Gametogenesis (Oogenesis)

• Oogonia produced during fetal life

• Prior to birth, some oogonia enter Meiosis

and are now primary oocytes

• Primary oocytes become surrounded by a

layer of follicular cells

• Primary follicle = primary oocyte +

follicular cells

Menopause

Cessation of normal ovarian function

• Oocytes cease developing

• Hormone levels fall

• Ovulation stops

• Menstrual cycles stop
