Today, I will research to history behind “Cinco de Mayo.”

My job is to compare the celebration in the US to the celebration in Mexico.

WHAT IS IT?

Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867).

CELEBRATIONS

Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States.

MEXICO

A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.

UNITED STATES

On May 5th, 1862, a few thousand Mexican soldiers put their lives on the line against the world’s largest and most powerful army in one legendary battle for freedom and for Mexico.

THE MOVIE

INSTRUMENT

Maracas ( pronunciation (help·info)), sometimes called rumba shakers and various other names, are percussion musical instruments—rattles—that originated in Latin America. They are classified as idiophoness. Players hold them by their handles, usually in pairs, and shake them. Traditional maracas con(cuia"koo-ya") or coconut shell filled with seeds or dried beans and mounted on a wooden handle. Modern maraca balls are also made of leather, wood, or plastic
