Section 7 Definitions Ionic Compound Ionic Bond Chemical Formula Formula Unit

Forming Ionic Compounds IONIC COMPOUND:

Compounds composed of cations and anions Usually metal cation

and nonmetal anion Ionic compounds are

electrically neutral

The positive cation attracts the negative anion IONIC BONDS: The electrostatic force that

holds ionic compounds together Na has one v.e. and Cl has 7 v.e.

When they form a compound, Na gives up it’s one v.e. to Cl, forming Na +; Cl gained that v.e., becoming Cl -

Combine in 1:1 ratio Na + Cl = NaCl

Ex.: Li + Br

The chemical formula of an ionic compound shows the lowest amount of ions needed to make a “balanced or neutral” compound

This is called a FORMULA UNIT The smallest whole-

number ratio of ions in a formula

Ionic compounds are not separate things like molecules but continuous arrays of ions

Ionic Compound Properties Most are crystalline solids at room temp Crystals have repeating, 3-dimensional patterns When dissolved in water, ionic compounds

break up into cations and anions Water molecules keep them apart

Typically have high melting points due to strong attractive forces

Ionic compounds conduct electricity when dissolved in water Used as electrolytes
