Allegheny and Pocono Mountains. Rich, fertile valleys

Survival!

Resources were used to build shelters, for tool making and hunting and fishing

Nomadic lifestyle….moved around in search of food.

3,000 years ago Native Americans began to plant their own crops(agriculture)

Three Sisters – planting corn, beans squash in same hole

1600’s … PA Native American GroupsThere were two groups of Native Americans in

Pennsylvania

1. Algonquian- which included the Lenni Lenapi and Shawnee

2. Iroquois- which included the Susquehannock and Iroquois .

The groups shared similar language and way of life.

LENNI LENAPE

Facts:

Also known as the “Delaware”Lived along the banks of the Brandywine

and Delaware RiversLived in longhousesKnown for their fairnessForced off their land by other tribes.Part of the Algonquian group

Shawnee

Facts:

Called the Lenni Lenape their grandfathers

Lived in longhousesLived by the Susquehanna RiverCrops planted by womenMen hunted and fishedMade potteryPart of the Algonquian group

Iroquois

Facts:

Lived in longhousesTo end fighting among themselves they

formed Iroquois League of Five Nations to form rules for everyone to follow.

Became the most powerful group of Native Americans in North America

Our Constitution is based on their rules.Used wampum

Susquehannock Tribe

Facts:

• Lived in Longhouses•Built palisades for protection•Always at war…couldn’t stay together•Died out by 1763• An Iroquois group
