Chronic Wasting Disease Herd Certification Program

Voluntary Program Participation is Free of Charge Required by Federal Code to participate in

interstate commerce Participants must have all deaths over 12

months of age sampled and tested for CWD In Oklahoma sampling can only be

performed by accredited veterinarians Federal code allows states to determine

who is eligible to perform sampling

7

CWD Diagnostics

No antemortem tests available Immunohistochemistry of obex and

medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes Obex is the best sample for clinical

animals MRPLNs are more critical in pre-

clinical diagnosis

FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM

Our job is to protect the livestock and public of Oklahoma and assist our livestock producers to be as successful as possible

13

FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM

Federal regulations were suspended in 2006

For the past 6 years ODAFF has set regulations based on the general guidance of the suspended Federal rules

14

FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM

We have tried to help our producers while maintaining standards that enable our producers to sell cervids to other states

New Federal rule went into effect 8/7/2012

15

FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM Federal oversight of the program will

be much more strict now Oklahoma will be in provisional status

for the first year of the review process If Oklahoma does not achieve and

maintain Consistent State Status our producers will not be able to sell deer to other states

16

FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM The expertise required to collect

Medial Retropharyngeal Lymph Nodes is greater than just collecting the brain stem

Any test eligible animals not sampled properly may require 2 animals to be sampled in the next year

We have required Accredited veterinarians to take these samples

17

FUTURE OF CWD PROGRAM Accredited veterinarians have special

training to represent ODAFF and USDA in regulatory programs

They have helped us eradicate brucellosis, hog cholera, foot and mouth disease, and others

If producers are legally approved to take samples they must be approved by ODAFF by demonstrating sampling competancy
