A Dream Come True!
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, & Joseph
December 30, 2012
From the Pastor December 30, 2012
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
In this ‘Year of Faith’
I’m explaining the
revised Roman Missal orations that were not
on a Sunday last year.
May our reflections on
these theologically rich, deep, beautiful
Mass orations, gleaned
from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts, help us grow in FAITH!
Feast of the Holy Family - Collect
O God, who were pleased to give us the shining example of the Holy Family,
graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life and in the
bonds of charity, and so, in the joy of your house, delight one day in eternal rewards.
Example & Divine Grace. While this Feast has been celebrated for centuries on various days in different countries, it was only added to the Church’s universal calendar in 1921, on the Sunday after Christmas. Its original orations, from the late 1800’s, focused on Jesus’ kingship over all, even His family. The current prayers, a post-Vatican II creation, highlight the Holy Family’s example of trust, understanding, patience and mutual love. The prayers also remind us that the love needed to make a family ‘work’ is God’s gift or a ‘grace’ for which we must pray. For let’s face it: family life ‘ain’t easy!’
Even the Holy Family had its share of traumas and testing, setbacks and challenges, worries and misunderstandings. They never could have faced and overcome these things without God’s grace, without deep trust in God’s promise to help, and without deep love for each other. Had negativity or doubt plagued their interfamily dealings, they would not be a ‘holy’ family! Nor could they have been joyful, charitable, loving and forgiving had they tried to make it on their own, without God’s help and grace. Is this not an important lesson every family, as well as friends, neighbors, parishes, coworkers, countries and so on need to learn … and practice? Is your family a ‘holy’ family?
Feast of the Holy Family – Prayer over the Offerings
We offer you, Lord, the sacrifice of conciliation, humbly asking that, through the intercession of
the Virgin Mother of God and Saint Joseph, you may establish our families firmly
in your grace and your peace.
Conciliation. This unusual word conveys the notion that all is perfectly aligned, perfectly pure, perfectly ‘perfect.’ We more commonly use its variation: ‘reconciliation’ when to say something has been restored to perfection. Since Jesus is absolute perfection, the Roman Missal uses ‘conciliation’ when it refers to all God accomplished through Christ’s Birth and Life, especially His Passion, Death and Resurrection, which reconciled us to God!
Standing on the sidelines, rooting us on in our spiritual quest to live by the reconciliation achieved for us by Jesus, are all the Angels and Saints, among whom two are given special mention today: “the Virgin Mother of God and Saint Joseph.” However, we must be clear about what it means that the Angels and Saints ‘intercede’ for us, for God cannot be compelled by their prayers or that He can only answer prayers through intermediaries. By invoking our ‘Heavenly Helpers’ - especially our greatest treasure, the Virgin Mother - we align ourselves with all who have survived the trials of earthly life and now enjoy eternal bliss in heaven.
Feast of the Holy Family – Prayer after Communion
Bring those you refresh with this heavenly Sacrament, most merciful Father, to imitate constantly the example of the Holy Family,
so that, after the trials of this world, we may share their company for ever.
Refreshed & Remake. Were our Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph able to deal with all their challenges because they were aware of who was in their midst, or did Jesus’ presence help them to face life’s realities? No doubt it was both: they thought and acted differently because of Christ’s presence among them, and Jesus helped them by His divine presence.
Are we aware of who is truly present in our midst in His Eucharistic Body and Blood? Do we realize the awesome grace that we can receive from Jesus, who comes to dwell in those who partake in the Most Blessed Sacrament? No wonder, as I often say in this series, the Church mandates us to participate in weekly Mass and receive Holy Communion daily if possible!
With God’s love and my prayers,
Reverend Michael J. Kreder

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH
First Reading: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14
Sirach emphasizes the importance of honoring one’s
parents. He explains that spiritual riches will come to those
who are kind to their mother and father.
Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-21
Paul advises us to treat each other with kindness and mercy
and to forgive as God forgives us. His words remind families
to always love and respect one another and let Christ’s
peace reign in their hearts and in their homes.
Gospel: Luke 2:41-52
When Jesus was twelve years old, the Holy Family traveled
to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. Jesus did not return
with the company. Instead, he stayed in Jerusalem, sitting
among the teachers while amazing them with his
understanding and questions. When found by his
concerned parents, Jesus reminded them that he must be
in the house of his Father. Returning together, Mary kept
these things in her heart.

FATIMA DEVOTIONS
Come join us on First Saturday’s of each month for our Lady of
Fatima Devotions which begin at 8:00 a.m. in Church. This is a
devotion of reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, done to
honor Our Lady's sorrows as suggested by Our Lord in an
apparition to Sister Lucia a visionary from Fatima in 1925 and as
requested by Our Lady. All are welcome.
STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
Each year, people throughout the world make New Year’s
resolutions. For many they are short lived and quickly forgotten.
At our Baptism and Confirmation, we make New Life
resolutions. Our Baptismal promises are lifelong commitments
to Jesus and the Church. We recognize that all that we possess
comes from God. We are God’s stewards - we have been
empowered to manage the abundant gifts that we have received.
As “good stewards” it is our responsibility to give back a portion
of the time, talent, and treasure we receive from our generous and
loving God. Let us recommit ourselves to the Lord by taking the
time to plan and make stewardship of time and talent part of our
lifestyle and stewardship of treasure part of our budget.
“Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided;
not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

PLEASE REMEMBER
YOUR PARISH IN YOUR WILLSaint Mary Church is most grateful to those who gift our parish
through their will and with memorialized gifts. Those wishing to
donate liturgical items [chalices, vestments, etc.] should contact
the Parish Office BEFORE purchasing anything. Often, we are
not able to use donated items because they do not match our sets,
are duplicates of what we already have. We will gladly suggest
what we need - and will definitely use.
LET’S REMEMBER OUR ADVERTISERS
It is through the generosity of these merchants that we are able to
place this bulletin into your hand each week and without cost to
the parish. Why not get into the habit of looking through the ads
and give these neighbors a chance to serve your needs.
