HISTORY

1800S - British searched for a way to transport from the           

            island (penang) to the mainland (Seberang Perai). 

1882  - weld quay was reclaim the seafront shore to                   

            construct jetty for trading purposes.

         - later on it is spread the traffic load to the expanding   

           jetty to the north side of the area. what we know to       

           now as clan jetty.

late - chinese hokkien immigrant that shared a common

1800s  surname  BEGAN TO BUILD JETTY FOR EACH OF THEIR CLAN.

1900S - THE JETTY SETTLEMENTS EXPANDED AT THE PEAK OF               

           IMMIGRATIONS. THE ARE DESCENDANTS FROM COASTAL             

           VILLAGE OF SOUTHERN FUJIAN PROVINCE IN CHINA.

          - THEY INTENDED TO ONLY STAY THERE TILL THE HAVE SAVINGS 

            TO GO BACK TO CHINA BUT ENDED UP STAYING BECAUSE OF       

            WORLD WAR AND THE OVERLOAD WORK AT PORT.

          - SOON AFTER THEY MADE THE JETTIES INTO SETTLEMENTS         

            WHICH INCREASE THE NUMBER OF IMMIGRANTS COMING THERE.

1930/ - the clan jetties constantly being treated by the 

1941     british to demolish the jetties because they saw it as

            a living slum but they stay united and reconstruct any

            jetty that got demolish.

1969  - in 1969 penang lost its free port status and came down  

          into an economy decline in the state. 

1990s - UN BRANDED GEORGETOWN TO A TOURIST HAVEN. THE AREA     

            CHANGE FROM A GAMBLING SLUM AND TURN INTO A TOURIST     

            ATTRACTION.

        

2008  - THE CLAN JETTIES WERE AWARDED UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE 

            STATUS BUT THEY HAVE TO SACRIFICE THEIR PRIVACY BECAUSE

            OF THE OVER FLOODING OF TOURIST COMING TO THE JETTY. THE 

            HERITAGE STATUS BECAME A "DOUBLE EDGE-SWORD" TO THE   

            COMMUNITY.

RELIGION : TAOISM - A TEMPLE IN THE ENTRANCE (TO BRING FORTUNE)

                 AT THE END OF THE JETTY (TO PROTECT THE FISHERMAN) 

WORK : FISHERMAN, DOCKERS TILL 1900S BUT LATER AFTER THE           

            PENANG LOST IT FREE PORT STATUS THERE. THEY WORK AS       

            FACTORY WORKERS, SELL SOUVENIRS AND RESTAURANT           

            OWNERS.

The pedestrians access the jetties by the weld quay (main road) which connects to the small

paths that are used as walkways through the jettys.
