A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends:
2014 was an adventurous year at the Philadelphia Outward Bound School.
You may have met one of the 4,100 students who participated in one of our experiential education programs this past year. You may have spoken with one of our instructors who collectively delivered 9,191 student program days in 2014. Or, you may have seen us in the news during our annual Building Adventure event in mid-October where over 120 people rappelled 31 stories (418 feet) from the top of One Logan Square in Center City. The Philadelphia Outward Bound School is the “school” that inspires leadership and service to communities through single and multi-day outdoor experiences that change lives through challenge and discovery.
In truth, the Philadelphia Outward Bound School is not a traditional educational institution. We educate by “doing,” and our students find us through our many partnerships with schools and youth-serving organizations across the greater Philadelphia metropolitan region. Together, with these educational partners, we inspire more than 4,000 youth to be more than they thought they could be - and to graduate from high school, to finish college and to return home to make their world a better place. At the same time, we introduce these amazing young people to the wonder of natural places – rivers, valleys, winding trails, waterfalls, streams, night skies, snakes and bugs – we can’t forget the bugs!
We are a school for adults, too. We provided life-changing experiences for OEF/OIF veterans and corporate management teams. In September, we delivered the sixth consecutive teambuilding program for Leadership Philadelphia – more than 100 of Philadelphia’s future leaders representing corporate, civic and non-profit leadership!
Outward Bound students will tell you that we change their lives. For the students in Philadelphia’s public and charter schools who receive scholarship support to participate in single and multi-day courses, a changed life is a priceless investment.
At the Philadelphia Outward Bound School, we serve students of all ages and walks of life. We take pride in giving our students the chance to see and believe in their newly discovered capabilities and to envision a future well beyond what they ever dreamed possible.
As we reflect on 2014, we celebrate the support and leadership from our Board of Trustees, our friends, our donors and supporters, our students and parents, our teachers and youth leaders, our corporate partners, our community and region – and, we want to thank you – for joining us on the pathways of challenge and discovery.
Peace, love and chow!

“Kurt Hahn once said, ‘Education must enable young people to effect what they have recognized to be right, despite hardships, despite dangers, despite inner skepticism, despite boredom, and despite mockery from the world.’
The maxims of Kurt Hahn have one thousand applications and the hundreds of men and women who devote their lives to teaching each of us how to fall, one at a time, are my personal heroes. Outward Bound has made me who I am today because I am not afraid... I am not afraid of what the future holds. I am not afraid to fall.”
Siduri Beckham POBS Alum & Student at Masterman High School
“Most students who have gone on expeditions have demonstrated remarkable improvement in grades, behavior, and leadership. In fact, many teachers have said to me ‘I can tell he/she is one of yours,’ meaning the student has participated in POBS.
POBS has helped EVERY single youngster we have sent them regardless of age, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, and disability. This organization is instrumental in helping Philadelphia and the surrounding communities develop the leaders of tomorrow.
Our students would not have this wonderful opportunity without the Outward Bound partnership and the financial help they provide.”
