LETS TAKE A LOOK AT HOW TEENAGERS ARE REPRESENTED IN ‘MEAN GIRLS’
The Typical Characters
“The Jocks”
This is more of an American convention for Teenage films but
they widely seen amongst this genre.
Typically, jocks are seen as being dumb or the most popular
jock will be the popular one.
“The Girls Who Eat Their Feelings”
They are generally made fun of by the
popular teens and are seen as the victims.
They are portrayed as vulnerable and not
being able to stand up for themselves.
Also, they seen as being jealous of the
popular teens and are self-conscious.
“The Girls Who Don’t Eat Anything”
They too are critical of their self image and
want to be like the popular ones.
“Desperate Wannabes”
Much like the other two types of
characters, they too want to be like the
popular teens.
“The Rebellious or Different Ones”
They are very different to the other
types of characters as they are rather
critical of the other people.
They believe that everyone tries too
hard and think they are very different to
others.
“The Plastics”
Otherwise known as the popular ones.
Everyone wants to be like them.
They believe that they are above everyone else and no one can match up to their
standards.
They are very self confident and its all
about appearances for them.
Lets take a closer look into the typical characters.
This character is usually seen as ‘the victim’ or ‘the innocent one’
Usually the protagonist, we see the narrative from
her perspective. She may be new and is
taken under the wing of the rebellious
teens because they don’t want her to be
influenced by the others. Although, the
popular teens may try to take her under their wings because they can essentially mould her into the
person they want her to be and make her into one of them.
This character is the ‘Queen Bee’ and is the popular one. Everyone wants to be her or
know her.
Everyone wants to be like her and she generally makes herself look as if she’s royalty in
comparison to other people. Even though
people want to be like her, deep down, they don’t like her because they know
she isn’t a nice person. It most
probably takes the protagonist or the rebellious teens to make everyone see sense and to reveal
her true colours.
This character is the desirable boy which every girl wants to
date.
Every girl wants him to be her boyfriend but
he is ordinarily dating the queen bee because
its all about the two most popular teens in
the school coming together to form a
‘power couple.’ He will usually fall for the
protagonist because he sees her nice and kind side. Due to this, there is competition between the queen bee and the protagonist. Although,
the protagonist generally gets the boy,
hence the happy ending or ‘happily ever
after.’
