6 Models of Blended Learning
Face-to-face teachers deliver most of the curricula
Teachers use online resources to supplement or remediate
Often in back of classroom or in lab
Model #1: Face-to-Face Driver
For each course, students rotate on fixed schedule between online and F2F
"In between" Sometimes online part is remote Often same teacher for online and F2F
Model #2: Rotation
Online platform delivers most curricula F2F teachers provide flexible, as-needed
support Individual tutoring, small group discussions
Model #3: Flex
Online platform delivers the entire course, but in brick/mortar lab or classroom
Usually Online teachers Paraprofessionals often supervise
Model #4: Online Lab
Individual students take online courses a la carte
Online learning is remote Traditional learning is brick/mortar
Model #5: Self-Blend
online platform and teacher deliver all curricula
Students work mostly remotely F2F check-ins are optional or required
Model #6: Online Driver

Iowa has emphasized supplemental programs for school districts, rather than a full-time online school.
Currently there are discussions underway to explore possible increases in online opportunities for students on a statewide level.
Online Efforts in Iowa
On a district level, there are online/blended opportunities occurring, but it is difficult to track all of these.
• The 1:1 laptop initiative is driving many of these local efforts. Estimates from Iowa State University predict that in the 2011-2012 school year, up to 100 of Iowa’s 350 school districts will have launched a 1:1 initiative.
Online Efforts in Iowa
On the statewide level, there are three major online initiatives:
– Iowa Learning Online– Kirkwood High School Distance Learning– Iowa AEA Efforts
Online Efforts in Iowa
• Works as a clearinghouse to help Iowa school districts expand learning opportunities for their high school students through general, Advanced Placement, and credit recovery courses delivered "at a distance" using technologies such as the Internet and interactive video classrooms connected to the Iowa Communications Network (ICN).
• Students enroll in ILO courses through their local school district. Each student is supported locally by a student coach—a school employee, such as a school counselor, teacher or paraprofessional.

Kirkwood HSDL has existed for over 30 years, and has been previously known as the high school correspondence program. • In 2003, the program launched an online physics course using Kirkwood’s e-learning platform with a self-developed course. • In 2007, Kirkwood HSDL purchased content from Apex learning to offer online courses. Currently, Kirkwood HSDL offers over 40 semester-length courses led by highly-qualified facilitators in a self-
paced flexible start format
