Cherry FactsWI ranks #4Cherries grow on treesThere are cherry orchardsTakes 4-5 years before a tree can produce enough cherries for harvestFebruary is National Cherry MonthAverage American eats 1lb tart cherries/year250 cherries = 1 pie

Growing CherriesWinter: nutrients stored in the roots

Farmers cut off weak branches to keep the tree strong and produce more berries

Early Spring: buds on the cherry trees swell and turn green (new trees are planted too)May: the buds blossom into white cherry blossom flowersSummer: bees visit the blossoms and pollinate them

Petals fall off and leave behind green bud that will ripen

Late June: cherry remains green, but with the rain it begins to show reddish color

Growing CherriesJuly: Harvesting season!!!!

Machines with upside-down umbrellas shake the cherries off the tree into a tarpThe cherries are transferred (with a conveyor belt) to tanks of 45 degree water The cherries are kept in the water for several hours with the water being constantly flushedMachines remove the stems and pits from the cherries and then processed into the final product
