THEFEUDAL GAME

SERFS

Your Mission: Work hard.

• If you work hard, you will receive 3 muffins.–You keep 1 muffin.–You give 1 muffin to a knight.–You give 1 muffin to the noble.

KNIGHTS

Your Mission: Protect your land.

• If Mr. Booms comes dressed as a Viking, you may use your “sword” to swat him below the the neck / above the waist.• Do not let a Viking steal your

riches!

NOBLES Your Mission: Make

sure that everything runs smoothly in your

land.

• Make sure your peasants are working hard, and make sure your knights are defending the land.

• If you collect a surplus of muffins (4+), you may sell 3 of your muffins to earn 1 coin.

• If Mr. Booms comes dressed as a king and demands a tax, you must pay the tax.

KING

Your Mission: Collect enough tax to raise a true army.

• Collect tax from the nobles.

VIKING

Your Mission: Get rich!

• Attack the kingdoms of Western Europe and steal riches!

In order to protect yourself, you need to build a…

Mr. Booms at Burg Eltz in Germany

Your Task

• Today, your team will create a paper castle.

• You will label each part of the castle.

Your Challenge

• You must build the castle faster than the Vikings can destroy your castle with a catapult!

Will you be ready when I besiege your castle?

Drum tower

• You need to build drum towers… inside here, you will hide archers who will be ready to fire arrows at me!

Arrowslit

• You will need to create arrowslits in each of your drum towers… archers will fire arrows through these holes.

Arrowslit

Curtain Wall with Battlements• You will need

to build curtain walls. At the top of each wall, you need to construct tooth shapes called battlements. Your soldiers can stand on the wall, look down, and still be protected.

Curtain Wall with Battlements

Moat

• In order to attack the castle, I will cross the moat. I won’t tunnel under it because the tunnel would flood!

Drawbridge

• Hopefully, you will leave your drawbridge open so that I can cross the moat and enter the castle!

Gatehouse

• The first building I will enter is the gatehouse.

Portcullis

• Hopefully, you leave the portcullis up so that I can enter the gatehouse!

Murder Holes• Once inside the

gatehouse, I will be sure to look up! I will need to watch out for the holes in the ceiling from which you drop harmful substances down on me! These substances might include rocks, arrows, scalding water, hot sand, quicklime, tar, or boiling oil!

Bailey• As I exit the

gatehouse, I’ll step into the bailey. This is much like Valor’s courtyard between the 5th and 6th grade classes. Here’s where the siege turns into a battle…

Keep

• Finally, the most important part of the castle! You need to build a keep. This is where the castle residents would go if enemies broke through the castle walls.

Your Task

• Today, your team will create a paper castle.

• You will label each part of the castle.

• Be creative. Add a moat and a drawbridge!

Your Challenge

• You must build the castle faster than the Vikings can build a catapult to attack your castle!

Homework

• On a separate sheet of paper, you will create your own 2-D castle. You must label all of the parts! It must be creative and colorful. Make sure that NO ONE can break into this castle!
