CIPI Newsletter – October 3rd, 2014
October 5 – 11, 2014 is designated as Fire Prevention Week. Therefore, the Beauval Fire
and Rescue Team have planned activities and will also be submitting ads on the local
CIPI scroll throughout the week in regards to Fire Prevention alerts.
Monday, October 6, 2014 – Fire Prevention Walk
This is open to the whole community so that we may show our support and appreciation
for all firefighters in Beauval and surrounding communities. Also in remembrance of
those who lost their lives while rescuing people from burning homes and other structures.
We will begin the walk at 11:00 a.m.
Tuesday, October 7, 2014 – 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. there will be an Open House at the Fire
Hall for the students attending school at Valley View. Any teacher that is interested must
schedule a time slot with Shirley Bell – Morin for that afternoon. Students will be given
some fire prevention awareness material.
Wednesday, October 8, 2014 – Fire Prevention ads will be placed on CIPI and
announced on the radio throughout the day.
Thursday, October 9, 2014 – Open House for the community beginning at 5:00 p.m. at
the Beauval Fire Hall. Various demonstrations will be shown to those in attendance and
we also encourage community members to use the Jaws of Life, try on Ice Rescue Gear,
and regular firefighting gear. We will also be demonstrating the effectiveness of Cold
Fire and fire extinguishers. We encourage community members to purchase a can of
Cold Fire as it is handy to have in all households, boats, vehicles, etc. We will also have
door prizes and free burgers. We encourage all community members to participate in this
event.
Friday to Sunday – Fire Prevention Week continues. We encourage parents/guardians
to educate their children on their home Fire Escape Plan, what number to call when there
is a fire, and also the dangers of fire. What does arson mean and so on? We can’t stress
enough the dangers of setting any type of fire whether it be a home, landfill (dump) or
other. People’s lives are at risk when setting any type of fire and this is a serious offence.

Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC)
is extending its $15 Senior Seat Sale until
October 31, 2014. Seniors aged 60 and over
will now get to ride with STC for $15 one-way
or $30 return plus tax for the entire month of
October.
“Saskatchewan’s population is very
geographically spread out,” Minister
responsible for STC Jennifer Campeau
said. “An extra month of the STC Senior Seat
Sale gives seniors the opportunity to travel to
even more Saskatchewan destinations and
reconnect with family and friends.”
The company also extended their May Senior
Seat Sale to include the month of June and saw
more than 17,000 senior riders take advantage
of the sale during the two months. The senior
seat sales have proven to be the most
successful campaigns for STC, outperforming
all other sales.
“Our Senior Seat Sales have turned
previously quiet months into some of our
highest ridership months throughout the
year,” STC President and CEO Shawn Grice
said. “The sales give seniors the chance to try
our services at a great price and to keep STC
top of mind for all of their future travel
needs.”
Find out more about the sale on STC’s
website at www.stcbus.com/seniorsale or on
STC’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/
STCbus. Seniors can purchase sale tickets
from any STC agency and must use their
tickets by October 31, 2014.

Managing Diabetes 10 Tips for Thanksgiving
The temptation to indulge can be overwhelming, but there are simple ways to make sure your Thanksgiving feast doesn’t interfere with your diet or heart health. Here are 10 tips for staying on track. 1) Don’t skip meals: Avoiding eating all day, then binging, can lead to blood sugar drops and spikes. The safe bet: Stick to your regular meal plan throughout the day, and eat in moderation. 2) Cut back on appetizers: Eat responsible portions of the special foods you only have once a year, like stuffing or turkey. Try to avoid overindulging in fatty, high-carb appetizers that fill you before your main course even arrives. 3) Limit alcohol: The wine may be flowing, but drinking too much can lead to blood sugar drops and weight gain. Always try to stick to the Canadian Diabetes Association alcohol guidelines (10 drinks a week for women, and 12 to 15 for men), and remember that one standard drink is 10 g alcohol, 341 ml of 5 per cent alcohol beer, 43 ml of 40 per cent alcohol spirits, and 142 ml of 12 per cent alcohol wine. If you haven’t already, speak with your health-care team to find out if drinking is safe for you. 4) Choose white meat: White meat is leaner and less fatty than dark meat. Really, is the slight difference in taste worth the extra calories? 5) Make fat-free gravy: If you have to have a drizzle of gravy, make the gravy ahead of
time, let it cool and skim the congealed fat off the top first. Alternatively, use a gravy measuring cup that will skim the fat off for you. 6) Skip the dinner rolls: Dinner rolls can lead to waistline rolls. Stuffing can be equally less healthy, so if it’s the special food you only indulge in once a year, ensure it’s a moderate portion and count it as your carb. 7) Load up on veggies: Mashed white potatoes may make your mouth water, but equally tasty veggies like Brussels sprouts and broccoli are low carb, low fat and won’t affect your blood sugar. 8) Slow down: A tasty Thanksgiving spread can trick you into eating quickly, but don’t forget that Thanksgiving is also great time to talk with friends and family, and allow your body time to digest. Since your stomach takes roughly 20 minutes to tell your brain it’s full, the slower you eat the better. Strike up a conversation, put the fork down between bites, and always stop eating when you’re feeling full. 9) Go for an after meal walk: Curb the urge to continue eating by walking around the block with a friend or family member. You’ll burn off some of the excess calories and feel better for it. 10) Be positive: As with other holidays associated with food, there is no getting around the fact that people with diabetes have to approach things differently. But focusing on a few of the special foods you love most, and choosing moderate portions can help ensure you have a great meal.
