O Auto do Círio é um espétaculo de rua grandioso, com ampla participação popular. Acontece na noite

da sexta-feira que antecede a procissão principal do Círio.

Auto do Círio is a great street spectacle with wide popular participation. It happens on the night of

Friday that precedes the main procession of the Círio.

Este espetáculo manifesta a relação entre sagrado e profano presente durante todo o seu desenvolvimento, ou

seja, começa como uma grande procissão que, posteriormente, se transforma numa festa de carnaval.

This spectacle manifests the relationship between sacred and profane present throughout its development, it

begins as a big procession that later becomes a carnival feast.

Na noite que antecede a procissão principal do Círio, sai do Colégio Gentil Bittencourt, em direção à Catedral,

a procissão que recebe o nome de transladação.

On the night before the main procession of the Círio, it leaves the Colégio Gentil Bittencourt, towards the

Cathedral, the procession that receives the name of transladação (translation).

Fazendo o trajeto do Círio no sentido contrário, milhares de pessoas seguem em procissão, a maioria com

velas acesas e muitas cumprindo promessas.

Taking the path of the Círio in the opposite direction, thousands of people follow in procession, most with

candles burning and many fulfilling promises.

Após a transladação muitos fiéis aguardam pela madrugada em frente da Catedral, onde acorrerá

a missa que dá inicio à procissão do Círio.

After the transladação, many faithful people wait until dawn in front of the Cathedral, where the

mass that begins the procession of Círio will take place.

Os romeiros pernoitam em frente ao mercado de peixe do Ver-o-Peso, local onde a corda é

estendida já na madrugada do dia do Círio.

Pilgrims sleep in front of the Ver-o-Peso fish market, where the corda (rope) is extended in the

early hours of the day of the Círio.

A corda simboliza a ligação dos promesseiros com Nossa Senhora de Nazaré. É um espaço de fé, de pagamento de

promessas, de devoção, de dor exacerbada, mas também de união dos corpos e dos espírito.

The rope (corda) symbolizes the connection of the promesseiros (those who escort the said procession) with Nossa

Senhora de Nazaré. It is a space of faith, for payment of promises, devotion, exacerbated pain, but also of union

between bodies and spirit.

O Círio não se trata apenas de fé e devoção, episódios violentos acontecem. Aqui, um homem

esfaqueado agoniza no chão enquanto espera socorro.

The Círio is not only about faith and devotion, violent episodes happen. Here, a stabbed man

dies on the floor while waits for help.

Foi necessário assender um fogo para chamar a atenção e conseguir uma ambulância para socorrer

aquele homem.

It was necessary to light a fire in order to get attention and an ambulance to rescue that man.

O homem foi levado dali, os bombeiros apagaram o fogo e lavaram o sangue no chão. É Círio outra vez!

The man was taken away, the firemen put out the fire and washed the blood on the floor. It’s Círio again!

Os barcos na doca do Ver-o-Peso são enfeitados com fitas coloridas e bandeiras da Nossa Senhora de Nazaré.

The boats on the Ver-o-Peso dock are adorned with colorful ribbons and flags of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré.

O círio é uma festa polissémica, fruto do encontro entre diferentes tradições e experiências multiplas de romaria.

Círio is a polysemic party, fruit of the encounter between different traditions and multiple pilgrimage experiences.

Quando a berlinda é liberada, os devotos dão um espetáculo muito próprio: visivelmente emocionados, com os

olhos cheios de lágrimas, ajoelham-se, levantam os braços e rezam.

When the berlinda ( a flower-bedecked carriage that carries the image of the saint) is released, the devotees give

a very own spectacle: visibly excited, with eyes full of tears, kneel, raise their arms and pray.

Os Guardas de Nazaré tem a função de garantir a proteção da berlinda até ao atrelamento da corda.

The Nazaré Guards have the function to guarantee the protection of the berlinda until its connection with the

rope (corda).

A procissão principal do Círio corresponde ao traslado da imagem de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré da Catedral da

Sé, no bairro da Cidade Velha, até à praça Santuário, no bairro de Nazaré.

The main procession of the Círio corresponds to the transfer of the image of the Nossa Senhora from the

Cathedral, in the neighborhood of Cidade Velha, to Santuário Square, in the neighborhood of Nazaré.

A berlinda passando o Ver-o-Peso imediatamente antes do momento do atrelamento da corda.

The berlinda passing the Ver-o-Peso immediately before the moment when the rope is attached.

Promesseiros carregando ex-votos.

Vários elementos são utilizados para demonstrar reconhecimento pelas graças alcançadas.

Several elements are used to demonstrate recognition for the graces achieved.

Os “anjinhos” geralmente pagam promessas feitas pelos pais.

The "angels" usually pay promises made by their parents.

A procissão do Círio conta com a participação de cerca de 2 milhões de pessoas num só dia.

The procession of Círio counts with the participation of about 2 million people in a single day.

Não se pode negar que a força da manifestação está na participação popular.

It can not be denied that the force of the manifestation lies in popular participation.

São os devotos, os romeiros e os promesseiros os grandes responsáveis pela continuidade da tradição

nesses 211 anos.

Are the devotees, the pilgrims and the promesseiros who are responsible for the continuity of the

tradition in these 211 years.

De uma forma ou de outra, quase toda a cidade participa da procissão.

In a way or another, almost the entire city participates in the procession

O Círio envolve, direta ou indiretamente, toda a população paraense, estendendo ainda sua influência para

além dos limites do estado do Pará.

The Círio involves, directly or indirectly, the entire population of Pará, extending its influence beyond the

limits of the state of Pará.

É mais do que um mero fenômeno religioso, podendo ser observado e compreendido sob diversos pontos de

vista: religioso, estético, turístico, cultural, sociológico, antropológico etc.

It is more than a mere religious phenomenon, and can be observed and understood from different points of

view: religious, aesthetic, tourism, cultural, sociological, anthropological, etc.

O Círio também desperta e reforça o valor da solidariedade entre as pessoas que dele participam.

The Círio also awakens and reinforces the value of solidarity among the people who participate

in it.

Enquanto muitos devotos distribuem água ao longo da procissão, outros auxiliam os que desmaiam de

emoção ou que são sufocados pelo calor.

While many devotees distribute water throughout the procession, others assist those who faint with emotion

or are suffocated by heat.

A trajetória de cada devoto é, ao mesmo tempo, única e coletiva, uma vez que expressa o conjunto dos

problemas e das aflições comuns à coletividade dos paraenses e mesmo dos brasileiros.

The trajectory of each devotee is, at the same time, unique and collective, since it expresses the whole

problems and common afflictions of the collective of Paraenses and even Brazilians.

Devotos ajudam os que fizeram a promessa de cumprir uma parte do trajeto de joelhos,

segurando-os pelos braços.

Devotees help those who have made the promise to fulfill a part of the journey on their

knees, holding them by the arms.

Aqui, um devoto auxilia limpando o caminho.

Here, a devotee helps by clearing the way.

Diante da profunda desigualdade social que marca o país, muitos buscam auxílio na fé.

Given the deep social inequality that marks the country, many seek help in faith.

A religiosidade que caracteriza o Círio de Nazaré é marcada pela experiência da angústia, da dor, mas também da

esperança, da fé no poder supra-humano da Virgem de Nazaré.

The religiosity that characterizes the Círio de Nazaré is marked by the experience of anguish, pain, but also of

hope, of faith in the superhuman power of the Virgin of Nazareth.

No domingo de Círio, a cidade de Belém transfigura-se.

On the Sunday of Círio, the city of Belém is transfigured.
