentand20forresearchandcoursedevelopmenttraveltofacultyfrom20differentdepartmentsacrosssevencollegesandschools.Thetotalamountofthesegrantswas$172,928.Inaddition,theCentersdirectlypaidforinstructionalcostsin89coursesin17differentdepartmentswithtotalattendanceof1,037students.Duringthissametimeperiod,theCentersalsoprovided71AYfellowshipstograduatestudentsandemployedanadditional58graduatestudents(34RA/GA-shipsand24hourlypositions).TheCentersalsoprovidedAYscholarshipsforadvancelanguageandareastudiestrainingto24undergraduatestudents.In2016-17theCenterscontributedfundsforlibraryacquisitions($44,469);financedlectures,conferences,andsymposia($140,000)andbroughtarangeofspeakerstocampus($192,000).WithouttheCenters’externalresources,departments,schools,andcollegeswouldhavetofundtheseactivitiesoutoftheirownresources–orsimplynotofferthesecourses,publicevents,andstudentsupport.PublicEngagementhasbeenacorefocusfortheareastudiesandthematicCentersaspartofanongoingmissiontosupporttheuniversity’sgoalofmakingsignificantandvisiblesocialimpacts.Tothisend,theCentersexpendconsiderableresourcesoncommunityoutreachtostudentsandinstructors/administratorsfromK-12institutions,communitycolleges,andminority-servinginstitutionsaroundthestateofIllinois.Thisoutreachtakesmanyforms,includingprofessionaldevelopmentworkshopsforK-14instructors,educationaleventsforK-12students(bothonandoffcampus),andcurriculumdevelopment/travelgrantsforinstructors/administratorsfromCCs/MSIs.
