CHRISTMAS TREE
Christmas Tree is decorated on Christmas
Eve with glass baubles,
homemade ornaments and lights. On the
top of the tree there is a star or a top
piece.
CHRISTMAS EVE SUPPER
(December 24th)
The supper begins with the appearance of the FIRST STAR as
the rememberance of the Bethlehem star.
We put bits of HAY under the tablecloth and …
…some MONEY under the plates for prosperity in the coming
year.
An EMPTY PLATE is left at the table for the Baby Jesus
or a wanderer.(this is my living room with the Christmas Eve table setting)
The supper begins with
the breaking of the WAFER
as the symbol of the unity
with Christ.
CHRISTMAS EVE DISHESTraditionally, there should be
TWELVE DISHES as the sybmol of twelve apostles. Nowadays, the
number of dishes is smaller.(this is Christmas Eve table setting at my home)
There is no meat eaten on Christmas Eve.
In the region of Silesia we eat:• fish soup
• beetroot soup
• carp
and as a dessert:
• ‘makowki ‘ – made of poppy seeds, white loaf, raisins,
almonds, walnuts, sugar, milk and cinnamon.
• ‘moczka’ – made of gingerbread, different kinds of compote and dried fruit and
nuts.
• compote of dry fruits
Children make various shaped gingerbreads.
(I have made these ones this year)
After the Christmas Eve supper , the
family gathers around the Christmas
tree to open the presents
and sing carols.
