Who are Chepang?

-Nepal’s most disadvantaged indigenous semi nomadic tribes who are classified under the ‘highly marginalized’ category on the basis of a set of socio-economic indicators (population size, language literacy rate, house type, landownership, occupation and access to higher education).

Total Population: 68,399

Female: 33779/ Male: 34620

Literacy rate: 36.10%

Population by Mother tongue: 48476

Language family: Sino Tibetan

Religious view: Animism (Population census CBS,2011)

Media Coverage in National Daily: Chepangs Still living in Cave

Geographical difficulties: It takes 6 hours walk to reach village as and it is same for all Chepangs

Self Sustaining Campaign for Chepang Communityan initiation to work for the welfare of my Community

Self Sustaining campaign is an initiation of a group of 13 members led by Mr. Biswash Praja (Chepang) as project manager, Mr. Bhola Shrestha, Ruskin Gautam (USA) as Advisor and 2 IT Technicians(USA) and 9 Chepang members headed by local representative in local level. Self Sustaining Campaign works to uplift and show the direction to sustain their life through live stock entrepreneurship development, social business through making herbal products and similar projects as per the need of society.

The projects I have carried out

1. Earthquake relief to Chepang Community; 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake victims were given relief package by Biswash Chepang benefitting 90 families which comprised 540 individuals.

2. Poultry Farming as a immediate income generation Activities to 40 Families to earn for their livelihood

Distribution of recently hatched chickens to Chepang family to make earning for themselves and fulfill daily basic needs

3. “One Child= One Sponsor project” We have supported 15 dropout school Children’s for continuation of Education

4. Livestock Entrepreneurship Development through Pig farming to support their family as well as their Childs Education for 15 Families

5. Solar Lamp and Battery distribution to 48 household which have now allowed children to study during night time as well.

6. Warm Winter Drive I: Distributing reusable warm clothes to 100 Chepang families

7. Warm Winter Drive II: Reusable warm clothes distribution to 100 Chepang families

8. Empowering Chepang women in making Herbal Product through stinging nettle

9. Social entrepreneurship at Chepang community: establishing retail store- under construction

There are more than 68,000 Chepang who are lost in transitional phase in this 21st centuary. We need some one who will rise from that community and work for the their welfare
